2 years ago |$800 is a little better but still, another very high priced lens (45mm macro, 7-14mm and 14-140mm). what kind of customers are panasonic targeting with m4/3, again? surely no one who is trying to make a living with photography, so enthusiasts who will pay a premium for the smaller size of the equipment? those who would shop at Sharper Image?

2 years ago |Thanks, I’m looking at dpreview sample with E-PL1 and the sharpness is extraordinary.

2 years ago |I’ve got two Lumix lenses — the 45-200 and the 20mm 1.7. I’ve got the Oly Kit and then legacy glass. I MIGHT go for the Oly 9-18, but I’d prefer something wider. The other option might be the Samyang.
At these prices, I might not own another Lumix lens for a while.

2 years ago |Admin,
Thank you so much for your work on this site… Now my rant! $800!?!?! Are they out of their minds? I now have an official request for you. The next time you are able to talk to Panasonic and Olympus about m43 system ask them these two questions:
1. Who is your target consumer? Like Andrew above said, not many pros use m43, mostly hobby and enthusiasts, how can we afford lenses like the 7-14mm, 8mm, 45macro? Are we only to use and buy the 14-45 and 45-200 and be happy? Are they not pricing themselves out of the market and giving the market over to Sony and Samsung?
2. Since the lenses are sooo expensive, will they come out with a m43 teleconverter and marco tube? I don’t want to use a 43 teleconverter, but a m43 teleconverter! Atleast then, I can double the use of my current lenses!
Sorry for rant. I really like my m43 system, but if I knew that they were going to keep gouging us for every penny, I would have went canon or nikon. I’m starting to doubt that the extreme price gap is worth the smaller mirrorless format?

2 years ago |This is ridiculously overpriced for a lens that is basically for fun messing around shooting and not really serious stuff. Fisheyes are a valuable tool but this is insane. Canon and Nikon both sell faster fisheyes for cheaper.

2 years ago |prices are fine, stop moaning…Olympus, Leica and Panasonic glass is better value than Canon and Nikon

2 years ago |None of Panasonic, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Canon or Nikon produces specialty lenses at bargain price. Not even Leica.. Its a fisheye eveyone. Welcome back on earth! for the rest, there is the questionable Samyang. Not convinced? Check out the Sigmas…
Now, Nikon or Canon only has that many entry level lenses in their catalog. A rather limited sub-set. Granted, Panasonic could push the envelope a bit more, but there is only that much comparison that can be done. Once you got two kit zooms and the el-cheapo 50mm, the price starts to climb faster than you’d like. Again, welcome back on earth everyone.
Oh… talking of Canikon’s kit zooms : how well are they rated by the way…?
Finally, no, the Panasonic’s fisheye is not insanely priced compared to that of Nikon or Canon. And given the extreme wide angle, half a stop slower is purely academical.
Jeez…

2 years ago |umm.. YouDidntDidYou.. well, all I can say about your comment is that, either you work for Panasonic or your filthy rich!
1. I’ll leave Leica out of this debate. Leica to me is a ‘name’ that associates high prices. Nostalgia, status, etc… It’s like people that drive Ferrari’s and wear Rolexs.. They do their jobs great but at a high cost. And people that can afford them will buy them also for status reasons. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you want Leica and can afford it, go ahead. But it does not effect me if a Leica lens is $8000 because I know it’s NOT “marketed” towards me. That’s also why I bought a ZS7 and not a V-Lux 20 (Same camera!) Also this 8mm lens is a Lumix, not a Leica!
2. No it’s not a “better” value than Canon or Nikon. Did you honestly really mean to type that, or was that just a slip? I’m beginning to be embarrassed around my friends that own Canon and Nikon if we start talking about lens quality/value/price. Both Canon and Nikon have cheaper and faster glass compared to Panasonic.
Here’s the thing. Canon and Nikon APS-C have been established for a long time. So there is PLENTY of used glass out there for resale and trade which makes it of really good value! Even some, if not most of their glass that sells new, is of better value than Panasonic. Now here is Panasonic, still only about what? 3 years into m43, smaller market share, smaller offering and they are releasing these expensive lenses? The resale market is small.
I think right now, the ONLY value in m43 is Olympus. I guess they did the same mistake early, but at least they learned from it. The E-P1 and E-P2 were a little too expensive, the E-PL1 is a perfect camera to gain market space and followers. Panasonic is starting to also get it right with the G2, which is still about $50-100 too much, but it’s getting better. (I say this for newcomers, not for people upgrading from G1)
m43 needs to establish itself in the market and price accordingly.
YouDidntDidYou – I would agree with you 100% if m43 was a “professional” choice. But it’s not. It’s a hobbyist and enthusiasts choice. Which means less people affording m43 products, which means less reason to make different lenses… its a bad circle.
I’ll tell you what YouDidntDidYou… I’ll stop moaning about being raped over a barrel in regards to m43 “lens” prices when you show me a “professional” wedding photographer using only m43! Do we have a deal? Because then I will completely admit that Panasonic lens are of better “value” than Canon and Nikon.
P.S. Just want to clarify, that when I say Canon and Nikon glass, I mean ALL glass manufacturers that make products for the two brands, not just Canon and Nikon. Those two brands have the most 3rd party lens out of anyone, which directly plays into the lens price wars.. Damn it.. when is sigma going to jump into m43..
P.P.S I just realized this as I was finishing… YouDidntDidYou, you are from England. I don’t know the European price market for m43, you might be right (by which I mean Canon and Nikon are over priced in Europe and then m43 is of reasonable value, maybe?) I’m North American and m43 is priced more than Canon and Nikon, so our perspective on value is different.

2 years ago |This lens has unusually sharp corners for a fisheye, but a 7-14mm for an extra 200$ is a no brainer.
I’ve got a feeling…
…this one won’t even make it to the shelves.

2 years ago |i’ll be buying one of these as soon as it’s available. it’s a speciality lens, and will be my main lens for underwater photo/video to get those great shots of sharks, mantas and whales onto a m4/3 format. Considering it’s size, the price is not high at all, it means my underwater rig is a fraction of the size of my 5d rig and much lighter so i don’t incur the high prices charged by aeroplane companies for transporting underwater camera gear.
i hope that panasonic continue to produce more high quality speciality lenses like this for the m43′s, be they at a higher price, rather than just the standard stuff that’s cheap, as in the long run, speciality people will lose interest in the format and stay with their bigger frame canons nikons etc. Then it will just become another run of the mill consumer product, with no distinction to anything other brand’s line.

2 years ago |To be honest though, I find the price liberating. It’s like “sweet, i can stop wanting it cause i aint gonna get it.” If you just want the fisheye, mostly for fun/video, the samyang is lookin pretty sweet. But I really hope the 14mm f/2.5 won’t be anymore expensive than the 20mm. sigh, i truly hope that portrait and fast, constant aperture zooms are next. I mean, what else is there besides being somewhat redundant?
and everything fta said.

nope not filthy rich or work for Panasonic, but did invest in the Panasonic L10 nearly 3 years ago which got great reviews went it came out except for value (apparenly the Leica lens it came with was over priced but got excellent reviews especially when compared to the kit zooms you usually get with Nikon and Canon).
1. the reason I included Leica in the debate is because the Leica 25mm f1.4 is thought ti be expensive (I paid £750) but as you can read on dpreview.com “it’s regarded by photographers as best in it’s class. I know this 8mm is a Lumix but I was making a general point, compare it in price to the Olympus 8mm (which I own) which is priced at a very similar £699 – £729.
2. the meaning of value is not whether it’s cheaper or faster otherwise I would of used those words, Olympus glass tends to be a little more expensive than Canikon but gets better reviews for sharpness and build, again ALLPansonic Glass gets excellent reviews except for price just like the highly regarded GH1 (which I own), what you actually get is alot of bang for your hard earned bucks…
3. I don’t buy glass or cameras with the resale market in mind, I buy them because I need them and to use them as much as possible, but what I can gather from ebay, flickr and various four thirds sites people don’t have a problem re-selling their lenses or cameras…
4 I’ve never heard a GH1 owner say their camera wasn’t good value actually quite the opposite…
5. Looking at sales figures m43 is doing quite a good job in establishing it self although Pansonic could do a better job at marketing but I’m sure this will happen, Olympus is excelling in this department.
6. There are a lot of professional videographers using the GH1 for their jobs all the time and I think you’ll find that if you have a look on the micro four thirds forums on dpreview they are a lot of professional Canon and Nikon users purchasing micro four thirds cameras whereas before before they might have purchased the Canon G11 Recommended price when it came out:• $499• €589• £569
**** here’s the deal I am a professional wedding photographer who does exclusively use micro four thirds (GH1) at weddings***
but also use my Panasonic L10′s too
micro four thirds in Europe is at a little premium here but you gets what you pay for pound for pound…
I actually don’t have a reason to purchase the Lumix 8mm because I own the Olympus 8mm and micro four thirds adaptor so I can use across all my four thirds cameras
