9 months ago |pretty sure this is because gh3 is coming out with the 12-35 as kit lens

9 months ago |Well, that’s getting closer to reasonable. Another $200 and I might start taking sideways looks at my Canon 24-70.
Anonymous
9 months ago |Well, if you buy it bundled with a GX1 body or G3 with kit you will get snother $200 discount.
Mike
9 months ago |Yup. Drop it to $899 and sold.

Fred
9 months ago |There is another US$ 200,00 discount if you buy the 12-35mm bundled with some Pana cameras (like GH2 or GX1 bodys, or G5 with 14-42mm kit). Not bad $899,00 for that lens.

9 months ago |It seems that there should/will be a GH3/12-35 bundle at a decent rate. I’m holding off until I sight such a beast. I’d be OK with US$2k for the package.

9 months ago |GH3 + 12-35mm f2.8 X kit is rumored to sell for $2,199.
Lower than expected, but higher than affordable for many people. Here’s hoping in 2013 it prices under the notable psychological barrier of $2K.

9 months ago |US$2200? OK, depending on when this transpires. I didn’t preorder the GH3. Maybe after the first shipments of GH3 preorders are filled, Pan will offer the bundle a few weeks before xmas. Then I would spend my $2200.
Steve
9 months ago |This bodes well for a lower than expected GH3 kit price.

9 months ago |admin, some important advice: when you link to other sites, you can’t type in the link starting with “www”, you have to start with “http://”. Otherwise the URL is assumed to be relative to the current page, which is why the BHPhoto links in this article are broken and result in a 43rumors.com 404 “Page not found.” I’ve noticed this a lot lately on this site.

9 months ago |The beauty of capitalism. Price action is dictated by the laws of supply and demand. Although this may have been planned. Businesses often charge a premium to first time movers and initial adopters, as these customers have a much lower price elasticity of demand.

I wouldn’t characterize the behavior as “lower price elasticity of demand”.

9 months ago |The luke warm reviews that the lens has been getting haven’t been helping.
babbit
9 months ago |Lukewarm reviews? The reviews from all the top photo sites have all given this lens some of the highest reviews and ratings ever. All the technical tests (sharpness, CA, Distortion, Vignetting, etc…) show this as one of the best zoom lens ever made. The lowest reviewed score I’ve seen on this lens is a 4.5/5 stars because of the price.
Anonymous
8 months ago |Nope, dpr forum has several people grumbling that it is very good, but not great. It’s a zoom so no one expects prime performance. But at $1200…
Darryl
9 months ago |There’s been one negative (lukewarm, really) review from Photozone: http://www.photozone.de/m43/766_pana1235f28
Their major gripe is that chromatic aberation isn’t optically corrected, which is an issue for Olympus bodies shooting jpg or video. Corrected in camera on Panasonic bodies and easily fixed in post (lightroom, dxo, etc.) when shooting raw.

9 months ago |$1300? wow this system must be pro. drop it to $899 and watch the plebs roll out the red carpet. at least we can count on the gangsters at olympus for $90 lens hoods that cost <$5 to make and yet the "performance is there"; so when i attach it i show others my O face

8 months ago |hopefully this lens will be covered by DXO in a few months and we won’t have to worry about CA or distortion on Oly bodies.

8 months ago |It’s all a game. I cringe at the exponential devaluation of digital technology and thus never buy in on introduction but rather midstream. Besides, I run my gear into the ground so 1/2 the time, I’ve got years of life still in my current tools. Then again, that’s my pro past showing itself.
Camera manufacturers ( and other gadget maker) are laughing all the way to the bank as the Millennial Generation empties out their trust funds in chase of the latest toys! Oh! to be a Japanese camera maker
amalric
8 months ago |Very true I had just a discussion about the overpriced X Pro 1 and the 12-35 at the µ43 forum and they were out for my blood. Middletown America must still be very affluent to gobble those prices without flinching.
But two weeks later, when the prices crumble the king is naked, and they go beserk, those morons
. Sometimes I feel that the lagging technology attitude is the only game in town. But go tell gearholics, they just get their guns.
As you say the Japanese companies myst laugh all their way to the bank, Consider also that the top of the line is usually designed for the US. The Japanese public is much more modest, and that is one reason why the small Pens came long before the OM-D and other flagships.
GEG
8 months ago |Ignoring your usual anti-American racist BS . The Japanese market is anything but conservative or modest the demand for ever newer gadgets rages more in Japan than most countries. In every market in the world logic dictates that more sales of low end products will be made than of high end this is simple common sense

8 months ago |I wonder. It was Mr. Terada at PK 2012 who remarked that each country has a size preference. The American’s preference for BIG and expensive is notorious.
Lynching the critics and the dissenters is also a National trait, although I had some American friends who were v. critic of this sheepish behaviour.
To whom do you belong Mr. GEG? This site is quite outspoken, so you’re out of luck…

8 months ago |Drop it to $499 and I will buy it. Anything above is ludicrous. You have four times less glass than in a similar FF lens — it should cost four times less.
The other Mike H
8 months ago |There is more to the price of a lens then just glass, and it’s all relative. I work in TV, and a good video lens for a 2/3″ camera costs $15,000. For what I’m getting, a video optimized 12-35mm lens for a m4/3 camera for $1,100 seems like a steal. Personally, I’ll be ordering this and preordering the 35-100 X next week, and I should have it paid off after a couple of shoots.

8 months ago |Still overpriced. But at the rate it falls, we might see it reasonably priced in just a year!
Kyle
8 months ago |Yeah. Although the price was reduced, it’s still overpriced indeed.
amalric
8 months ago |My point was made *after* the Photozone review. The 12-35 is sharp at the center, but not so at the edges.
So even if it might be convenient for marriage photogs. which will offset easily the cost it is not so for ordinary enthusiast, or those who think they can replace a bunch of primes with it.
