Editor’s note: After four years of existence I decided to finally create some space for all MFT camera ownsers. You can now write articles for 43rumors by submitting them at 43rumors@gmail.com. This is the first article of the new series written by 43rumors reader Niles (myfashioninspiration.creatorsofdesire.com).

Niels:

I’ve been using MFT since the moment I started photography a couple of years ago (first an Olympus E-PL1, now a Panasonic GH2). Primarily to make fashion photos and videos of my girlfriend for her fashion blog. In this streetstyle/fashion world there is one dominant style of photography: fast lenses wide open to make the subject really pop out of the street.

To push this style to the max a lot of fashion bloggers use a full frame camera and I had set my mind on getting one myself until I had a chance to borrow a Canon 5D mkIII for a couple of days and did some comparing. The results of this comparison were actually surprising to me.

Because, like a lot of bloggers, I only really use the photos for web and never print, I decided to make the comparison as practical as possible and non scientific. I put down a tripod, took a shot with my Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 (wide open) on the GH2, then the same shot with the Canon 50mm f1.2L wide open on the 5D mkIII and then scaled both images down to the resolution I use on the web. I kept the images as raw as possible and only made slight color changes to make them match better.

There is a difference in depth of field noticeable but it really did make me think again if it was worth the extra thousands of euros. There are some obvious advantages to an expensive camera like the mkIII, the auto focus of the f1.2L was a welcome feature for photography compared to my Voigtlander, the low light quality was great and in full resolution the sharpness and details were noticeable but I also came home with a sore wrist after walking around with the mkIII in my hand for a day where as the GH2 is relatively light weight and compact. And scaled down to a web resolution the images start looking alike more and more.

I decided to stick with MFT for the time being. I’m also curious to see what effects Speedbooster solutions could have on the depth of field. But to the millions of fashion bloggers out there who feel they can only make blog photos with a full frame camera: a mirrorless camera with a fast lens might just do the trick for you for a fraction of the price and weight.

If you’re curious for more MFT fashion material: last year I made this short film on the GH2 using the Voigtlander 25mm f0.95, the SLRmagic Hyperprime 12mm f1.6 and a vintage OM lens: https://vimeo.com/54944767

Kind regards and thanks for the great blog!

Niels

Editors’s note: Some topics I am interested in:

– Professional on field reviews. Unlike DxO or Dpreview what I want is to learn more about the real life use of cameras and lenses! No charts or pixel peeping needed :)
– Testing of little known lenses
– Funny stories around the use of MFT
– System comparison: Example,  switching from DSLR to MFT system

Olympus body cap lens comes in three new colors. And gets tested at Dpreview and ePhotozine

Share

In case you didn’t know it the Olympus Body Cap Lens now will come in White, Silver and Red too (Source: Olympus Global). I see you jump off chair for joy :)

And if you are considering to buy it than read the two brand new reviews:

Dpreview (Click here) writes:

“It certainly won’t be for everyone, but photographers who are able to accept, and even exploit its limitations could find it a useful piece of kit. At the end of the day I’ve personally rather enjoyed shooting with it”

ePhotozine (Click here) writes:

“For quick results, and a relatively low price, the body cap lens delivers reasonable results, and with an Olympus camera, delivers bright saturated colours, which will look great when shared on the web.”

The body cap lens now sells for $39 at Amazon US (Click here).

Kodak MFT camera release postponed to next year?

Share

As you know a couple of times Kodak stated that the new S1 MFT camera would be released the second half of this year. But now ePhotozine reports that Kodak “aims to release a Micro Four Thirds compact system camera some time in 2014.“.

It’s still unknown what the final specs will be. But at least we know how it looks:

First Nikon G Speed Booster testing…

Metabones Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster test with Blackmagic camera from Philip Bloom Reviews & Tutorials on Vimeo.

The new Nikon to m4/3 speed booster already got tested by Ed on DVXuser (Click here):

“I can tell you I LOVE that with this adapter I’m getting closer to what the original FOV is on the lens. Now that each lens is a bit wider- my 28mm “looks” more like what I remember it’s supposed to. The m4/3 crop factor is now not so much of an issue with my old Nikkor primes. And of course the extra stop of light never hurts!!”

The OM adapter will now come as next!

Panasonic LF1 in Stock in USA. E-P5 to ship soon.

Share

The new Panasonic LF1 is now in Stock for the first time in USA via BHphoto (Click here). That camera left us with a bit of mixed feelings. Certainly a nice camera but not a real winner in the higly competitive compact camera market. It’s rumored that Olympus will release a high end compact camera soon. I hope it will feature a larger sensors to compete against the Sony RX100.

And finally the E-P5 will ship on June 12 (body only) and June 15 (superkit) according to Amazon US (Click here).

The other MFT camera deals:
GH3 for $1,028 (with 2% reward included) at Amazon US (Click here).
G5 with 14-42mm lens for $349 and free 32GB SD card at Samys (Click here).
G5 with double lens kit and free $100 Gift Card(!) at Adorama (Click here) for $598 (or $498 if you detract the gift card).
E-P3 for $329 at Amazon (Click here).

GX7 image and specs roundup. Do you like the design?

Share

GX7 patent image colored by Dicahub.

Next month Panasonic will finally show us the real new Panasonic GX7 camera. It’s time to make a roundup of the specs and images and ask you guys if you actually like the new cameras.

1) The camera design goal was to take inspiration from the superbly designed [shoplink 36080 ebay]Four Thirds L1 camera (here on eBay)[/shoplink].
2) The Sensor is a new 18 megapixel Bayer sensor. I am 100% sure this doens’t have the new organic tech devloped by Fuji-Panasonic. It’s still a long time to go before you wills ee that tech in a MFT camera
3) It is the first Panasonic camera with in body stabilization. it is not as advanced as the Olympus 5 axis stabilization. This is a “normal” 2 axis IS.
4) Pop up flash and titlable built-in EVF. There is still no info about the EVF resolution but an anonymous source told me it’s not the same GH3 viewfinder (FT2 for now).
5) It also has a tilting LCD (resolution unknown).

Now assuming specs and design presneted in this post are correct:

Do you like the new GX7?

I am still (very busy) working on the next bunch of GX and OMD rumors. I got a small detail from a source about the name of the new Panasonic camera. It is the “Panasonic DMC-GX7“. The rumors till has not been confirmed by my trusted sources but I “believe” it’s the correct final name. Bloggers and forum owners and ebay sellers can now start to create their GX7 forums. Meantime I made a GX7 group on Facebook and a Google+ page :)

All specs got confirmed, the camera is bigger than previous models and design reminds the [shoplink 36080 ebay]Four Thirds L1 camera (here on eBay)[/shoplink]. It has a new 18MP sensor but I don’t yet if that is multiaspect or the new color splitter sensor. It has the built-in image stabilization which is not the same and not as advanced as the one from Olympus. It has a built-in viewfinder that you can tilt up.

I found it quite funny that a terrific good source told me that Panasonic made the camera for me :)  Thanks you Panasonic engineers!

Patent: Possible GX7 design spotted!

Share

Digifotopro spotted a patent showing that Panasonic MFT camera design. The chance is high this could be the final Panasonic GX7 design. Digifoto calls it GX2 but we know from our sources this will be the GX7 and feature a new 18MP sensor, tilt screen, built-in on sensor stabilization and obviously an integrated viewfinder. The viewfinder can be tilted and that’s the first time ever we have this on a digital mirrorless camera. The GX7 will be announced in late August!

The GX7 is bigger than the current GX1

So…do you like it???
