Kai-Duc:Just wanted to share with you my latest wedding video created in Chicago with Panasonic GH4 / GH3 / GH2 & G6 cameras, so your audience can see how a real event can be covered in a cinematic fashion using all these cameras at once. There are a few aerial shots using a GoPro Hero3 + DJI Phantom quadcopter & a couple 5D mark III shots if you can spot them – everything else is pure m43 with manfrotto tripod, slider, and steadicam merlin. Lenses used are Pana 12-35 X F2.8 / 20 F1.7, SLR Magic 25 0.95, Canon FD 50 F1.4 & 55 F1.2 with RJ Lens turbo, Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50 2.8, Helios 44-2 58mm F2, Olympus 9 – 18.

Karsten:Even if I own both GH4 and E-M1 I often prefer the Olympus in taking pictures. GH4 is a great movie cam, but I love the colours of the E-M1 pictures. And the following link may help to reduce some prejudices against mFT: There isn´t any chance to play with DOF? And mFT will fail in lowlight situations? Of course not!

July mirrorless camera shipment still growing (slowly).

The Japanese organization CIPA posted the camera worldwide shipment data for July. There is little to tell here. The good thing is that mirrorless is till growing although a bit slowly. But this is good news if you consider the system camera market as a whole is actually shrinking during 2014.

SLR Magic announces the HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 and SLR Magic 77 ND 0.4-ND 1.8 filter

SLRmagic just annnounced the new 10mm T/2.1 Cine Micro Four Thirds lens and the new 77 ND 0.4-ND 1.8 filter. Here is the official press text:

NEW: THE SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 and SLR Magic 77 ND 0.4-ND 1.8 filter
SLR Magic expands its micro four thirds lineup with new wide angle lens

Hong Kong, China (September 3, 2014)  – SLR Magic expands the micro four thirds lens lineup with the new SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 wide angle lens. With this latest addition, the portfolio of lenses for the micro four thirds system is now comprised of thirteen focal lengths. The product will be officially introduced during upcoming Photokina 2014 fair in Cologne.

The field of view of this new HyperPrime Lens corresponds to a 20mm lens in 35mm format and this fast wide angle of view opens up many new creative composition opportunities, particularly in the fields of interior, architectural and landscape cinematography and photography. Additionally, a fast max aperture of T2.1 makes the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 ideal for available-light photography.

We place our highest priority in the development on our lenses to fulfill the demands of professional cinematographers and photographers. The design and build of the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 is solid and reliable.

The SLR Magic 77 ND 0.4-ND 1.8 filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1.3 to 6 stops. The 0.4 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring via the non-removable lever. By slowing your exposure time you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Both filter substrates are combined into one filter ring, this filter is low profile and helps to eliminate vignetting on most lenses. The front filter ring diameter is 86mm in diameter, further helping to reduce vignetting, on wide angles lenses such as the SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 lens.

The SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 (MSRP: $799 US) and SLR Magic 77 ND 0.4-ND 1.8 filter (MSRP: $179 US) will be available from authorized SLR Magic dealers starting end of October 2014.

The SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 10mm T2.1 will be first presented at Photokina 2014 fair. The SLR Magic stand would be in (No. L-011, Hall 5.1) during the fairs which are to be held in Cologne from 16th to 21st of September 2014. For all those who want to visit Photokina 2014 fairs.

SLR Magic is currently looking for volunteers to test this lens at a special price. If interested:

Possible issue on the E-M1 and E-M5 with the new Metabones Canon EF adapter.

Our reader Brian sent us this mail to warn about a possible issue with the new Metabones Canon EF adapter:

FedEx delivered today the Metabones Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster, P/N MB_SPEF-m43-BM1, that I had ordered after reading your posting as to its availability.  I have test fit the adapter to all MFT cameras I own, and I wanted to alert you to the fact that it DOES NOT FIT the Olympus OM-D E-M1 camera.  It’s not even close.  The adapter interferes with the forward projecting EVF hood on the E-M1. The adapter also does not fit the Olympus E-M5, although the interference is not as severe.  The adapter will fit the Olympus E-M10, although the adapter remains in contact with the EVF hood.  I don’t know yet if this tension prevents the lens flange from seating flat. If so, this could cause lens decentering.
The adapter does fit fine on Olympus PEN Mini E-PM2, and Panasonic Lumix models G5, G6, GX1, & GF5.  I mounted a Canon EF-S compatible Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR LD Asperical (IF) zoom lens on the adapter, and made some test shots with the E-PM2 camera. Result is a 12-35mm f/2.0 zoom lens. Sweet!  This Tamron version lacks IS, but that isn’t a problem on Olympus bodies.
I am a bit surprised that Metabones did not engineer the adapter to fit more camera models, especially the popular E-M5 and E-M1.

Hope Metabones will release a statement about this soon!

Olympus kills grey market by dropping the worldwide warranty!

With a plain simple press text Olympus officially announced the termination of the global warranty program. This is going to affect all buyers that will buy Olympus stuff from abroad. This is likely going to affect seriously the large grey market. This is the official press text:

“Olympus Imaging Corporation has been providing Worldwide warranty for digital cameras and accessories since April 1, 2004, except for some countries and regions.
However, the time has come to stop providing Worldwide warranty because of regulation by laws and differences in the infrastructure of the repair facilities in individual countries.
Please kindly be informed that Worldwide warranty will not be provided with most of our Micro Four Thirds System and compact digital camera products shipped after September of 2014.

The Worldwide warranty card you have, is currently still valid as long as it meets the conditions required for warranty repair. Also, the Worldwide warranty card enclosed with the new products which you purchase from now, is also valid. Local warranty card is valid only in the country where you purchase the product and all repairs undertaken in other countries will be a chargeable service.

For any questions please refer to the “Olympus Authorized Distributor List” and contact our Service Station or Distributor for assistance.”
