Third part of the Zacuto shootout (with GH2)

Share

The second part of the Zacuto shootout (the one with Coppola voting for the GH2) created quite a buzz and there is a must read article written by Art Adams on ProVideoCoalition. Zacuto now made a more equilibrate shootout you can watch here: http://www.zacuto.com/shootout-revenge-2012/revenge-of-the-great-camera-shootout-part-three

Meanwhile the GH2 is getting cheaper and cheaper right before the GH3 announcement: Amazon, Olympus US store, Adorama, B&H, eBay.

P.S.: a reader sent me this: “Check out this short film shot w/ the GH2. The color grading and overlook is insane! Could pass for a higher end camera, for sure: vimeo

Hey Ale, you keep writing “Meantime blah blah..”

What you actually mean is “Meanwhile, blah blah” :)

It’s either “Meanwhile” or “In the meantime”, never just “Meantime”. Just thought I’d point it out since you write this every other post. And yes, I am very anal for pointing it out. Sorry about that.

      thx! Corrected (and lesson learned!)

I’m shocked at the offense caused by “meantime” when we have an attempt to use “equilibrate” (a verb) as an adjective. (I’m assuming “balanced” was the intended meaning.)

that “Art Adams on ProVideoCoalition” link you posted is really good and shows why part 2 was flawed …

GH2 isn’t just as “good” as more expensive video cameras.

    • CobyD

It’s NOT flawed. It is what it is, and Zacuto was up front with their intentions and methods. What’s flawed is the way it was interpreted/spun by some people … But frankly I don’t really care what OTHER people took from it. I thought it was interesting.

  • > Zacuto shootout

All cameras cheat on colors and exposures. It appears that expensive cameras cheat more.

This is rather appalling: the expensive cameras can’t reproduce dark room corner or burned out colors!

This is not great DR or HDR or whatever, this is plainly unnatural looking footage.

  • I didn’t like that link…the guy had no idea what zacuto was hoping to accomplish, which is odd considering he has probably worked a long time in the industry.

I wonder why the GH2’s severely blown highlights were not a major issue to be pointed out in the shootout. The window shot and the table lamp in the wall shot looked atrocious to me. But I’m not a videographer so maybe I’m getting something wrong concerning video priorities. Just surprised.

BTW the “creative” shot looked much better to me with the GH2 and, to little surprise, it’s made with a stronger ND filter than the regular shots.

The shootout itself was a work of art for sure :)

Because real PROs expose for skin tones. Everything else is secondary.

I wonder why zacuto did not put the AG-AF in test? What people forget in the race for the best picture in video or movie is the intention of creating great cinematic pictures that rely on how the DOP/Cinematographer orchestrating all that needed in camera and lighting. Hence even when using natural light they will use all help they can to bend the lighting the way they need it. In the GH2 case they must know the camera limitation and arrange the light according it. That’s way in zacuto test part 2 even Copola choose the GH2 it’s not entirely due to the GH2 performance but more due to the people that use it.
