(FT5) Another exceptional µ4/3 lens from Panasonic is soon to be unveiled!
Few days ago we told you that at Photokina (September) Panasonic will finally release the 14mm f/2.5, 100-300mm and 1-2 new video lenses for the new MFT camcorder (The AG-AF100). Today two of our best sources told us that we should expect one more “exceptional” lens. A lens that was not one the Panasonic roadmap -> yes Panasonic cheated on us ![]()
The sources didn’t reveal any details about the lens. But they said we don’t have to wait a long time to know it…
Just a reminder. Few weeks ago we received rumors from good sources saying that Panasonic was working on fast primes (faster than f/1.4). We don’t know if one of those fast primes could be announced now. There has been also a rumor saying that there could be a MicroFourThrids version of the current Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 FourThirds lens.
Let’s see…

2 years ago |The panasonic wide angle prime is now a 12mm 2.8, not a 14mm 2.5?
50-60mm 1.2 would be cracking!

2 years ago |ops! Corrected. Olympus will make a 12mm f/2.8

2 years ago |I guess I’m a little confused about why there would be a need for a 25mm fast (1.4) prime when there is already a great 20mm fast (1.7) prime. This just doesn’t add up yet. I am excited to see what they come out with.

2 years ago |I have a feeling it will slot somewhere painfully in between my 20/1.7 and 50/1.1
Hurry up and end my misery Panasonic!

2 years ago |I hope it’s NOT a 25/1.4. They’ve already got the excellent-performing 20/1.7; 25 is close to 20 and f/1.4 is close to f/1.7, so it wouldn’t really expand their lineup that much.
On the other hand… 50/1.4, 60/1.2, 70/1-point-something… NOW you’re talking!

2 years ago |The 20mm is a fine lens, and I can make due with it, but I’d forget about it real quick if they made a smallish (doesn’t have to be a true pancake), 25mm f/1.4. I simply prefer the classic 50mm field of view over 40mm. But yeah, a portrait lens is needed. Although I must say for me I’m happy manually focusing any one of the old 50mm f/1.4′s (I own a SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.4) as a portrait lens. When I do portraits the subjects rarely move, so manual focus is fine…and old 50mm’s are only $100.

2 years ago |I second this.
There is a lot more room to be covered by a fast 40~50mm F1.4(-) than with a 25mm F1.4 which real benefit to the 20mm pancake would be around 2.7x thinner DOF.

2 years ago |Agreed! The 20/1.7 will not be well replaced by a 25/anything. Need a 50mm fast prime. 1.2 would be outstanding.

2 years ago |We already know
, it’s 12-75mm F2.5-3.3 HD OIS. Although, I’m hoping for 14mm F1.1, but will never get it in m4/3, I suppose.

2 years ago |I think 30/1.2 is real for Panasonic, so have 20/1.7 and 45/2.8.

2 years ago |I think a fast mid-FL lens would be great. Something like a 35 or a 40. Perhaps even a short telephoto in the 60-70 range would be good as well.

2 years ago |25/1.4 is a bit redundant with 20/1.7
4/3 never had portrait prime, I hope for one even if it’s m4/3.

2 years ago |considering AG-AF100, the only real thing they could do is a new cine line of lenses, similar to the recent leica master primes.

together with lossless compression that would be an instant hit. red one would simply cease to exist the next day.

2 years ago |Personally, if Olympus delivers a 12mm F2.8 – I will buy that over the Panny 14mm F2.5. There are so many 14mm choices out there and the difference between 2.8 and 2.5 is insignificant in my books.
As for the *exceptional* lens – I have a bad feeling it will be some sort of 3D novelty act….yawn.
In a perfect world it would be something like the mythical 12-75 F-whatever, but I’m not holding my breath.

2 years ago |Hmm, maybe they have a video lens with built-in zoom motor?

2 years ago |And what about 10 or 11mm???
Thanks to the 8mm you can get hideous results, or with the 14mm obtaining “old-school” results.
There’s a lot of fast 25 and 50mm C-mount lenses on the market, but the wides don’t cover the M4/3 sensor : What a pity!
Unfortunately, I see in your answers that nobody seems interested at wide lenses… and maybe it’s the same for pana marketing roadmap!
Miroslav
2 years ago |I’m interested – the wider the better, but unfortunately many cameras and lenses distort the subjects close to the edges way too much for my liking. 28mm ( in 35mm terms ) is a sweet spot for me. That’s why I asked for 14 mm F1.1.
I regard some kind of stitching ( whether in camera or by software ) a better way to shoot ultra wide.
BTW, try to find a wide converter for the lens, opinions vary, but there are some satisfied people. Sony has done a good thing by releasing a wide converter for their NEX pancake, I’d like to see something like that for m4/3 primes.

I am also interested in an 10-11mm prime – but not holding my breath with a 14mm prime from Panasonic and a 12mm from Olympus allegedly on the way. I will need to settle for the 12, I suppose.

2 years ago |I’m guessing the reason for the new lens not being on the roadmap is to protect the sales of the Panasonic Leica 45mm f/2.8 macro.
If a new pro spec standard zoom is announced, let’s say a 14-50mm f/2.8, then the interest in the 45mm f/2.8 is probably less.
