Philip Coltart: Hacked GH2 smokes the RED Epic camera!

Share

RED Epic verus Panasonic GH2 from Philip Coltart on Vimeo.

And this is what Philip Coltart wrote as a comment on his vimeo page:
Ok I can see we’re getting to the point of this post where splitting hairs is all that’s left. I didn’t weigh the camera. We had some odds and ends on it and I can tell you it certainly felt like. 25lbs. Not a negative point. It is solidly built. Not a run and gun shooter. I left this review open for your interpretation but I will state strongly that I expected the RED to perform the same as a good 1080p cam like the GH2, only 5 times bigger. Mark my words clearly, because I was with the Epic for four days and on the phone extensively with RED, this camera is NOT sharp, pixel for pixel compared to the GH2. When you Zoom the RED raw files to 100% and you look at the GH2 at 100%, the GH2 smokes it. SMOKES IT! and I am not talking about false sharpening. I am saying the RED Is soft and creamy like a 7D with a crap lens on it. On top of that, anyone boasting 300 frames is grasping at straws because what RED doesn’t tell you is that when shooting at 300 or even 120, you Redcode goes to crap. 12:1 and that, my friends looks like junk.l at 5K and I will happily load the raw files or you to see. I’ll be blunt, now that this post has run its course, the RED was a complete disappointment to the hype. I don’t have to be a Hollywood pro to see it either. Which I think is all the more a testimony. Thank you for all of your thoughts.

Olympus: Chairman and President Kikukawa resigns and attacks Woodford: “he did not like Japan”

Share

Before friends, now enemies. Kikukawa and Woodford.

Olmypus CEO Tsuyoshi Kikukawa “has stepped down due to a series of media reports on the company’s problems and a plunge in its share price“. (Source: Reuters). But the whole current Olympus board is still devoted to Kikukawa and I don’t think that will be enough to stop the critics. Today Olympus lost -7% at Nikkei (Source: Bloomberg).

A couple of days ago Kikukawa attacked ex-Ceo Woodford with an internal company memo. Electronista writes that: “In the memo, Kikukawa stated that Woodford’s recent actions were the result of nothing more than a failed power grab. Using Woodford’s initials, Kikukawa stated that, Director MCW was not satisfied unless he could control everything himself.” And the most surprising attack is that Woodford broke company management rules, and even “did not like Japan.”. If you want to read Olympus explanation of the story and arguments against Woodford read their official statement: http://www.olympus-global.com/en/corc/ir/tes/pdf/nr111019.pdf

P.S.: The New York Times posted some details about the mysterious Cayman company owners. And one more article form the NYT (Click here) about the acquisition story.

Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 Summilux review (Digitalrev)

Share

The video on top shows the Panasonic-Leica 25mm f/1.4 review made by Digitalrev. The lens itself is in Stock in most part of the worlds with one single exception…USA! Looks like Panasonic has something against the states? Is the market not important enough for you? We europeans have plenty of Panasonic-Leica in Stock in many stores. This is the list I usually check to see where I can get the lens. As usual just click on the shopname to see the Panaosnic-Leica search page:

“Nikon 1” sells well in USA. What should Panasonic and Olympus learn?

Share

I am surprised. I just checked the Amazon mirrorless camera ranking (Click here) and Nikon seems to sell their new J1 and V1 very well! Four cameras made it into the top 20 and I am trying to understand why Nikon is succeeding. One thing is sure, I saw massive advertising on European newspaper, tv’s and blogs. Something I never saw before. Nikon perfectly coordinated the launch of these cameras. It is certainly something not even comparable with what Panasonic and Olympus are doing. And another thing I noticed is that the Nikon cameras are in Stock less than one month after the announcement. If you look at the [shoplink 23110]Panasonic-Leica 25mm f/1.4[/shoplink] lens that has been announced in early June is still NOT in Stock in US stores than you can get an idea of how good Nikon’s (or how bad Panasonic’s) strategy is.

Let me know what you think:

Why is Nikon 1 selling well:

P.S.: These are the other Amazon rankings: Uk mirrolress, DE mirrorless, FR mirrorless., JP cameras. As you can see the Nikon sales are not as good as in the US!

(FT5) Sources explains why “The GX1 is much better than you think”.

Fake GX1 designed by our friends from Blog.livedoor

As you know a new Panasonic GX1 camera will be announced on November 8 in Japan. It has not a built-in viewfinder a la [shoplink 25396]NEX-7[/shoplink] and not a brand new sensor (same sensor as the [shoplink 22077 ebay]Panasonic G3[/shoplink]. Two of my top sources had the chance to play with the new Panasonic GX1 camera. After reading your comments on 43rumors they contacted me to say that the camera is actually much better than “your readers do think”.

First: the Panasonic GX1 has a very sexy looking and very high quality body. It’s a camera that feels extremely robust and well in your hands. The quality of the buttons for example is higher than the buttons from the [shoplink 16254 ebay]Panasonic GH2[/shoplink].
Second: Semi-pros that loved the [shoplink 14828]Panasonic GF1[/shoplink] will like the new GX1. It is not a revolution but more a very well thought evolution of the GF1.
Third: The image quality beats every Panasonic camera to date. It has the same G3 sensor but also a new much improved processing engine. One of my soruces said that i his opinion this is the camera with the best image quality to date.

In summary, some of us may be disappointed to know that this is not a [shoplink 25396]NEX-7[/shoplink] competitor with built.in viewfinder. But the sources are pretty sure that you will like the new camera anyway because it’s a real advanced and mature photographic tool.

I should soon get more details about the GX1. Feel free to help em to find rumors on the www. If you get some interesting news drop me a message at 43rumors@gmail.com or use the anonymous contact form on the right sidebar. Thanks! And don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

P.S.: I asked one of the sources why Panasonic didn’t make a camera with a built-in viewfinder like the [shoplink 26385 ebay]Panasonic LC1 (Click here to see that cam on ebay)[/shoplink]. His opinion is that Panasonic didn’t want to compete against his own [shoplink 22077]Panasonic G3[/shoplink]. If that opinion corrisponds to truth than Panasonic is making a huge mistake (that’s now my personal opinion!).
