Worldwide Panasonic GF1 and Olympus E-PL1 price drop analysis.

As you might now the Panasonic GF1 is now selling for $599 at Amazon. That’s an incredible $90 price drop compared to last week price and a $220 price drop compared to the last month price. The Olympus E-PL1 with 14-42mm Lens (Black) sells for $499. Such price drops do allow the mirrorless market to compete against the low-entry DSLR. The Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm Lens sells for $646 and the Canon EOS Rebel T2i with 18-55mm Lens for $849. For a long time an argument against the new mirrorless camera was that those cameras were too expensive. Of course DSLR can offer some advantages but so do mirrorless cameras (compact cameras and lenses, less weight and no mirror movement, etc.). The recent price drops could become more important than any new camera announcement. No excuses now, if you want a compact high-quality camera it’s time to get the [shoplink 14828]GF1[/shoplink] or the [shoplink 14832]E-PL1[/shoplink]!

The graph from Idealo.de shows the GF1 price drop in Germany (on the Panasonic GF1-14-25mm kit). The graph below shows the Olympus E-PL1+14-42mm price drop.

Trendy.Nikkei.jp worte an article about the recent Panasonic GF1 price drops. On the graph above you see the price trend comparison bertween the Panasonic GF1 (violet) and the Sony NEX-5 (green). Even if there is a GF2 coming in a few months they suggest to buy the GF1 because the price is very low.

Panasonic LX5 news and reviews

Share

Cameralabs posted a long Panasonic LX5 review: “So ultimately a great camera has become even better, but the biggest problem facing the Lumix LX5 is the availability of compacts boasting considerably larger sensors and the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.” And how does the LX5 compare with the Micro Four Thirds sensor? A dpreview forum user tried to find the answer by comparing the LX5 with the E-PL1.
Amateur Photograher says about the LX5: “Yet the new sensor design does go some way towards improving both the dynamic range and noise beyond what we have seen from the last generation of compact cameras. Overall, I am very impressed with the LX5.
Also Digitalcamerareview and Infosync tested the LX5.

And as you know there is a Leica clone of the LX5 which of course is much more expensive. But ThePhoBlographer gives you 4 Reasons why You Should Get the Leica D-LUX 5 vs Panasonic LX-5.

[shoplink 16261][/shoplink] The czech website Fotografovani just posted a detailled [shoplink 16261]Panasonic 100-300mm[/shoplink] review. They have taken many image samples at different apertures and focal lenghts (including vignetting test). In summary they”were surprised by the high quality of the optical output“. And those are the pros and cons:

Advantages:

  • Excellent resolution by stopping down to medium apertures
  • Very low levels of chromatic aberration
  • Quiet and quick AF Focus
  • Effective optical stabilization system
  • Good contrast
  • Compact size and weight
  • High zoom performance (200 to 600mm on 135 format)
  • Good price
  • Lens Hood for the price

Potential drawbacks:

  • Plastic body (except the lens mount)
  • Focal length markings are not painted entirely accurate (about 2mm difference at some focal lengths)
  • No distance scale for manual focusing
  • Initial aperture begins at the value of F4

It’s hard to find good, fast and cheap prime lenses and it is even harder to find zoom lenses! The [shoplink 17068]Canon 25-100mm f/1.8[/shoplink] is one of the few cheap and fast zoom lenses. You can find some image samples at 406club.dyndns.org. They used the Panasonic G1 to take the pictures.
Advent (DVXuser forum user) tested that lens on Micro Four Thirds cameras and said that it is “extremely fast zooming and very sharp
