If it only supports 1080/60p (or 50p for PAL markets) it would be a huge step backward. Unless I’m doing slow-mo, have absolutely no use for 1080/60p and will only suck up data bitrate that is short to begin with. Canon did the frame rates right with the 7d and are now promising more advanced codecs. I really don’t want to favor Canon, and it’s too soon to denounce Panny, but I’d like to hear more positive news from them and 1080/60p is not it.
More frame rates will obviously be better, but 1080p 60fps sounds awesome. I’ll take it.
I don’t think this is no new news and collaborates much of what has been projected before. For starters to me indicates one of two possibilites”
1. G2 will be in new smaller L1 rangefinder body style that all are waiting for with HD & EVF
2. Existing GH1 body may be streamlined with more or less the same parts of existing but body will be less prominent to match competition from NX10. A less prominent grip more like that of L1 for starters and more angular shape for the EVF and flash.
While the news of projected GH2 for third quarter is not new however the specs would seem to indicate that the breakthru in rumored new Pany sensor enabling the 1080P HD is not ready for implimentation yet for combining with the global electronic shutter to be used in future models. Note use of HD 1080 mode and much higher fps was tied to implimentation of CMOS back-illuminated sensors and use of electronic or rolling(?)shutters so likely similar situation here but as with compacts some issues still being resolved. Not surprising that this would be first implimented in new high end model.
Now please just send us some sketches, renditions, or better yet photos to give us an indication of what these might be?
I think the 1080P (60/50) at 24bits were what most were asking for.
Could you clarify what you mean by “available the months after”? Do you mean one lens each in March, April, May? If so, what order? If not, could you pinpoint a bit on when those are coming?
Let me put it this way, if a camera only support 1080/60p, then it would be instantly dismissed as a viable purchase by over 90% of filmmakers, independent or otherwise. (filmmakers need 1080/24p or more accurately, 23.976fps) As a stills camera, it will stand on its own merits, but if it instantly looses a significant portion of the market, it will have to be priced higher and will not have as long of a lifespan, two things that would be detrimental to any owner / prospective owner.
DMC-GH1 already does this:
Full-HD (1920 × 1080) movies are output by the image sensor at 24p (NTSC) / 25p (PAL), and recorded at 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL). HD (1280 × 720) movies are output and recorded by the image sensor at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL).
Most important for European users – we rather see that the movie feature has 50p (PAL), since we don’t intend to change our power generators and distribution from 50Hz to 60Hz.
@European power
GH1 records in 60i or 50i but the rumors talked about 60P/50P . It’s a huge difference.
I think the confusing thing is that a lot of different 24p / 60p / 60i terms are being thrown around and they are not referencing the same thing. If you were to record 1080 @ 24 frames per second and it is placed in a 1080/60i container like the GH1 and many other consumer cameras… compare that to the same 1080 @ 24 frames per second stored in a 1080/60p container… there actually isn’t any significant difference at all, assuming that the encoding / decoding quality is the same. Inherently, 1080/60p data storage doesn’t really give you any performance advantage, it only breaks backwards compatibility with being able to display the signal directly on a legacy HDTV that doesn’t support 1080/60p. Most people have never seen “true 1080/60p”. It simply does not exist in the wild, outside of some rare test/promo/highlight Blu-Ray that I’m not aware of. Even though your Blu-Ray is hooked up to your TV with a 1080/60p transport, it doesn’t magically change the frame rate that the content was originally captured at. I reiterate, those who care about video features need (NTSC) 1080p @ 23.976, 24, 29.97, and 30 fps. If you wish to do slow motion work, higher frame rates might be advantageous, but for no other reason I can think of. For our PAL friends, include 25 and 50 fps of course.

Tom, it’s typical that you specify the maximum framerate that you support, not the complete listing. Just because it may support 1080p 60hz, doesn’t mean it won’t support 24fps. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Panasonic is very aggressive at marketing the GH series as the best video solution for video enabled cameras, I’m sure they’re looking at the competition and hope to meet or exceed them with the GH2.
Hi Joesiv,
Hence my “it’s to soon to denounce Panny” and I’m sure they will support 24p too, but there have been quite a few surprises and “what the hell” moments with camera releases and video. Like the Canon 5D recording sound at 44.1KHz instead of 48KHz, GH1 with low bitrate codec and basic profile with no B-frame support, EP-2 that can either use an EVF or mic, but not both (I can forgive that it doesn’t support 24p, prosumer videography was never it primary intended market, mostly home movie types). So far, the clear best choice for video at a good price point is the Canon 7D. The clear winner at a premium pricepoint for crossover cameras is the Canon 1DMkIV… and I have no love for Canon nor do I wish to invest in Canon glass. I really really want a m43 product, as it fits what I need at a price and form factor that the others can’t, but neither Panny nor Olympus have delivered even a single product that really competently handles the basics. Closest we have is the GH1, but its not good enough.
I am looking forward to the GH2, and I hope it looses the DSLR styling and adopts a more rangefinder-like profile too. I could care less about built in flash, could even do without a built in LCD, but that is probably an extreme design feature. For those of you who are still photographers and could care less about video, let me just say, we’re not competing against each other. Video features are not exclusive of still features. Anything that we want does not take away at all from the functionality as a still camera. What it will accomplish, if it (GH2) is successful both as a motion and still camera is that it can leverage the buying power of two independent markets and capitalize on the volume price savings and future product maturity that m43 rightfully deserves. I really believe that the size of the sensor is ideal for cinematography in situations where your not going to be shooting RED, for example, and that with some more advances, there will no longer be any full frame envy for stills either.
What i need is avc-intra and video out while recording
