Dpreview tested the Panasonic G9’s high-res mode

Dpreview tested the new G9 High Resolution shooting mode. They tested it with moving object in the frame to see what kind of “artifacts” you get

As with similar technologies from Ricoh and Olympus, it’s not necessarily recommended for scenes with moving subjects in them. But we wanted to see if we could make it work.
We overall found that a shutter speed between 1/4 sec and 1/8 sec gave a reasonably natural look to the average pedestrian in motion – of course, for faster and slower moving objects, you’ll have to adjust accordingly. Do take note, though, that there are some interesting colorful streaks in our moving subjects, and a reduction of resolution in static objects that can be seen behind them.

And Photobyrichard.com added new sections to his very long G9 review.

Panasonic 200mm lens test by Imaging Resource: “Superb Image Quality”

Imaging Resource tested the new Leica 200mm lens:

“The image quality thus far from this lens has proven superb, as have the images with the 560mm eq. 1.4x teleconverter engaged, and I look forward to seeing our forthcoming lab results. This lens represents mobility combined with versatility, and I personally find that combination tempting indeed. To be sure, this is a nice lens and a versatile package given the included 1.4x teleconverter.”

G9 better than the GH5 for less money? Has world’s fastest AF, new JPG engine, 6.5 stop stabilization and more!

The Panasonic G9 has many more innovations than previous photo oriented Panasonic cameras. I will list the most iomportant ones here (text mostly via Dpreview):

New JPEG engine:

We were pretty happy with JPEGs from the GH5, but the improvements in the G9 are obvious. Organic textures are rendered more naturally, and images taken at medium / high ISO sensitivities look better, thanks to more intelligent noise reduction.

Improved autofocus in video:

the G9’s autofocus in video mode seems much improved over previous models and less prone to ‘hunting’. In the words of our very own technical editor Rishi Sanyal, this makes autofocus in video mode ‘usable’.

High Resolution mode:

80MP high-resolution shot mode (with JPEG and Raw output) which works by shifting the 20MP sensor by half-pixel increments, eight times – and then combining the exposures into a single, high-resolution image.

IS:

The G9 has a 1 stop improved image stabilization up to 6.5 stops

World’s fastest autofocus

DFD technology achieves the world’s fastest AF speed of 0.04 sec.

It beass the GH5 in nearly all aspects except video. And even in that case it is surprisingly close with 4k 60fps at 15Mbps. I know some people here complained about the price. But if you think through this rationally you will see the G9 is a better GH5 (excpet video) for less money!

Focus on the new Leica 200mm f/2.8 lens

Panasonic-Leica 200mm lens at BHphoto. Amazon. Adorama. Press text on 43rumors.

The new 200mm f/2.8 lens is an expensive but still interesting new proposition. It’s very compact and light. And the 1.4x teleconverter is included for free. Damien Demolder:

Image quality doesn’t appear to dip even when the DMW-TC14 1.4x teleconverter is mounted between the lens and the body, and again used wide open the results are crystal-clean and detailed. I had expected some degradation in sharpness, but there appears to be none – it is very impressive.

Olympus 45mm f/1.2 review by Robin Wong: “best of the best that Micro Four Thirds can offer”

The new 45mm f/1.2. Image courtesy: Robin Wong

Robin Wong posted the full Olympus 45mm f/1.2 review:

The F1.2 wide aperture, combined with medium telephoto focal length produced the shallow depth of field needed to isolate the subjects from the messy background. The bokeh is smooth and beautiful, allowing the subjects in focus to stand out.
I have nothing negative to write about the Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm F1.2 PRO lens. While some may complain about the bigger size, I find it reasonable and I would not have a smaller lens with compromises made on the excellent optical quality.
If you are after the best of the best that Micro Four Thirds can offer, the Olympus 45mm F1.2 is a lens that you should seriously consider.
