That’s great news! Making what seems like a great camera even better. Hopefully this time they will not name the hack after a mass murderer…

    • freetibet

    • ozymandias

hahaha. You know the gh1 was lenin right?

      • So the hacks are traditionally named after mass murderers? Yikes!

      • jb

no, the original gh1 hack was just gh13/vk, which was great. the later hack, or gh17 (for the unhackable batch of cameras), was a lenin hack.

  • Ready to make a GH3 ornamental brick??
Joking aside, it would be interesting to see what can come from the genius mind of hackers working on not yet on the market GH3

    • Dugo

Personal View hackers are finally put out of business by Panasonic, he-he-he. Since there is absolutely no reason any more to hack into the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3’s firmware, these assorted hackers better find some other makes and models of cameras that actually could benefit from hacking to improve their video capabilities.

The GH3 does not need this, and at US$1,300, is just too darn expensive to take that significant risk, anyhow. But I guess if you try hacking it hard enough, you could always make it worse, right?

  • Heat Legend

Does pretty much everything I’d hope it would do right out of the box…

    • Pavlo

It’s just a clever way to buy your dream-cam not spending for it :)

  • Luis

From the DxO analysis of the G5 published this week,
I hope the hackers get a Sony sensor for the GH3…..

    • o8i0980

Yeh that half to one stop difference with e-m5 is huge lol if you idiots are that keen on image quality there are no shortage of Sony sensored APS cameras that are already better and FF sony sensor cameras that are much better

      • Duarte Bruno

        Don’t bother…
People are just too mentally challenged to look at the graphs. That’s why DxOMark pushes numbers down their throats and that’s what keeps them happy. :(

      • homer

get over it, APS C cameras suck.

  • Great news. My 3-year-old GH1 is still running stable!

I wonder how much they need to raise for the hack.

    • caver3d

      How about $1300?

  • Bimbo

1.28Gbps bitrate, 8:4:4 color space, and Pocus Feaking.

  • Paul Alexander

After verrrrrry long and ultimately unsuccessful hack attempt on the Canon HV20 (yes ancient history) , I’ve sworn off of Crowd Funded Hacks with pre-payments. I much prefer to hear that Panasonic Co. is board. Based on the interview feedback from Photokina, that may not be the case.
Anyway, we wish VK and others, all the best of good luck in this.
I’d frefer to wait till a year of hacking has passed before committing.

    • ozymandias

You do realize the GH1 and GH2 hacks were both completely successful and pre-funded, right? I know because I hacked my GH2 18 months ago.

  • werner

I don´t think they can do much… Panasonic should outscource their digital engineering and create an open source firmware, then maybe…

but as a dreamer I say, electronic ND Filters and of course the already mentioned 18 Bit 8:4:4 coulor sampling

    • chauffeurdevan

Yeah, 8:4:4 would be a great update from the 8:4:0 that is currently in the GH2/GH3. Or is it the 16:8:0 ?

  • randello

    120fps@720p would be funny.

  • $10 sent

    thanks VK&Co.

  • Tropical Yeti

    Hmmm… Ideas what to hack…

What about OM-D emulator. You know – emulating Olympus colors, Olympus menus – everything to make Olympus users feel at home on GH3.

Then optical viewfinder emulator – to simulate OVF on EVF.

Film camera emulator – you know – emulating whirling sound of film running through camera… that would be inovative…

I will come up with more when I think it over… :-)

  • Camaman

    How about in-EVF 5 axis IBIS emulator…

  • Marco

Maybe they can add black bands to frame the picture in a different aspect ratio. Or they can add a flat picture profile to get a LOG-like image.
Anyway the firmware is not definitive so these are options we could see in a near future by Panasonic.
If they can get a 10bit 4.2.2 codec it’s worth the effort. Otherwise with a 8bit 4.2.0 the bitrate is already ok.

    • dau

Hack the em5 and make a grip emulator, haha im so funny!

  • leov74

Something like Magic Lantern for Lumix GH serie would be great: Focus racking/stacking/peaking, zebras, time lapse, cropmarks, motion detection.

    • Yes to zebras and focus peaking. Can’t understand why the GH3 doesn’t have these if Panasonic are serious about this cam being useful for working videographers.

  • Cellardoor

    Awesome, a wishlist ;-)

-AE Bracketing with 2 stops increments, not just 1
    -Bracketing + Timelapse
-Choice of 25, 30, 50, 60 fps, no matter if you bought it in Europe or USA.
    -100 or 120fps 720, if possible
-what marco said, a black frame for different aspect ratios

Besides that, I hope some developers will make use of the Wlan possibilities for nice tethered shooting programms/apps.

    • homer

theres already 25,30,50 and 60p right off the box no matter where you buy it.
      Do people actually read anymore?

      • Cellardoor

Sorry, but why aren´t people polite anymore?
The GH2 can not take 30 or 60 fps in pal countries (without hack).
Panasonic Germany also only lists 25 or 50 for the gh3.
So if I´m wrong, let me know, I´d be happy…

        • Dugo

Who cares about that ancient DMC-GH2 — this here now is October 2012, and we are talking about its fresh new replacement, the Lumix DMC-GH3, see?

Also, this is from a JAPANESE camera manufacturer, so I am not sure what their German models does or does not do. Best ask the appropriate EU commissions about what they even permit now in Europe — addresses for these eurocrats are in Brussels, Belgium and/or Strasbourg, France.

      • CobyD

@homer – got a link for that info? Great if true, but I’m sceptical …

  • Mr. Reeee

    Activate the multi-aspect ratio sensor!

The thing is, we don’t really know the final, final specs or what Panasonic has in mind for future firmware updates.

    • LOT

Ditto. But I wonder if this sensor is suitable.

      • Camaman

        Who will know?
Enable 1:1 and rescale the image to native resolution! hahahaha!

  • Jonny

A simple full description of the features they have add.
The hack for the GX1 is still beta right?

And I can´t find any description of features for the GX1. Are there some like ISO change for video???

I rest my case on the Olympus Fanboyism.

  • I really, really hope that VK et al. can make the HDMI output 4:2:2 rather than the reported 4:2:0, for better keying, grading and broadcast acceptability. No idea if this is possible but it would be my biggest request for the hack by far. What’s the point in recording a 4:2:0 signal to an external recorder!!?

I’m not too fussed about upping the internal bitrate. I think the bitrate that Panasonic are using sounds plenty for an 8 bit 4:2:0 recording, especially if that HDMI output can be hacked.

    • Dugo

Plenty of cameras output video via HDMI (or SDI) in 4:2:2 subsampled chroma quality. For instance, the $2,000 Nikon D600 with a full-frame sensor. 4:2:2 out. Guaranteed. Just ask Nikon.

I called Panasonic in New Jersey to ask about just this, and was told that they do not have any more information than what is on their web site until late November or December. So, I would be resigned to 4:2:0 for now,. Which means that a hack might be a good idea, after all. Panasonic had a pretty good chance here w. the GH3, I just hope they didn’t blow it.

  • LA

I will donate $500 if they can get 4K working. I am in the “Entertainment Capital Of The World” i.e. Los Angeles…and really need a 4K camera.

    • homer

move out of LA and buy a 1080p camera

      • LA

1080P is for kiddies. This is LA. The big leagues. We are the big boys with big toys.

Move out of LA? B**** please.

Ever heard of the phrase “To Live and Die in LA”?

        • P4INKiller

Watch out guys, we’ve got a badass here.

        • His Royal Highness Me

If you were a big boy with a big toy, you’d be shooting on an Alexa and not whining about wanting the features of a $100,000 camera in a $1500 one. If you can’t make a film with what’s available now, you can’t make a film.

          • LA

I Have two of them, but need an back up camera with 4K like the alexa

        • homer

That comment alone tells me you dont know jack shit about film making

    • Dugo

Since tax rates in Los Angeles, California — a.k.a. “La-La-Land” — are probably about 400% the national U.S. average, I can sort of see why someone would really need 400% the Full-HD resolution over there just to break even and stay afloat. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out West, people, and then there is always the California Board of Equalization to make things just right.

  • John Caballero

A 3K hack would be good enough. 4k might be asking for too much.

  • What would make this the BEST HYBRID CAMERA is to have it FLASH when taking a photo while recording video…I use my GH2 for weddings but the photos inside need the flash …outside they are great!

  • freetibet

why not a 0,95, 1.4 lens and a Led light on top?

  • Garypen

Personally, I find it kinda pointless to start a hack wishlist when nobody knows for sure what the public release of the factory firmware will have.

Once that is known, then the shortcomings can be properly identified.

    • How dare you being reasonable?

    • Dugo

Bloody heck, why would you even need an actual camera to hack it? That’s arse-backward. Do the firmware hack first — then build a camera around it, yessirie!!

  • Jeremy

I agree. But i don’t think the 4:2:0 8 bit thing will be fixed.. I’d like to know how much
Freedom we’ll get with the picture profiles and if they’ll come off a log style pp? I also wanna know if the highlights still have that weird video milky “clipped” look, especially on skin tones.
I’m not sure what the hack could do, but this has one badass set of processing horsepower
Behind it so the options should be less hindered….. If the hack is even possible??

  • M

    Dear 4/3’s Admin:
Although there isn’t much news about cameras after Photokina, It would be wise not to instigate a complete lock out of the firmware so that we may continue improving the GH cameras. Whatever others do in their domains should be left to them since that is their specialty. Your blog is very good when it stays on topic with industry news and not fundraisers for a camera that has yet to finalize its own firmware. Thanks!

    • The Real Stig

Go do your own blog and let Admin include in his, what he wants to.

  • Anonymous

No race to hack a OMD. Oh, no reason…

  • agachart

good reason, vataliy do it! but fuck oly fanboy cannot do it,
OM-D is best of 5 Axis ,not for video go to hell i hate they talk about fucking 5 axis.

  • Ruslan

I suggest to call next hack Bush or Clinton or maybe Obama they are mass murders without doubts…

  • ha

is this the same bullshit LA when boys
    compare Sportscars on a startingline?

    is it?

    think you have nothing understood..seen…done

i am in L.A… and we take what we get.
And sometimes 120 GH-2 for one litte spot
    is less expensive than..but more…..
no ideas no cam will help

  • Anonymous

a hack that would eliminate the 29,59 min video recording limit from PAL versions

  • Anonymous

Well it doesn’t have Zebra Functions, nor a IRE Monitor… sooo… thats kind of important

  • nichimal

I would Love to use my iPad As a control Monitor While filming. I can use the iPad already As a Controller and Monitor with the Lumix app via wifi, but the Video Stream turns off while filming. would Be great, especially if One could also Focus with the iPad while filming….

  • william obrien

Focus Peaking!!!!!!! and more color depth and higher resolution video shooting

  • Morten Minothi Kristiansen

The timelimit is hi priority for me! I hope it can be hacked!

  • Bill Snyder

    Make NSTC/PAL selectable!
I do work around the world and need this option badly.
    Peaking would be nice.
HDMI and WIFI continuous output on Record.

  • hahaha

I would be very glad if the GH3 will make coffe(grained!300000iso) for me at 8:00 in the morning

  • off topic, I understand the popularity of the G3 for video, but is anyone working with the ZS series to derive RAW for stills? Is there another hack group out there. thanks for any input and or referrals..
