64MP Poco X3 vs 16MP Olympus E-PL7 – Does Pixel Count Matter?

Robin Wong:

Many people kept saying camera manufacturers should learn from smartphone technologies, especially when it comes to AI, computational processing and HDR innovation. I disagree. I still believe that smartphone manufacturers have a lot more to improve and should learn a thing or two from real camera makers on how to fully optimize image processing without compromising pixel integrity. In this video I explore what a 64MP image sensor in a latest smartphone from Xiaomi’s Poco can do, versus an old entry level Olympus PEN E-PL7 with a kit lens, with merely a 16MP image sensor. Does megapixel count really matter? Does computational photography make all the difference? Is camera manufacturer really falling behind when it comes to delivering ultimate image quality? I explore all these in multiple shooting scenarios, from good light to low light, harsh dynamic range environment as well as close up, or shooting subjects from far. I also discuss how camera manufacturers can improve their camera performance.
