Panasonic GF2 ghosts :)
I guess I am starting to see ghosts ![]()
I am almost certain that we will see a new Panasonic “GF” camera at photokina. That’s why I am scanning forums all over the world to find some hints. I also made a “stupid” search inside amazon.com for “Panasonic GF2“. Probably this is just some kind of amazon mistake but I found three results with blank entries. I have taken a screenshot but if you perform the search again you will not see that results anymore!

Anyway, try to look for some leaks because I am now sure that there is people (photographers and journalists) holding and testing the camera righ now!

2 years ago |I am kind of surprised that there is going to be a “GF2″ so soon. The GF1 doesn’t need replacing as much as we need a GH2. With the GF13 I have pretty much all of the functionality of the GH1 that I personally really want.
I bet it will just be a slimmer version of the GF1. It probably won’t be as well balanced and it will probably be a lot like the Sony NEX cameras.
What they need to do is make a GH2 that has 40 mb/sec 1080p @ 60 FPS and 100mb/sec 1080p @ 24 FPS MJPEG. Throw in a new sensor with good ISO 6400 and they will have a real winner on their hands. Until then the GH13 and GF13 are tremendous options.
With manual video controls my GF1 can shoot video even in the toughest circumstances.

2 years ago |Hi! As I told you few days ago I don’t expect a GF1 replacement…but a different GF camera!

2 years ago |Admin, you don’t think they will create a new line? as in… a G series? meaning that there are a few lines: G(x), GH(x), GF(x) and the photokina-rumored new G series will be smaller and less upscale than GF1?
I’m just not sure what they could remove/improve on GF1 and still keep it as desirable. The only thing that comes to mind is IBIS, but there is no way panasonic would do that. Take away the flash, no viewfinder capability/hotshoe? Maybe lower the price significantly…. No flash would be a dealbreaker for me. They could try to put the GH1 sensor into it but the size will make long zooms impossible to use!

2 years ago |No new line! We thing the next Gf camera will be very small. So you will have the choice between the GF1 and the very small GF. We are currently “investigating” that rumor…

2 years ago |When you say it will be smaller than the GF1, do you think it will have the same functionality as the GF1 or it will be more basic / more advanced than the GF1? I’m going on vacation at the same time that photokina is on so I’m thinking that I should forget about being able to get a GF2 before then and get a GF1 now, but that would be tough if the GF2 turns out to be a better camera than GF1.

EXIF data says G2, not GF2.

2 years ago |RS: Exif shows Panasonic DMC-G2, not GF2. I think it’s a typo by the user.

2 years ago |@mpgxsvcd: I don’t expect the GF2 to be as good or better than the GF13 at video. It will probably be better than the stock GF1, but Panasonic has to design the camera to the lowest common denominator: ie stupid users who try to use class 2 cards to shoot HD video then complain that the camera freezes.
There’s also the matter of variable SD card quality: I have a class 4 card that’s as fast as my class 10 cards at write speeds. So the stock firmware will never be as cutting (or bleeding) edge as hacked firmware. I just hope Panasonic doesn’t lock out the firmware development we’ve been seeing, as it would be a counter productive move and equivalent to shooting themselves in the foot.
I also see no problems in simultaneously announcing (or releasing) the GH2 and GF2. In fact, I think it would be better, because then people wouldn’t be tempted to wait to see what the specs of the second body will be if they staggered the releases.

I noticed that, aparently the Flickr user made the same mistake several times.

I take your point. I can’t see why folks would buy a GF2 for the addition of a built-in viewfinder or reduced overall size. It’s never going to be truly pocketable, and the tiny EVF is never going to be like using an SLR. This market demographic aren’t looking for that, because they are aware of the obvious trade-offs. We’ll end up with a sub-standard EVF and a still unpocketable camera that’s harder to hold and use because of its reduced size. Why?
The addition of in-body IS would be the best thing they could do IMO, but that’s not going to happen while they continue to invest in in-lens IS. And while we’re on the topic of lenses – where are the portrait primes and useful teles? If the rumours are true they seem to be doubling up on the wideangle pancake primes and standard zooms before addressing this ‘hole’ in the lineup.
In my experience the rest of the GF1′s major problems are software-related – the daft way it defaults to really slow shutter speeds before bumping up the iso in auto/aperture priority modes is quite annoying and so easily fixable at a firmware level. The venus engine’s jpeg processing is behind the competition too, although personally I work in RAW.
