Panansonic GH2 dissembled and analyzed.

Chipworks dissembled and analyzed the GH2 electronic. You can only read the first part of their article. After that you have to pay to read the rest!
There is a new GH2 review at CNET: “It’s speedy, feature-packed, and an excellent ILC for shooting video, but to consistently get really good photos out of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 requires shooting raw.“

2 years ago |Well, it’s certainly not as tight inside as I anticipated. In essence, Panasonic could have installed a 3.5mm jack instead of a 2.5mm jack. However, why not adopt a whole new connector system such as the magnetic ones that Apple uses on laptops? Then use the extra space to add a headphone audio circuit.

2 years ago |Wow very surprised to see just how much solid stainless steel frame there is in the GH2 compared to the CNET dissasembled D7000 with magnesium body. Several reviews have wrongly characterized the GH2 body as being all plastic but this dissasembled view clearly shows that is only the outer case. If anything the GH2 with stainless steel frame may be better protected than the D7000?
I looked at this picture for clues of where the G3 might be heading with its reported new body and I don’t see a lot of scope in reducing the size much in height if they are to use the same chassis of the GH2 and G2 and fit it in except for maybe less width and redesigned smaller grip?
Thanks for posting, Admin. Very interesting view and perspective.

2 years ago |Have there been any reports on the strength of the strap rivets? On the GH1 they are very weak, and the strap connectors on many cameras have broken loose.

2 years ago |Safari, that looks like the same galvanized sheetmetal that is used in a lot of electronic devices.

2 years ago |On second look it does look like galvanized sheetmetal, but still strong. I think it is the flatbars seen on the bottom and elsewhere that are stainless as I recall reading in a review of the GH1 sometime back that it had a stainless steel chassis hence my statement which stands corrected.
As for the strap connectors coming loose that had to do not with the strength of the metal chassis or any rivets but because of nuts vibrating loose from connecting bolt from shutter vibratation transmitted by frame I think. Easily fixed and corrected more of a slipup on assembly as they could have easily have applied superglue once the lug nuts were fastened.

2 years ago |This sentence is very misleading:
“The die markings indicated that the image sensor is the MN34070, also manufactured by Panasonic, with a 16.0 Mp effective resolution.”
No, 16.0 Mp is not the effective resolution of the sensor. The ratio between total pixels and pixels in image files is much higher than in conventional digital cameras due to true multi aspect (wider sensor). The 16.0 Mp is the maximum resolution of files, not the sensor.
Effective resolution is 17.2 Mp (width from 16:9 x height from 4:3)

2 years ago |That site is crazy. To see more pictures they want $200 to $5000 US!!!! I mean the only people who can spend that much on taredown pics are Nikon, Canon etc. And they can take their own pics.

2 years ago |Admin – just a friendly note about vocabulary:
The GH2 was “disassembled”, not “dissembled”.
The word “dissemble” does not mean to take apart. It means to deliberately spread false or misleading information (as in purposefully false rumors). Note that you and your site deal in honest, acknowledged rumors; I have never seen you dissemble.

2 years ago |Am I the only one who thinks that looks like less than stellar build and material quality?
I know expecting anything these days to be well built is a bit much but quite frankly, my Samsung phone is better built than that.

2 years ago |The build quality, for the price point, is excellent, and smart. The frame plates are strong, the circuit boards highly integrated and with minimal edge connector strapping, etc etc. Compare this with the Nikon D7000 disassembly, and you will see that servicing issues are minimized in the Panasonic design. The track record for Lumix camera reliability is very high.
