Panasonic GX1 preview at Cameralabs, LL and DC.watch
Panasonic Lumix GX1 preview – interview from Gordon Laing on Vimeo.
There is a new GX1 preview at Cameralabs (Click here): “The Lumix GX1 is a perfect illustration of a company listening to its customers. Many enthusiasts were perfectly happy with the physical side of the original GF1, but lamented the decision to dumb it down on subsequent generations. Why did they need to switch to the bigger form factors of the G3 and GH2 to enjoy the latest sensor and features? How about a premium GF model which satisfied the desires of enthusiasts while remaining as pocketable as possible?”
Luminous Landscape (Click here) posted a GX1 preview: “So, at this point what I can say about the upcoming (December, 2011) GX1 is that when it comes to just about everything that I can test, the camera looks like a winner for Panasonic. If image quality turns out to be comparable or even slightly better than the G3 from this past summer, and there’s no reason to doubt that it will not, then there are bound to be a lot of GX1 cameras and X lenses in some folks Christmas stockings this season.”
Also DC.watch (Click here) posted a first GX1 preview. And a GF1/GF3 versus GX1 size comaprison on Flickr.

Lol , they listen to the customer blaming the new model didn’t have a build in EVF…
P.S.: I like the GX1 without EVF

7 months ago |I think in a way they addressed what customers were asking for, a successor for the GF1 and that’s what you got.
Which is different from people asking for more since Sony announced the NEX-7 and that’s what most people here can’t differentiate.
But it’s understandable and I was also expecting something more off the GX series and that’s partially because Panasonic did make us think that way. I mean, when they were addressed about the NEX-7 they said that they were planning a new high end camera and then, when they announce the GX1 they say that its competitor is the NEX-5n.
So yes, in a way they fooled people but in another they did listen and they brought the successor of the GX1. The problem is that the competition is getting better, the bar is higher and people expect more.

7 months ago |Exactly, they made a GF1-replacement, not a NEX-7 competitor. Panasonic obviously can’t satisfy all users with a single model.

7 months ago |Just for your information.
The Nex-7 is VISIBLE NOISIER than the G3 (and presumable GX1) w/o much more details at high ISO.

7 months ago |@Renato: Yes, that’s my thinking too. It will be actually interesting to see if they eventually come with a direct competitor to NEX-7. There are several aspects to be considered..
)? Yeah, according to discussions on this website it looks like nearly everybody wants it
but IMO it is a pretty distorted feeling as those who long for it are simply louder than those who don’t.
Is there a sufficient demand for such a type of camera, i.e. a highly compact camera with a built-in VF (yes, in the top left hand corner
The fact is, Panasonic already have a high-end series – GH. Would it be sensible to have two high-end series? Or even to replace the GH series with NEX-7-like cameras? Maybe yes. (Although I would be against the latter myself..) One thing is nearly certain, the ‘compact rangefinder’ camera type would be significantly more expensive since this kind of miniaturization demands new, more expensive technologies, as NEX-7 witnesses..
Among these, the OLED display technology (for the VF) probably poses the decisive factor: Are they (Panasonic) also developing OLED displays? They should be (then how long will it take till they come with them?), but if not, are they going to buy them (which could be very expensive)?
bilgy_no1
7 months ago |Yes, it could make sense if they use the two different sensors for that. G3 replacement with more top left EVF, GX1 without EVF but with multi-aspect sensor. Two lines based on with/without EVF. Model differentiation in those lines based on sensor used. Everyone gets something they like…

7 months ago |This image from the GX1 in the Luminous Landscape review at ISO 400 (taken with the new 45-175mm) is impressive. I look at it and think hmmm..wonder what a raw file at 160 !SO with a nice prime lens stopped down a little looks like..even before I can do some software work on it???
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/1photo-pages/protest.shtml
Also…I have been reading that the new Fuji L camera may be introduced with some advanced sensor technology to advance output from a smaller sensor (which is what I have been hoping for for MFT for so long, but it would appear that there is nothing on the near horizon). Can’t wait for that release!

Genius.
And notice that the viewfinder is scratched to hell? Not a great advertisement.

7 months ago |not to be rude… but the language barrier is bothering the HECK out of me. i mean… you are offically announcing a product to England/US. would you want to pick someone who speaks very very fluent english?
i mean.. seems like a nice guy. kinda feel bad. but, he is struggly to get out the right words and instead of answering with deep new info to every question, he just repeats the same things he already said.
the interviewer was very kind.. and understanding.

Face it man, in the eyes of the globalized world, your language is a mere tool distorted at will to fit the needs of a multiplicity of users

7 months ago |GX1 is a joke of a model. Panasonic is just making an ‘excuse’ to put one more new model on the market with no real technological, feature advancements. I had the G3 and just sold it on auction. I moved on to Sony Alpha65. Larger sensor, BSI technology, can do 1080p, and the EVF one of the best in the industry so far at 2.3MP (GX1 is 1.3 and not OLED if I heard correctly). And it’s not a option to pay for. It’s included by design.

> [...] one more new model on the market with no real technological, feature advancements [...]
Have you missed all the discussion taking place all over the freaking interwebs explaining over and over again that if you want the bleeding edge tech, m43 isn’t for you?
m43 is all about the compromise: good/decent IQ + overall compact and light package.
Comparing G3 and A65 is at the very least laughable. If after G3 you liked the A65, then you definitely can’t exploit the m43′s strengths. Probably you should try the A850 or A900? That’s where Sony’s all the bleeding edge tech is.
P.S. But honestly I think you are simply trolling.

7 months ago |dont call anybody a troll so soon , you know many people are open minded enough to use multi brand systems , I , for one , own 3 Sony bodies , one Oly, 2 Canons and still considering adding a Panny or a Pentax.
the A77V is a great body at the cost of low light perfomance and operation speed .
the A900 is a great landscape low ISO camera but at the cost of all modern DSLR features(such as video , high ISO and fast AF).
the EPL3 is a great camera , more versatile than these 2 Sonys at the cost of really high IQ (especially DR and noise).
the 5Dmk2 is a great most versatile camera you can buy today at the cost of the size and speed.
the NEX5n is a great camera , it is very small versatile and accepts almost 2000 lenses but at the cost of proper ergonomics and quality wide angle zoom.
so, horse for courses, it is not which one is better but which one best fits your needs.

And wait again several years. Until a real successor of Gf1 comes out. What a pity.

7 months ago |Actually even if GX1 performance is not as good as nex5n or nex7, I would consider panasonic camara first due to her pretty appearance. However, I’m quite disappointed by gx1, the grip really ruins her beautiful appearance and please give me back the white colour!

7 months ago |It is hard to please everyone. I myself have no interest in build in VF, and I’m happy to see GX1 as “a sort of a GF4 in X clothing”. It is a nice camera for discrete street/candid photography, which demands as ‘Luminous landscape’ pointed “that you don’t stand there with the camera to your eye” waiting for a shot. As GF1 it is a walk-around “pocket” camera. If one would need the VF to shoot outdoors in bright sun or for a capricious manual-focus lenses, etc. a new improved external VF is available. Relying on good imaging qualities and user interface, similar to G3 or even better, I consider GX1 as a nice future replacement of my GF1. My main complain about GX1 is its price, but I guess the price would drop later.

7 months ago |the interview was good . gx1 design is nice too.. especially the grip is quite useful. seems that i like everything less the sensor, touchscreen, no evf ( that isn’t so important for me ) so if i compare all these things it’s 30 % i like the gx1 Vs 70 % unlike so i think i stick with my gf1 .

7 months ago |Lol Listening to enthusiasts? A large part of them/us have been asking for an affordable range-finder like (ie, with a viewfinder, optic or not) MILC since even before m43 appeared. And what do we keep getting iteration after iteration? No built-in viewfinder.
Fuji almost got it right with the X100, except it’s fixed lens, and not that affordable. NEX-7 looks good, but the lenses not so much, nor the price.
So really, why don’t Panasonic or any of these companies TRULY listen to enthusiasts and release the damn MILC that would be a block-buster from day 1? It’s beyond comprehension
