Short break from MFT news to talk about a curious new Olympus camera: The probably most innovative new product announced yesterday is the Olympus SP-100 (spec and price here at Amazon). And what’s so special with it? It has a 50x zoom (24-1200mm) and it also has a never seen Eagle-Eye gun sight feature! Just check the video below to learn more about it:

Quite cool!

Why don´t we have 60p full hd in m43 olympus cameras?

    • Ranger 9

And why won’t Scotch Tape fix the bottle of Scotch I broke?

    • Arnaud

Was asking myself the same question when I saw the video

    • yvess

perhaps sony has forbidden it, like the focus peaking, lets hope that the TRUE EM-5 successor has 1080p60. Now that 4k is on the horizon sony should allow this….

    • +1. I own the E-P5 and love it. But the video is pretty dismal when compared to my GH3 or even my RX100 II. I probably won’t buy another Olympus until video quality is at least on par with the RX100 II (I love Olympus color for stills and 5-axis IBS, so I am not expecting GH3 levels of video quality). After size and price, the promise of mirrorless cameras is hybrid imaging. Olympus needs to up their game on the video front to hold up the third leg in mirrorless cameras, or the tripod falls down.

    • Beautemps

Sony will let Olympus implement 60p video as soon as they have integrated 5-Axis stabilizer. Cause 5-axis + 60p will be a killer cam.

    • jim

Dam Olympus – you just teasing us…

Now pop this in the EM5 and I’ll get 2!

    • io

60fps would very nice, since converting from 60fps to 24fps is easy, and it will also allow slow-mo…

  • A built-in red dot sight. Cool.
I got one for my GH2’s hotshoe and it works pretty well.

Better rush in for that sight you linked, because you get a “Free Romantic Rose Gift” but only while stocks last.

“It is the worlds biggest superzoom”? In what way? The Panny FZ70 has a 60x zoom (20-1200mm)and Fuji’s HS50 is a monster by dimensions & weight. I do like the idea of a gun site but wish there was a way that the image from the site could be reproduced in the viewfinder.

The best product from yesterday was the grip for the E-M10. How about developing one for the E-M5?

And admin, please, please, please move the “submit comment” link BELOW the Captcha section. Thanks!

    • EcoR1

Because the camera looks big and heavy. That way?

    • Beautemps

      +1000 put that button below

  • That red dot sight isn’t that useful. I suppose the most innovative announcement yesterday was the 9mm body cap lens. You can buy four of those for the price of one SP-100.

  • Hubertus Bigend

I’d actually would like to have a closer look at that camera, if it was able to shoot RAW images, but it isn’t. Why do they finally create an advanced and decent-looking superzoom camera, but “forget” the RAW option? I don’t get it.

  • Justin

Such a strange shooting demographic they’re going after with this ad. Casual birders who think they are hot stuff?

    • Ross

Maybe it’s like having a fake cigarette for smokers giving it up & this is for shooters trying to give up the gun (when pointing it at protected wildlife). 😉

  • Hans van Veluwen

The Canon PowerShot SX50 HS released in 2012 also has a 24-1200mm (50x) lens.

  • Justin

    How about a real birding lens to compliment the EM-1? 300 f/2.8 or 4.0? 400 f/4 or 5.6 anyone?

    • There is a very nice 300/2.8 for 4/3 mount. Sure, its big and expensive, but both are going to be true for any 300/2.8.

      • Justin

Neat lens. But want something half the size and better than half the price. I remember when I had my 40D in 2008 and was eying the Canon 500 f4 IS. It was $5500. The price of glass has skyrocketed in recent years.

        • jim

          mmmm could get the 43 150mm F2 and a 1.4x or 2x TC!

          • jim

            or the 43 90-250mm F2.8 (and a TC?)
            or the 43 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 (and a TC?)

all good lenses – all ideal for EM1 – all very expencive 😀

    • Marck

      +100000000!

  • Berneck

I saw this commercial the other day. I’m not sure what it really does, or how it does it. Seems intriguing.

  • Dan Smith

Does anyone care what I would like?

Here’s what I would like. I would like a micro 4/3 lens like the 14-140 with higher image quality, and if it does not get much bigger, another f stop. If it does get much bigger, same f stop, but make it higher quality.

If they can’t do that, how about a 28-200 lens about the same size as the 14-140? Maybe even with higher quality?

    Thank you.

  • anonymous

not sure I agree with your wording – but yeah – I would love to see some more emphasis on superzooms or “extended range” zooms such as 12-60.

the 12-50 is soso, the 12-40 is too limited range.

I have both the Oly 14-150 and Pany 14-140(v2) – but would still love something optically better (I know it can’t be perfect)
I want a decent single zoom with a very versatile range – from wideangle to medium tele. I’m willing to have less range but not as little as 12-40.

Surely there is room for something in between the existing options?

  • jon

I must be very old school. I was amazed with my tamron 35-70 zoom for my om-1. it was even F3.5, fantastic, but a lot of glass weight. The engineering and physics to get a 12-40 2.8 at the resolution that olympus gets is truly outstanding. Add the brilliance of the M4/3 system to produce quality glass at the weight they do leaves me shaking my head at all the “what they need to do is” comments. on top of all that a thousand dollar lens is about equal to a 200 dollars in 1975, nothing of this quality could be had at that price. When Olympus comes out with their 40-150 2.8, what late fall?, the joy of having a 35mm equivalent
24-300 2.8 weather sealed lens set up only requiring one lens change. Ones happiness in life is perspectives. Share the joy of the engineers that envisioned what we can hold in our hands now and go out and shot and feel the pleasures and joy of what amazing tools we have in our hands. I is only a tool the artistry comes from our joy.

Someone should make the “Dot Sight” Hot shoe accessory!
    Attachable to other cameras…
    I’ll buy it for $20

  • Al

Looks good. Nice chunky grip. Modern. If only the E-M10 would have looked like that.
