Two small info, Nikon and me busy at work.

Share

Before to get back to regular m43 news I want to share two small news:
FIRST: Tomorrow (Wednesday) Nikon will announce their new Mirrorless system. As Thom Hogan writes “we have three very distinct choices:

  • Samsung and Sony have chosen a large (APS) sensor. While the cameras are compact, the lenses tend to be the same size as those for consumer DSLRs. These competitors have chosen a quality advantage for a size disadvantage.
  • Nikon has apparently chosen a small (2.7x) sensor. This should result in an advantage in size at the disadvantage of quality. (Pentax also picked small, but they picked “too small.” )
  • Panasonic and Olympus, who really kicked off the craze, are right in the middle, with a sensor (m4/3) that is one notch below consumer DSLRs in size but one notch above Nikon’s choice. Technically, that position compromises size and quality compared to different competitors, but represents a possible Goldilocks choice (“just right”).

What we have here is a marketing opportunity. Each group has something that they can point to that distinguishes them from the others. The question is thus “who’s going to be the best at marketing their advantage?”

Read the full article on his website (Click here). I will follow and write about the Nikon announcement tomorrow on MirrorlessRumors.com.

SECOND: I am again travelling around the world. I have scheduled some news on 43rumros so that you will (almost) not feel that I am actually NOT online. If I miss to post some news or if I miss to answer your mails don’t get angry. On Sunday I will travel back at home and try to answer you all as soon as I can! Thanks!

Full Olympus E-PL3 review at Dpreview

Share
[shoplink 23567][/shoplink]

Dpreview (Click here) posted the complete [shoplink 23567]Olympus E-PL3[/shoplink] review. So what they think after the 22 pages of testing? With an overall score of 73% the camera earns a respectable Silver Award: “We find the PEN Lite to be a well-thought out attempt to lure compact-camera upgraders to both higher image quality and the opportunity to explore manual controls while providing a day to day handling experience that will be far from intimidating.

For me the real question is why Olympus didn’t simply make one camera instead of splitting it into two, the E-PL3 and E-P3. Hmmm…

Those are the search shop links to all three new PEN cameras. Click on it to check price and availability:

Olympus 45mm first impression article at Dpreview.

[shoplink 23577][/shoplink]

The new Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens gets previewed by Dpreview (Click here): “Even at F1.8 it is sharp enough to give plenty of detail in subjects’ eyes. Just as importantly, at sensible working distances, it gives a usefully shallow depth of field on the Four Thirds format and renders out-of-focus regions rather pleasantly

Dpreview confirms what other reviewers said before. This is simply an amazing lens for the price you have to pay for it. Well done Oly!

(FT2) New 45mm pancake from Panasonic coming?

Share

[shoplink 25538 ebay][/shoplink] The new Panasonic 45mm lens is rumored to have the size of that wonderfull [shoplink 25538 ebay]Pentax SMC DA 40mm f/2.8[/shoplink] limited pancake.

I got two rumors from new sources saying that there will be a new 45mm X pancake from Panasonic. According to one of the sources there are currently several prototypes of 90mm equivalent pancakes. What really makes me dreaming about that rumor is that the source said it has the size and style of the Pentax SMC DA 40mm f/2.8 limited pancake [shoplink 25538 ebay](Click here to see that lens on eBay)[/shoplink]. A second source said that the lens will be a X lens with powerzoom, have macro capability like the current [shoplink 14794 ebay]Panasonic 45mm f/2.8[/shoplink].. Sound slike a dream lens! If the lens comes for real than let’s hope Panasonic will not set an impossible price for it!

Reminder -> Rumors classification explained (FT= FourThirds):
FT1=1-20% chance the rumor is correct
FT2=21-40% chance the rumor is correct
FT3=41-60% chance the rumor is correct
FT4=61-80% chance the rumor is correct
FT5=81-99% chance the rumor is correct

Which new mirrorless camera from the competition is the “nicest” m43 competitor?

Share

After the Olympus PEN and Panasonic GF3 announcement in back in June we had three new mirrorless cameras from the competition.
I am now curious to hear which one caught your attention, which one is a camera you would love to see with a Micro Four Thirds mount! I added the Fuji X10 camera as option on the poll. It has a fixed lens but it’s certainly an interesting mirrorless camera!

What camera (from the competition) do you like more?

There are some interesting positive aspects on almost any I mentioned here: The [shoplink 25421]Fuji X10[/shoplink] controls, the [shoplink 25396]NEX-7[/shoplink] built-in OLED viewfinder, the Sony [shoplink 25423]NEX-5n[/shoplink] sensors. I left out the [shoplink 25424]NX200[/shoplink] because I really don’t know what to like about that camera!

P.S.: On Wednesday Nikon will announce their new mirrorless system!
