Panasonic-Leica 25mm gets reviewed by SLRgear!
There is a new full Panasonic-Leica review at SLRgear (Click here): “Panasonic has done very well with this lens. The only objectionable thing about it might be its price tag, which strikes a bit high for what some might see as the micro four-thirds equivalent of the nifty fifty. However, its fast aperture and high quality justify a higher price, and given the current lack of competition in its class, you’re just going to have to pay a premium price if you want what it can offer. That said, it’s well worth the investment.”
The lens is already in Stock in asian stores (like Amazon Japan) and should be in Stock soon oin the rest of the world. Check the preorder status at Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay! Click on shop names to visit the search page (Some websites may not do list the lens!).

If you have nothing to say, please shut up!
On the lens subject it puts up quite a show even though it’s soft in the corners when wide open.

25mm lens match 20mm at wide open and then leave the later in dust when stopped down
Mike
10 months ago |Hm, I can’t see a real difference in Sharpness independ from aperture. Chroma is better for the 20mm (although there shouldn’t be correction for both on the E-P1), but vignetting is better for the PL 25mm. So I think it depends on personal liking and size of the money bag.

The 25mm m4/3 does quite well. It doesn’t look like they’ve tested the 4/3 25, but I still don’t think any lens can top the Oly 50 f2 (my fav) in sharpness: http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/35/cat/14
I hope Oly can deliver that level of glass design in the next 50 macro…
Bruce
10 months ago |But the olympus 50mm isnt a micro 4/3 lens. You would need an adapter, wouldnt you?
I ‘m just saying

Another good review for the 25mm!

10 months ago |@Bruce
Yeah, adapting that to a m4/3s would not be ideal, which is why I hope Oly re-makes that lens in m4/3.
@Mr. Reeee
Of course the focal length is way different. I was just pointing out, that the best resolving m4/3 lens is not quite as great as the veteran 50 f2 (or how about the 150 f2!), but still an awesome lens.
I have the 50 f2, and the 25 f1.4 in 4/3s and LOVE both those lenses. It’s very encouraging to see the 25 come to m4/3s.

Frankly, I just need one of the two and I could use some superior optics…

10 months ago |I wish to somebody compare the “new” 25 Leica DG summilux F1.4 m4/3 with the “old ” 4/3 Leica D summilux 25mm F1.4 both center and corner sharpness , bokeh and shutter speed value at the same ISO and aperture. Because the old one has biger glass.
I’ve tried the Zeiss zf2 50 F 1.4 vs Zeiss macro planar zf2 F2.0 – shot @ F 2 same aperture and ISO but the 50 F1.4 give faster shutter speed,.. I don’t know why maybe the macro planar has the smaler glass.
If anybody have both glass Leica 4/3 & m4/3 please let me know,.. I really apreciate

10 months ago |hey …I own a 20mm f/1.7. I just looked at and compared SLRgears test shots of both lenses…wide open and at f/8. ( I looked at their shots with all of the wine bottles and the yarn, etc.). With both lenses wide open ..guess what…the 20mm wins…across the frame. OK…f/1.7 vs. f/1.4…(you get slightly shallower DOF from the Leica..but you pay in sharpness)..but at the price for the new 25…I am sticking with my 20mm. The 25mm wins at f/8 on the edges..but not by much..and the centers of the frames are even to my eye. The 20mm is MUCH smaller…so I just can’t see justifying this lens with the 20mm available for so much less $$$$. The 20mm is a great lens..and at its current price and size …its a no-contest for me. …The new 25mm has its assets tho…and is a welcome quality lens to the MFT quiver.

10 months ago |Yes, I agree. I don’t know how they measure the sharpness in their chart, but to the naked eye the 20mm looks quite sharper wide open (especially in the corner).
For the size and price, I do think the 20mm is still a better alternative.
deniz
10 months ago |i dont see a sharpness leap with this lens over the 20mm either.
but the bokeh looks much smoother in the samples. 20mm is kind of harsh on the bokeh.
Bob B.
10 months ago |yeah…the bokeh should be a LOT better with the Leica..f1.4 vs. f/1.7 and a slight focal length increase for the Leica…all add up to that!!!! I do not know if there is a difference in the shape of the aperture openings on each lens (i.e. more or less blades).

10 months ago |Bob, I don’t think you are understanding their blur test. The 25mm is much sharper wide open except in the corners.
Bob B.
10 months ago |no…I understand the blur test..but if you look at SLRgears own test photos from each lens, actually compare them side by side…the only place I see a slight edge is on the edges of the image at f/8.
And the difference in the real world with this sensor..is “slight”. Certainly not enough to make one discard a file. The photo would certainly still stand up from either lens.
Bob B.
10 months ago |In the 25mm f1.4 vs 20mm f1.7…photos @ SLRgear… look at the yarns… the 20mm images are sharper and have as much or more contrast than the 25mm @ f/.14. The blur chart shows otherwise…but open two window and compare their actual test photos. The 20mm wins.

10 months ago |I don’t think they control for focus position in the studio shots like they do with the blur tests. The blur tests should represent the “guaranteed-not-to-exceed” numbers, when focus is perfect.

10 months ago |Real world the 20mm f/1.7 is sharper wide open……the proof is in da puddin…nuff said.

10 months ago |hey guys, big time lurker but now joining the m4/3 team. i have recently ordered both the 20mm 1.7 & 25mm 1.4 as both would serve different purposes. 20mm for an ultra compact setup and larger fov, while the 25mm appears to have greater contrast, colors, and dof. not sure if this is a lens that competes with the 20mm but rather compliments it? thoughts?

10 months ago |Results look great!
It even beats the 50mm F2 Oly in sharpness!!
I wonder how it compares to the new oly m4/3 lenses.
Jason
10 months ago |It does not beat the 50mm f/2.0…. I own all three lenses and can assure you the the 50 mm f2.0 easily beats the 20 mm and 25 mm in sharpness – not even a contest.

10 months ago |Sharpness is not the only aspect of a lens that’s important, although that looks to be exceptional on the new 25/1.4. My Leica 45/2.8 macro produces more nuanced and pleasing colors than the pancake and I’m hoping that the 25/1.4 will follow suit. Any improvements in AF speed over the 20/1.7 pancake will also be welcome. The pancake is a good lens, but not the fastest to focus.

10 months ago |Good news! I compared the 25mm, 12mm and 20mm: 12 and 25 mm are doing exceptionally well in the sharpness department. I just had my first 100 exposures with the 12mm. Wather was poor, very little light, but results are very promissing in real world photo. It delivers on another level compared to the Olympus 9 – 18mm.
I will keep the 20 mm – it is still very good and compact. I will buy the 25mm too. There is a clear difference in perspective between them.
Finally: Also take a look at the cheap m4/3 Olympus 40 – 150 on SLR gear! It does very well in the sharpness department, 40 – 100mm. At 4 and 5.6 on par with 12 and 25mm. But of cource there are other weaknesses with this lens – it need fine weather to shine and CA is sometimes a problem. But look at the price!

5 months ago |Apart from the faster autofocus and the slightly longer focal length, I don’t see any reason to choose the larger, more expensive and heavier 25mm f/1.4 lens over the 20mm f/1.7. Sharpness and contrast of the 20mm are excellent. What more do you need? Pixel peepers!
Pixie
3 months ago |Pixel peeper or not, both lenses are stellar! However, I’m not prepared to pay 200 euro extra for the 25mm f/1.4. The 20mm field of view is significantly wider and therefore a little more versatile. You can always crop the image (16 megapixels are enough for me to do that).
