(FT5) E-M5III will be announced on October 17 and feature the “same” 20 MP sensor

Image on top shows the current E-M5II model

I now have learned that the E-M5III will be announced on October 17 and feature the “same” 20 MP sensor of the predecessor. Of course there will be a new processor that will improve the IQ. But it definitely sounds like this camera is going to be an incremental evolution of the current E-M5II model.

And unlike what reported by some the E-M5III has not a “surprise” new feature. Don’t trust those sites :)

E-M5III rumor summary:
Announcement on October 17 (99% certain)
Same E-M1II sensor with 121 cross-type phase detection pixels. (80% certain)
New processing engine (90% certain)
Lighter, more plasticky but still weather sealed body (60% certain)
Same BLS-50 battery of the PEN and E-M10 camera series (60% certain)

Olympus says they are developing a new 500mm MFT lens!

The Japanese website Newsswitch interviewed Shigemi Sugimoto from Olympus:

  • In 2018 we couldn’t launch new products  because of the factory relocation
  • The policy is now to announce multiple lenses every year from this year.
  • We will continue to launch cameras in three areas: entry, middle and high end level.
  • A super telephoto lens that reaches 1000mm in FF terms is under development, and it will reach 2000mm with a 2x teleconverter
  •  True value of MTF lies in scenes where mobility, image stabilization, and tripods cannot be used. It is possible to provide photos with a high degree of freedom that cannot be achieved by other companies.
  • E-M1X has introduced many of the world’s first technologies.
  • The PEN series has been highly acclaimed by women. The point is how to fight in the mature mirrorless market.
  • We are considering automating lens production. There are many areas that require high-precision work and are difficult to replace with robots. Combination with hand action is also difficult.

(FT2) Is this the new 41 Megapixel 8K sensor for the Panasonic GH6?

Androidlad posted  this supposed new 41 Megapixel 8K Micro Four Thirds sensor from Sony. I  checked the current Sony sensor database and cannot find that entry. Therefore I don’t know yet  if this is a the real deal. I surely hope it is because it’s a stunning sensor!

Yes I know this sensor application is marked within the “Surveillance”.But that’s something we saw with the GH5s sensor too which is also considered as “Surveillance” sensor :)

This new Sony sensor has a 41MP, records 8K, 120fps…an idea sensor for a future GH6 or E-M1III !!!

Panasonic promised to give us an 8K ready camera by 2022. And I guess there is a good chance to see a new 8K GH6 in late 2020 already…

(FT3) New E-M5III could use the BLS-50 battery from the PEN series

Image on top shows the current E-M5II model

I have been told that unlike the current E-M5II camera the soon to be announced new E-M5III will use the same BLS-50 battery of the PEN and E-M10 camera series

E-M5III rumor summary:
Announcement in late Summer (99% certain)
Same E-M1II sensor with 121 cross-type phase detection pixels. (60% certain)
New processing engine (90% certain)
Lighter, more plasticky but still weather sealed body (60% certain)
Same BLS-50 battery of the PEN and E-M10 camera series (60% certain)

(FT5) Panasonic is developing a new TOF Micro Four Thirds sensor for a new PERFECT autofocus system!

I got this from a reliable source:
Panasonic is working to on their ToF sensor from the Vivo Nex Dual phone to implement it on a new AF system in their MFT line!
But I am not sure when it will go live (gh6/7/8)
Time of Flight measures accurate distances to subjects, so tap on touchscreen for subject to focus on, get an almost instant ToF reading to distance, quickly move lens focus system to where it needs to be for that distance (no contrast “wobble”, no overshooting, pinpoint accurate video tracking focus, etc). In theory, it beats “hybrid” (ie PDAF + CDAF like in the Sony/Fuji) because it eliminates the need for any back and forward movements that are required by CDAF calculations! It also eliminates PDAF sensor banding that Sony cleverly hides (but Canon and Nikon haven’t mastered the cover up quite as well, it can be seen in shadow recovery). Panasonic will use MFT as testing and maturing grounds for new developments (ToF AF, organic sensors, etc), much like Olympus does for their MFT > medical devices ;)
This sounds like the holy grail of autofocus! No PDAF artifacts and superfast autofocus system!
