Rumors from others: Nikon, Canon, Sony and Samsung…
A quick recap of rumors about mirrorless cameras from competitors:
1) NIKON
According to Bloomberg Nikon Corp. plans to introduce a new type of single-lens reflex camera as early as this fiscal year, President Makoto Kimura said.
The “new concept” model will probably have an enhanced function for video recording and may adopt the so-called mirrorless structure, Kimura said in an interview today in Tokyo. “It could be any time this fiscal year or the following year, as new models are starting to sell,” he said, declining to specify when the product will be available.
2) CANON
According to Photorumors “At the beginning of next week Canon will make new product announcement(s) in the printer, camera and camcorder categories. I have no further details at that point.“. There was some speculation here and there about a mirrorless camera annoucnement. I don’t believe it will come yet but let’s see…
3) SONY
Kipon will release a huge ammount of different adapters for the NEX system: http://sonyalpharumors.com/kipon-to-release-a-huge-ammount-of-different-adapters-for-the-nex-system/
4) SAMSUNG

2 years ago |Given their video camera business Canon, Panasonic, and Sony have a vested interested in crippling video in their DSLRs. Nikon should have no such hesitations. I’m interested to see what they offer in terms of video. It’ll probably be disappointing, but perhaps not.

2 years ago |Nikon is new to video, so I’m not sure how well it can compete with Canon, Panasonic and Sony. I guess we’ll see.
According to different rumors, they will announce their mirrorless cameras before Photokina (late August?). It will be smaller than current competition ones because it will have a smaller sensor (17mm diagonal, 2.5 crop factor). In order to compete in low light performance and control over DOF, it will come with pretty fast primes:
- 18mm f/1.4 (equiv. to 45mm in FOV and f/3.5 in DOF on a FF camera)
- 32 mm f/1.2 (equiv. to 80mm in FOV and f/3.0 in DOF on a FF camera)
And with kit zooms starting at f/2.8.
The question is: can Nikon make these lenses perform wide open as good as a FF lens would perform at f/3.0 or f/3.5? When it comes to vigneting sure they can, but a sharp lens at f/1.2 is possible? Because once you stop down to f/2 or more you won’t have a very shallow DOF or be able to shoot at low ISO in dark light.
I eagerly await Canon to announce their mirrorless cameras early next year. Those are probably going to be really good ones.

2 years ago |August and September are going to define photography in the years to come. With the steady decline of small sensor P&S ( because of better and better mobile phone cameras ) large sensor cameras ( primarily mirrorless ) will become more important to manufacturers.
So we can now expect new mirrorless line from Nikon, GH2 and two large sensor compacts from Panasonic ( maybe a GF2 also ?), modular concept, E-3 and maybe a new m4/3 from Olympus, NEX-7 and pellix ILCs from Sony and NX100 from Samsung.
The questions that remain are what Canon’s response will be and how will Fuji and Pentax react.
Can’t wait to see the outcome

2 years ago |hey, i got an idea! why not someone make a mirrorless camera but replace the mirror with a sensor, so the sensor flips up all the time and you look through the lens DIRECTLY and when you make the exposure, the sensor flips down, there will be a few focusing lenses in front of your eye (just like a viewfinder)
