(FT5) No new Panasonic GF camera at Photokina

Bad news folks! There will be no new GF camera from Panasonic at Photokina. Three sources contacted me and said the new Panasonic GF2 will be announced in February 2011 only. All three told me the Panasonic GF2 is expected to be a very compact model like the Sony NEX-5 but with much better ergonomy and usability.
To compete against the Sony NEX and the future Samsung NX100 cameras Panasonic will lower the price of the current Panasonic GF1 kits.
More Panasonic rumors will follow during the next days. We expect Panaosnic to announce the new products on September 21. Olympus will announce the E-5 on September 14.

2 years ago |If only Panasonic had in body image stabilization and I would consider the GF1. I’m holding my breath for the E-5 though.

2 years ago |Not too bad for me as having GF1 already but overall this is quite disappointing. So what will be The Big Thing (if any)?
Alberto
2 years ago |very bad policy by Panasonic,
they need new products to compete, the public will see GF1 as obsolete againts new offer from Sony/Samsung
we need more news about GH2, admin, especially about new sensor inside
Th
2 years ago |I agree about GH2. The reason for the sensor delay was supposed to be revealed last week. Hopefully, as Admin says, we will know more in the next few days.

chris
2 years ago |does this mean there’s no new pen also?
Jesper
2 years ago |If only the big news is GH2, but that alone wouldn’t make it. New lenses!
John
2 years ago |Would welcome the price drop. Only thing is, the current GF1 sold cannot be hacked anymore. I thought this was done in anticipation of the new GF2. I would like to have GF1, but with possibility to hack.
James
2 years ago |Noooooooo, please let this not be true. I’ve been holding off buying a GF1 for about three months now as I thought a new version would be announced at Photokina!!
John
2 years ago |I’ve been holding off as well. So now, I cannot buy a GF2 until January. And the current GF1 is being intentionally crippled by Panasonic. I cannot help but think they’re shooting themselves in the foot.

2 years ago |The GF1 was only 1 year old so I wouldn’t expect it to be replaced so soon. The GH2 is long over due for an over haul. I think the GH2 will be the camera that everyone wants not because of the body but because of the new wide aperture lens.
Eric
2 years ago |I still say they need to change the body on the GH2. The GH1 is a fairly serious camera, but it looks like something you’d find in my moms purse. Plus, the G2 looks identical to the GH1. It’s odd to have two cameras in totally different price brackets with the same body. If they are going to reduce the GF1 size down then that opens the door to make the GH2 look more like the old Panasonic LC1.

2 years ago |Panasonic have really messed up with their product time lines here. By Feb Sony will have brought out their NEX 7 with better controls for inter/expert photographers and the A55 seems to have the gh area covered. Was waiting for the GF2 to come out to decide which camp to go with, think it will def in Sony now.
Th
2 years ago |“A55 seems to have the gh area covered”
Get real! Read up on things before stating your ignorance.
No 60p, AF working only with aperture wide open, rolling shutter, no manual controls during video, when IBIS on maximum clip length of 9min due to overheating, focus motor noise…
Eric
2 years ago |You know, some people take photos with cameras first, and video second. For those people (which I’m a part of) the A55 is the far better choice.
Th
2 years ago |Those people shouldn’t claim that “A55 seems to have the gh area covered” because the “GH-area” clearly includes the video performance.
Miroslav
2 years ago |Have you compared A55 .jpeg sharpness to E-PL1 at same ISO values?
Have you compared m4/3 and Sony lens reviews?
Is there anything you can put on A55 that can rival Panasonic 20 mm F1.7 both in image quality sub F2 and in size?
You’ll get similar results if you compare any of m4/3 of 4/3 supezooms to Sony’s.
A55 is a great concept, but Sony has a lot of work to do on it. Fast AF and fps aren’t everything and as Sony takes time to cure the drawbacks, m4/3 is going to catch up.

2 years ago |Awesome new for me! I *just* ordered the LX5 and was debating whether I should wait for GF2.
This makes sense, Panasonic usually refreshes their niche, successful products like the GF1 every 2 years (i.e. LX3 and a few others I can’t remember at the moment).
Brian
2 years ago |Such a shame. Maybe I ill look into the lx5.

2 years ago |You’d rather buy a camera with a smaller sensor for $500?!
Clark
2 years ago |That sux they’re disabling the hack for new gf cams. In any case I’d rather see more lenses plus the new gh2 anyway….
Greg
2 years ago |The GF1 is just fine guys
It’s lenses and high end cameras (GH2) we’re waiting from Panasonic…
Let them take the Apple route: rare, but significant upgrades…
Miroslav
2 years ago |A pity, they should renew their products every 12 months. On the other hand, a hacked GF1 lacks very few things, so the update would not be substantial ( enough ). Hopefully, people will find a way to hack newer GF1s and GH1s.
This also means that GF2 will have the new sensor that will be presented with GH2.
Let’s hope they release some quality lenses in the meantime.
Milt
2 years ago |I am disappointed that the more compact GF camera (with built in EVF?) will not appear soon. Like others, have been waiting to see what it looks like and costs. Will be interested in seeing where Panasonic and its sellers think the floor of GF1 prices should be in the meantime.

2 years ago |The problem is that Panasonic doesn’t have much competition at the moment. They could add in body stabilisation, but they’ll never do that as it doesn’t work that well with video (easily gets too hot).
As for the rest, only the NEX-3/5 is smaller, but without flash and with a userinterface made for P&S use it’s really not suited for the advanced users the GF1 is designed for.
So, what’s left? They could make it slightly smaller, they could add a viewfinder, but not a good one without increasing size. They don’t have a significantly better sensor yet – the image quality of the G2 is only slightly better. They probably want to introduce new features in a new high end model anyway so keeping the GF1 a while make sense, it’s not quite a year old yet.
Tobias W.
2 years ago |Even if there are problems with in body IS, they could disable it for video and enable it for still shots. As most people serious about video will use a tripod when shooting video it won’t make a difference for them.
spam
2 years ago |I’m not against in body IS, but Panasonic seem to be. Most people serious about video wont use a GF1 (or GF2).

2 years ago |Ok, a little disappointed, but i’m waiting for the gf2+14mm lens, so i can go on saving money at the meantime….
Derek
2 years ago |gf1 as has been said is a niche product but the niche is not the smallest interchangeable camera it is as a poor man’s digital leica . They need to make the gf2 more like the m series. Add a decent rangefinder styled(to one side instead of the center) viewfinder( it can be evf)and make the shutter very quiet and leave the size alone. Add some fast glass and you are playing to the real strengths of the gf series.

2 years ago |After several previous 43rumors up to FT4 level that there were one or even two new GF1 cameras coming this fall, this is a huge let down with none till next year.
This would seem to indicate that Pany is waiting for a new sensor or possibly even implimentation of the global shutter for the GF2 model? Means that rather than producing a smaller cheaper version of GF1 to compete with EPL1 and NEX3 as they indicated they would earlier, Pany is instead planning an upgraded model with special features of similar size to NEX5.
I think Pany has made a big marketing mistake in not producing their GF2 models with 14/f2.5 compact lens earlier even if using say GH1 sensor to stem the flood of sales to APSC mirrorless compacts the NEXs and soon NX100 and they need an affordable compact model in addition to the GF1 with 20/1.7 or kit zoom.
The new GH2 will likely come with not only a significantly better sensors & predicted better video capability (note improvements made in LX5 sensor & rumored E5 picture quality) as well as 12-75/f2.5-3.3 lens option a much better and faster lens for both stills & video.
With their generally higher camera and lens prices Olympus and Panasonic have let Sony overtake m4/3 with their more affordable and well featured mirrorless APS-C NEXs inspite of the larger size lenses and less convenient operating system.
However soon Samsung will be producing at least three mini lenses for their APSC small NX100 a 20/f2.8 and 30/f2 small primes and very small 20-50/f3.5-5.6 zoom equal to m4/3rds smallest.
The competition is good for bringing prices down but Oly and Pany cannot afford to delay any further in answering as they have already lost much of the momentum to Sony NEXs and soon Samsung NX100.

2 years ago |You guys are seriously complaining that there is no GF2 when the GF1 is fantastic…
I bought mine only a month ago, you have to realise this isn’t a piece of junk point and shoot that gets churned out every year.
Personally I hope they release a higher resolution EVF. Some say its not possible, but I’d be willing to guess the connector the GF1 has probably uses the same bus as the internal VFs on the Gx series.

2 years ago |Camelamel.com reports average price has been $750 (in the U.S.) for a while now, with a great price of $650 a month ago (I missed it) on the 20mm kit. Any date(s) as to when Panasonic will start lowering GF1 price closer to $650/NEX price?
Great blog, by the way. Was the villa expensive in Tuscany? Would you go there again?

2 years ago |Hi Martin! The Villa was awesome. I will go back in 6 weeks for a Photoshooting. Thats right after Photokina so no rumor no stress

2 years ago |How much of a price drop are we talking about on the GF1? approx to $650 for the kit? that is to say… current prices? LOL what a JOKE.
With the exception of G2, LX5, and MAYBE GH2… Panasonic could get on a time machine and bring their products from September 2009 to attend this years photokina. Lets see… almost every single pana model that was worth getting over the past year was over priced (GH1 and GF2). The lumix 14-140 is ridiculously overpriced. Lens alone costs more than GF1 body. I have no doubts that GH2 will be more expensive.
I am the consumers complete lack of excitement. The next announcement will be a GH1 price drop. Photokina 2010, so many hopes and expectations… talk about failure to launch

2 years ago |GF-1 is hardly 1 year old and its replacement is a far cry from being overdue. Besides, over 2 years, Panasonic has produced 5 bodies and 7 lens. Can’t see why anyone would be complaining!
safaridon
2 years ago |The GF1 indeed is a very good camera especially when equipped with 20/1.7 lens.
What I am disappointed in is Pany was strongly rumored to be coming out with a couple complimentary small models in addition to the GF1. One a more affordable version of GF1 and another GL1 in rangefinder body style with inbody EVF.
Admin – Whatever happened to the “Fake photo of GF2 which was posted on 43rumors about 3 weeks ago and then mysteriously vanished from site. This looked just like a mini LC1 slightly smaller than the EPL1 but with a real swivel screen but no inbody EVF? My reasoning Pany took steps to remove this “leak” of their potential product?
I believe Panys decisions are based on what has happend with the arrival of the Olympus EPL1 and the Sony NEXs. First the EPL1 while very popular killed the sales of the better build EP1 and forced Oly to reduce their price on EP2 because of competition with the EPL1. Pany maybe reasoned producing a more affordable model of GF1 would steal sales from both GF1 and new G10 so elected to reduce GF1 prices instead.
However the very rapid success of the Sony APSC NEX series has proved that small compact size, quality build, special features like good high ISO performance and more importantly economical affordable pricing is more important to consumers than necessarily a larger in body EVF model so Pany decided to defer producing that model which may have been already for production.
I expected that Pany would maybe produce a slightly modified model of GF1 with 14/F2.5 kit lens, touch screen, and added GH1 sensor with higher video capacity. Pany apparently not able to use a high resolution hotshoe mounted EVF because of limited space would cause interference with flash use. Presumedly the new model GF2 will have a modified flash design and provision for higher res EVF.
I was anxiously waiting to see a comparison between the new NX100 and GF2 but will have to wait impatiently as hope they will both have swivel rear screens which greatly reduces the need for EVFs to avoid strong sunlight conditions. Because of potential use of small legacy lens sizes at least up thru 200mm I want to go with m4/3.
Just my best guesses at best.

2 years ago |No biggie, bring on the GH2 please…
kww
2 years ago |Nothing wrong with the GF1 form factor, it would be a mistake if the GF2 gets ‘too’ small ala’ Sony NEX. Why don’t they hear the calls for a RF type form factor?
Martin
2 years ago |The GF1 kit was launched/announced in U.S. Sept 2009, so almost exactly a year. Pricing history (http://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B002MUAEX4) indicates a downward trend.
One of the closest competitors (just for the sake of comparison, not trying to start a comparison challenge here), the Oly EPL1 kit, was introduced at @$600. Sony has now entered into a similar product space with the NEX at a price-point similar to the EPL1.
There is no question that Pany has to lower the kit price on the GF1 in order to maintain market share, particularly if they are not going to introduce a jazzed-up version, as some posters detailed. That is the nature of the product lifecycle, and the longer Pany waits the more share they will loose – plus, if the NEX form factor gains traction (the thing is way too small for my taste) then Pany and Oly could suffer market share, and once marketing juggernauts Canon/Nikon enter it’s going to be a rough ride for Pany/Oly, imho.
So, Pany: carve out some space with a significant price drop, esp if you want to take the wind out of some of the Photokina press releases!

2 years ago |As long as the GH2/3 comes out and comes out strong, I’m OK with that. The GF2 should take some additional time in order to gauge the market and see where the competition is headed. It’s a wise move on Panasonic’s side to wait.
I would also love to see an M-like digital from Panasonic. Simple controls, improved sensor, combination optical/electronic built-in VF. It would sell fast.

2 years ago |Indeed, I really love my GF1… but it would be perfect with the same form factor and a built in viewfinder. Yes, why aren’t they hearing the calls for a rangefinder style version of the GF1? I know I’m repeating what others have said but I’m just hoping Panasonic are reading it all! Even if they announce it in early 2011 it’ll be an age before they’re readily available. Boo!

2 years ago |No surprise really. Panasonic seem to be on an 18 month product cycle for m4/3 products (if rumours of GH2 around Photokina are true). A GF2 release in spring 2011 seems right then.

2 years ago |I think it is interesting to see how many people are tasking down the NEX as a camera not for serious photographers. I think this is an indication for how people are feeling threatened and have to justify their own choice of hardware.
The truth is, NEX is an amazing little camera. Have a look on the internet and you wil find plenty of D700 and 5D users picking up the Sony as their 2nd camera. Look at all the articles taking about what Leica lens works well on the Nex. Does anyone believe these are not serious photographers?
In fact, NEX is for the non-serious AND serious, that is why they are doing so well, and if Nikon or Canon does not have an answer to this soon, they will run away with this category, as the serious canon and Nikon users will invest in this as a 2nd system.
Most criticism I have heard is regarding the menu system, and I must say I was very surprised when I first used it. It is bloody brilliant! Sure, you cannot go super quick to change ISO, but once you know where it is, it’s very quick to do do. In fact the menu is much better than in my Nikon D30b/5000.
The 5000 will now be sold. It was always too small without being small enough for my needs. I will be going for a D700 as my 2nd. Yeah, 2nd to the nex, simply because I will always have the nex with me everywhere and always without weighting me down or making me feel like an idiot!
Another thing that makes me laugh is people complaining about lack of viewfinder. It may be less convenient for some, but for those who call it less professional because of this, I guess you see yourselves as more professional than all those using the Hasselblad V system…
I was very tempted to get a 4/3 at one point, but seeing Steve Huff compare one with a Leica X1 made me leave that path, and I was never tempted again. Soon I can put leica glass on the NEX body and enjoy a great sensor and lens!
MaXX
2 years ago |Yes KRAGOM I agree that NEX is DEFINATELY the BEST!!! I got a SONY NEX3 for my birthday and it is GREAT especially for making MOVIES. My dad has a CANON REBEL 5D MkIII and he says it is DEFINATELY BETTER than PANASONIC too. I don’t know why this “ARTICLE” is about “GF2″ when it should be about NEX??? LOLOL M4/3!

2 years ago |DO we really need a GF2 (basicly the same just another color) or a GFL1 (the same technology, but without any comfort)? Like Olympus did?
NO! Thanks god Panasonic is not making the same sh*t like olympus. I believe the next GF will be in size of the LX5 with the same interface/buttons like GF1 (no restrictions).
I also believe that there will be a new Viewfinder. Panasonic showed that the like the idea of a evf (see LX-5) it could be a nice accessory for every compact camera.
I would just love a pricedrop to 550-600€ for the GF1C-Kit. It would see like candy.
II like that Sony started a downsizing war, but they cut all functions for manual control – that is NEVER aceptable.
Kragom
2 years ago |Sony did not cut functions for manual control, they just make you have to use the menu to set many of them, it is less of a problem than you may think, once you played some with it. It is not a Nikon D300 in terms of direct control, but who thought one of the smallest cameras would ever fight one of the largest on that front?
To be honest, I think it is partly a strategy as well. When you are first in a new category (tiny body, aps-c sensor, exchangeable lens) you can omit things that are later easy to add in later versions. This makes it easier to deliver upgrades with more substantial gains than if you start with a have-it-all. For the same reason it is no surprise that neither Canon nor nikon pioneered this class. They have more to loose here than Sony..
freiherr
2 years ago |I know users being users would love to have new toys as soon as possible but the reality is that there is a marketing factor built into the eco cycle of a product. For Japanese companies, the product cycle is always 12 months. So it should be time for a GF-2.
Actually, I would like to see an improvement withe the sensor but trusted that Panasonic’s main market are video cameras instead of still ones, sensor technology is not expected to improve much should it be a budget version. Anyway, Sony is challenging the dominance of the M43 and their strategy has always been to carpet bomb the market with a slew of low end products to squeeze out the competition. They have done this with low end DSLRs so Panasonic better beware.
