* TIFF images (after conversion from raw) from the OMD have a better signal to noise ratio than those from the Fujifilm X Pro 1, Panasonic GX1, Sony NEX-7 and Olympus E-P3, showing that the camera copes well with noise.
– strangely, several others fare better for jpg images
* TIFF images (after conversion from raw) have a high dynamic range across the sensitivity range, with the OM-D achieving the highest result we’ve seen for any compact system camera. The chart shows that compared against the E-P3 the E-M5 is achieving at least 3EV greater dynamic range across all sensitivities.
– for jpg images, the E-M5 gets the best score of all except for a narrow band around ISO 1600.

2 years ago |This goes to show that Oly made too many EPL1, but they weren’t able to sell them. Now they are just clearing the stocks, probably at a negative cost. At least I am sure they aren’t making any profit at that price.

2 years ago |I don’t have any m43 system yet. I’m user of an entry level DSLR, wich my wife is afraid to handle.
I’ll wait for the omdem5 to lower its price or next model at the end of the year.
But I think its a good oportunity for replace my wife’s P&S with one of this and start a collection of good lenses.
Do you recomend -for my wife- E-PM1 with 14-42 II or E-P2 with 14-42 (first version)?

2 years ago |The EPM1 is less threatening and with the 14-42 II focuses MUCH faster than an E-P2. It’s also incredibly small and has a small addon flash. No contest.

2 years ago |Note, the E-P2 and E-P1 don’t have a flash builtin. The E-PM1 has a clip-on flash that comes in the box (so for the novice, just clip on the flash, and keep it on). The E-PM1 also is 2-3 generations newer than the E-P2, In a nutshell the Pen generations are:
1: E-P1 — the original. Does not have have the accessory port the others support, so the add-on viewfinder is not an option. No flash. Two control wheels. Has orientation sensor including level display.
2: E-P2 — the second pen. It adds the accessory port, but still no flash included in the box. For its time, it was billed as the high end camera. Two control wheels. Has orientation sensor, including level display.
3: E-PL1 — First camera more targeted at a lower end. It has a pop-up flash that can be bent to be a weak bounce flash. It does not have control wheels, you change settings but pushing buttons. No orientation sensor. Only Pen that does not support a wired shutter release. Evidently Olympus produced way too many of these, hence the firesale going on now.
4: E-PL2 — Meant to be a middle camera, between E-PL1 and E-P2. Has one control wheel. Comes with the 2nd generation 14-42mm lens, which focuses faster than the first generation lens. Has pop-up flash that can be bent to be a weak bounce flash. Does seem to have one issue that affects people — shooting into the light like sunsets can have red dots in the image. No orientation sensor. Has 2nd generation accessory port to allow use of new bluetooth device (penpal).
5: E-PM1 — New low end replacement for E-PL1. Fewer buttons and customizations. Has clip-on flash in box. New movie support allows for recording of videos up to 29 minutes. No orientation sensor. One control wheel.
6: E-PL3 — New middle end replacement for E-PL2. Has tilt screen. Has clip-on flash in box. New movie support. No orientation sensor. One control wheel.
7: E-P3 — New high end replacement for E-P2. Has two control wheels. Has pop-up flash (but can’t be used as a bounce flash). Has touch screen support (indicate focus point by touch for instance). Has orientation sensor. Has thicker grip that is removable, and an add-on grip to make it even thicker. No tilt screen.
8: E-M5 — New line of cameras, not a Pen, but OM-D. Weather sealed with appropriate lenses. New image stabilization. Two control wheels. Orientation sensor. Weather sealed clip-on flash. Built in electronic viewfinder, with eye sensor to enable automatic switching to EVF. Bigger, due to the builtin viewfinder. Much more customization. Add-on portrait and landscape grips that provide 2nd battery and A/C support. First 16MP sensor. Many more goodies. Just started shipping. Different battery than previous Pens. Has touch screen.

I have one more question.
I’m thinking going for O-MD EM-5 or next successor in 8 to 10 months from now.
But I can invest in a good prime up to $400.
I have in mind this lenses for family reunions, portraits and landscapes:
-20mm f1.7
-45mm f1.8
-12mm F2.0 is still overpriced IMO.
I listen to suggestions beyond this list.

I am surprised that I enjoy using the VF2 more than the E3 Evf.

2 years ago |Comments like “they evidently produced way too many EPl1′s” are a little wide of the mark, I reckon. It looks as though, having tooled up to make them they continued to churn them out at low margin, safe in the knowledge they wouldn’t cannibalize the sales of the new models (there’s enough of a step up to justify the cost if you have the spare cash) but it would help to build market share and act as an entry point to the system. I expect them to continue doing this, maybe with the EPm1 next as it makes perfect business sense.

2 years ago |I was told several months ago by an Olympus representative that they had produced more E-PL1′s than they could sell, and Olympus was preparing to sell them to get rid of them. Now, the representative wasn’t speaking officially, but it certainly seems to be the case. I would expect that the $149 is under the cost to actually make the camera, but since they’ve already been made, it is a matter of getting back some amount of sunk capital.
In the last ten years of watching Olympus, I have come to the conclusion that in general, Olympus does a batch production of cameras, and then goes on to the next model. Sometimes Olympus guesses wrong, and produces too few cameras, and sometimes they produce too many. I’ve seen several of these firesales over the years, including the C-2100UZ I picked up 10 years ago for about 1/2 price. There was the E-1 firesale several years ago. If you don’t need the latest bells and whistles, it can be a great way to pick up trailing edge tech.
