(FT3) Doubts about the next FourThirds announcement and the future roadmap
Although one reliable source confirmed that one FourThirds entry-level camera should be released in April, other sources expressed some doubts. I thought it would be better to let you know that. I asked the sources to check again the info they received about the next FourThirds camera.
Important editors note:
Lately I have noticed how difficult it has been for us to get reliable FourThirds rumors. The latest official Olympus statements make me believe the roadmap for FourThirds isn’t that clear. It surprises me how well our sources are doing with MicroFourThirds rumors but not so much with FourThirds rumors. That’s why I think that Olympus might have developed a new FourThirds working model but they are holding them back for unknown reasons.
I repeat, this is just my opinion, but I believe some kind of revolution is going on Olympus strategy.

2 years ago |Interesting. Truth is, if M43 is doing much better than Olympus expected, it would have to take another look at its future strategy and how it directs its R+D spending.
Personally, I think the whole 400/500/600 series line up will be radically re-ordered and reduced in scope. Still. I’m hoping for a new E3 with the latest Panasonic sensors. Olympus just has to build a camera with a sensor that can out run the excellent lenses…

2 years ago |I hope Olympus is paying attention to the market, rethink their strategy and wake up for m43.
I ‘m not expecting them to abandon 4/3 but if they really want a piece of the action they have got to take m43 seriously because m43 is a serious tool for serious photographers who use serious glass.

2 years ago |No new fourthirds gear for over a year now, except E-450 and E-600. I believe that alone implies that a fundamental change of strategy is in the works at Olympus.
I expect the E-3 successor to introduce new technologies which will then (2011) trickle down to mid-range and entry level. Such has been the case with E-1 and E-3. No new camera bodies until the “E-5″.
One more thing, the apparent hesitation regarding the release date of the new flagship could have one of two reasons: i) the new technology is of such scale that Olympus is waiting for its competitors’ announcements (e.g. D400 and 60D) and ii) the announcement could upset existing fourthirds users (e.g. if the “E-5″ is mirrorless).

2 years ago |I think the latest Olympus statements are very clear, the success of micro four thirds will be benefit the E3 successor for a number of reasons:
1.Shared R & D
2.Canon and Nikon users more willing to switch because Oympus and Panasonic have a proved themselves with Micro Four Thirds cameras that they have purchased
3. The adoption of by Canon/Sony/Pentax/Nikon of many four thirds ideas such as live view, dust removal, tiltable screens etc
4. I believe the E5 will have many features never seen before and it is these that are holding the E5 back for a short while
5. Magazines, shows and blogs have been a lot more positive about Four Thirds
6. I can see future flagship models been updated every 18-24 months there after
7. Don’t forget there might be another Four Thirds player coming to market soon

2 years ago |My personal hint on the topic: it is very unlikely that Olympus comes to introduce both a pro level m43 and the successor of the E-3 by, say around Photokina this year, my conjecture – also my wish – being that the E-5 will be a mirrorless camera.

First how can be m4/3 a serious Photographic tool, when all the m4/3 lenses have to be correct by software to be useful? This already implies that m4/3 is not a Professional System at all.
And then to be a Pro-System, where are all the Pro-Things in regards to Flash, Lenslinup etc. that 4/3 has? Not even Panasonic is providing any good stuff(The 7-14 can’t match the Zuiko and the 20mm is not anywhere near the Leica 25mm or Zuiko 50mm – of course in RAW where there is no automatic software correction going on). And even the 4/3 Setup is not complete when it comes to Pro compared to Canon or Nikon
And the other System around where m4/3 could have a shot at is Leica M and m4/3 is more then far far away from even preparing a shot…

I don’t think the lenses are useless when uncorrected but that’s your take as is the hardware/software correction issue. I don’t mind one bit about carrying glass that is 30% lighter and smaller but that needs SW correction as long as my RAW converter supports it. Nikon started SW correcting their lenses ages ago and I don’t see anyone pointing them out.
I never said this isn’t a PRO system, I said It was a serious tool but I’ll get back to that in an instant. Please enlighten me of what other system gives me get WYSIWYG on the viewfinder in matters such as DOF, EXPOSURE and WB and I’ll call it a serious tool Anything from Nikon/Canon?
I don’t think so!
You can also start telling me of any digital system that is widely used for shooting Leica glass and I’ll throw you back the price.
Then you throw a pack of the best lenses ever made for digital in a system that has been nearly 10 years in the works and then expect to get the same in a system that’s nearly 2 yeards old?I don’t think you’re beeing intelectually honest in this issue and I don’t think you have the right picture about the m43 Panasonic 7-14mm and I’m not talking about size, I’m talking IQ, that’s right!
About the PRO system, give m43 two more years and check back. Even though you can use most of the considered PRO 4/3 system line up on m43 with limitations (which might be disconsidered in some studio environments /setups) I’m sure this is the way and when Olympius releases their upper segment m43 model you might start to think differently. At the moment they are in it for the money (and not even doing close to a good job as Panasonic) but soon they’ll realize they’ll be in it for survival, and when that moment comes my friend, they’ll have to stand up to expectations.

2 years ago |I am just a faithful Olympus shooter (E500, E620) getting ready to upgrade, who needs a faster weather proofed camera by this autumn. I so hope I can stick with Oly, but… I do not want to buy the E3, I want a better sensor than it has, and I am happy I can if necessary crop more with my E620 than my E500.
So…I am checking this site every other day, hoping for news abt a E3 replacement.
I wish I could get an Ep2 as well, but my needs are different….so…

2 years ago |I would imagine there’s a LOT of head scratching going on at Olympus over their 4/3 camera systems. I think Panasonic has already reached the conclusion that the m4/3 format is the replacement for the 4/3 format. Olympus hasn’t yet. I’m sure the unreliability over these rumors stems from internal strife between the different divisions at these companies all vying to stay relevant in the face of overwhelming positive response to the MFT format.
