Those Adorama prices aren’t deals at all!
G1 body only is now $400.
20mm lens alone: $400. Adorama price for both: $800. Same!
14mm lens alone: $400 at Adorama, from $348 at Amazon. Adorama price for both: $800. Same or higher than separately.
    7-14mm: $1000. Adorama price for both: $1500. $100 higher!
45mm alone: $750 elsewhere, $800 at Adorama. Price for both: $1300. $100 more!!

    C’mon, that’s just insulting!

Jon I rechecked and you are completey correct! That’s a joke of a deal on Adorama. I removed it. I posted it becuase I thought you had to take off $100 from the price written in RED. But As you mentioned the price in RED is already discounted. Damn.

any additional news about the wide angle lens roadmap for the next year or two? when do you think the 12mm prime or the 12-50 will come? the 9-18 or 7-14 photo quality seems to be excellent but the cost is eye popping. im so salty im considering just getting an lx5 instead of the lens…

anyone with a gf1 and the 9-18mm miss having OIS?

    • Michael Meissner

In terms of missing OIS with the 9-18mm, using the usual formula where you tend to need stabilization to overcome camera shake if the shutter speed is slower than the reciprocal of the 35mm equivalent focal length, or 1/18 for shooting at 9mm, and 1/36 for shooting at 18mm.

Generally, I would imagine that you would want to shoot moving humans at a faster shutter speed, so it wouldn’t be an issue for shots with people in it. If you shoot waterfalls at slow speed yeah you might want speeds that low, but with scenic type shots the subject doesn’t move that much and you can arrange to stabilize the camera. So while you might occasionally want stabilization for a wide angle lens, I suspect you need it much more often for a telephoto lens where you might want to shoot at 1/60 or 1/125 instead of 1/300 (for the 40-150mm or 14-150mm) or 1/400 (for the 45-200mm).

  • I bit the bullet and got the 35-100mm when I saw the price (before I saw it here!) I have yet to use it for anything real, but soon, soon…

  • Neonart

Same here. 35-100 on a truck headed in my dirrection. That’s $700 off list with a 3mo warr. Not bad.
