Continuous shooting test (via DSLRcamera).

Four Thirds User (Click here) tested the fps speed of the E-M5. The good news is that the E-M5 actually shoots 10fps instead of the indicated 9fps on all four tested cards: “Olympus also told us that IS would slow the shooting rate down, which it clearly didn’t. Curiously, two of the higher-specification cards, the Lexar Pro and Kingston XX Ultimate, although they shot 12 frames in the sequence, the last frame took twice as long to register as the previous one, so we excluded it, only counting the 11.”
This has to be a marketing trick from Olympus to get positive feedback from reviews ;) Thanks FourThirdsUser for sharing that interesting test!

Of course this is a pretty unfair comparison. We are comparing apple with oranges. Both cameras are different priced, have different specs, and different strengths. The [shoplink 29074]Olympus E-M5[/shoplink] is cheaper, has a faster AF, weather sealed body. The X PRO 1 has a super image quality and a very innovative hybrid viewfinder. But ultimately isn’t it interesting to see how great the image quality difference is? :)

Our reader Gabrielle Motola sent me the link (Click here) to a short test made with both cameras. Gabrielle explicitly says that is not a regular and scientific test. Her impression is that “this test clearly showed me is that both cameras are capable of providing an outstanding image. The choice of purchase comes down to preference and operational flow.”

Robin Wong (Click here) just published the third part of his Olympus E-M5 review. Part one can be found here and part two here. In this third part he tested the Macro Photography, the 5 axis stabilization, manual focusing with the electronic viewfinder and the handling of the camera.

I have to say that there is one point were I don’t agree with him. When he says that focus peaking from the NEX isn’t that impressing as many do say. I have to disagree. I extensively used the [shoplink 26379]NEX-5n[/shoplink] with the [shoplink 29666 ebay]Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4[/shoplink] manual focus lens and focus peaking is damn useful! I wish Olympus and Panasonic could add that feature via firmware upgrade soon.

A short test made by Four Thrids User (see video on top) shows that indeed Olympus managed to considerably reduce the rolling shutter video jello effect. The trick to archive that is easy…the E-M5 sensor and circuitry has a much faster readout that reduces the rolling shutter artifacts.

The definitive solution of the problem would be the use of a global shutter were the pixels aren’t read out line per line but all toegther at the same time. If early rumors are correct than the Panasonic GH3 may be the first camera with such a sensor! let’s cross the fingers!

BHphoto (Click here) just changed the availability date for the OM-5. It has been postponed to April 16th.

DPreview, Robin Wong and the E-M5 image quality:
Dpreview (Click here) just posted a low light high ISO samples. Robin Wong (Click here) posted his second part of the E-M5 review with a focus o the High ISO quality: “At ISO3200, the image actually looked very clean, and even up to ISO6400, the output is still acceptably good, on par, or possibly better than E-P3 at ISO1600. Hence, Olympus’ initial claims as they announced the E-M5 that it has at least two stops of EV advantage over E-P3 were not a joke at all.”
Robin is very positively impressed by the image quality but I hope to see soon more detailed studio tests done by Dpreview or DxOmark. The ISO tests made by Focus Numerique (Click here) showed us that the E-M5 and [shoplink 26836]GX1[/shoplink] differences in RAW are minimal. It’s the usual very good Olympus JPEG engine that makes the difference.
Ops now I am talking like a pixel peepers…back to real photography! I really don’t pay too much attention about small resolution, noise and dynamic range differences. What matters first is the usability of the camera. As some readers reported yesterday high image quality makes no sense if the autofocus on the camera won’t work appropriately (I am talking about you Fuji X PRO 1!). And in the real world the five AXIS IS from Olympus will probably help you to get real sharp images in situation were other cameras may blur away the resolution due the camera shaking. I write all this to remind you that no camera is perfect. What matters is which camera works really best for your real photographic use. That’s why I use the [shoplink 16254]GH2[/shoplink] for some of my video work, the [shoplink 28308 ebay]E-P1[/shoplink] as my “always wtih me” camera and the [shoplink 28309 ebay]Mamiya 7[/shoplink] for astonishing quality pictures which even overshadows the new 36 MPX Nikon D800 ;)

It’s time for a new Micro Four Thirds lens review roundup. As you can see from the screenshot on top DxOmark (Click here) tested the new Olympus 12-50mm weather sealed zoom. I have to say that I expected a better result form a lens that is 10 times longer than one of my favorite lenses, the [shoplink 25104]Panasonic 14-42mm X lens (which costs less too!)[/shoplink]. Of course if you need a weather sealed lens an a superior economy and control than the Olympus lens is the better choice.

A size comparison

We already had many hot new camera announcements this year. Not only the Olympus E-M5 but also the Nikon D800, Canon 5DmarkIII and the Fuji X PRO 1 and the new iPad (joke!). This isn’t bad for a year were most of us expect the hottest machines to be announced in September at the Photokina event. But the two cameras we care of are the E-M5 and the X PRO 1 because the Fuji is very likely the mirrorless camera wiht the highest image quality. Three people visted the Focus on Imaging show in Birmingham and reported this about the two cameras:

1) Adam: “I have had a play with an Oly E-M5 at focus on imaging in the UK. My feelings, as well as a number of the punters there were that the camera is tiny, I would go as far as much too small and that the EVF suffers from much too much blackout. OLY had a catwalk stand and after taking several shots of the models that were playing with ballons, (I know), it was almost impossible to get that decisive moment. Overall nice camera but a flawed execution, pity. The X-Pro 1 feels quite cheap in the hand and has the same awful focusing issues as the [shoplink 19929 ebay]X100[/shoplink].”

2) David from Soundimagesplus: “like the feel of a camera with a grip, and feel the handling is often much improved. The advantage with the OM-D is that its still pretty light with it attached. The two grip sections are actually quite small and adds little weight. There is some extra weight obviously from the battery. The whole thing in the hand is not unlike cameras like the Nikon FM2 ([shoplink 29562 ebay]here on eBay[/shoplink]) and Pentax MZ-5 ([shoplink 29563 ebay]here on eBay[/shoplink]), which is no higher complement in my book.” About the X PRO 1 he writes: “Like the X100, I’m disappointed with the finish. This is a £1400 body only camera after all. I have to say it, and I’m sure I’ll get lots of reaction to this, but I thought it looked and felt cheap. Somewhat like a compact camera on steroids. The one I was given to try looked like some of the finish on the top plate was peeling off.”

3) Rob (Click here to read his full comment): “Firstly the thumb grip is nice, but I felt it was awkward to reach the shutter button, because the neck strap holder poked out exactly in line with where your finger needs to go over to reach it. I don’t know if this is a design flaw, my finger being flawed or Olympus owners holding their cameras different to how I naturally do it. I did try it with the battery grip and that problem doesn’t count there though. Although I would have preferred a higher quality finish on the battery grip, especially as its a £230ish accessory. It just felt a bit plastic fantastic. That said the ergonomics of it with the portrait grip in place was much better than I was expecting. The Fuji I didn’t like at all. It certainly felt quality, but the focusing really is unimpressive (slower than the NEX, especially now that’s had a firmware tweek). But I felt it was pushing the retro thing too far, there was no need for it to be designed the way i was. EVF was not impressive, don’t think I would use it much with optical available on it. I also felt it was heavier than it needed to be /should have been.”

Summary: I am surprised to hear that apparently the feeling on the X PRO 1 is “cheap”. I really have to test this for myself as I really expected the Fuji to be of high quality! Thanks to both Adam and David!

An E-M5 news: Damian McGillicuddy (Click here) is testing the E-M5 and shooting some interesting studio portraits: “It does amaze me what the diminutive sensor is capable of but even more so the blinkered bigotry of some larger size sensor owners!  These are tools to do a job and surely as long as its capable of what its asked to do, which it is, then that’s all that matters…”
