Olympus underlines their commitment to maintaining the Four Thirds System
Quesabesde just published following text:
“After the traffic generated by the interview published yesterday by QUESABESDE.COM, we have been contacted by Olympus to clarify some ideas explained in the interview. The translation to different languages seems to have distorted the original meaning – according to the company.
This morning Miquel Angel Garcia stated during a conversation on the Olympus photokina booth: “Of course we will not stop the production of Four Thirds lenses of our current catalogue”
The original statement included the words “right now” – and Olympus wants to emphasize this temporal term. In other words, although there are no Four Thirds lenses currently under development, it does not mean that there will be no future lenses based on this technology.
“We are currently concentrating on developing Micro Four Thirds lenses, but the Four Thirds System Technology is alive and we will use it whenever necessary”, they insist.
In line with this, the company underlines its commitment to the E-System users. As an example, the spokesperson reminded us that even today Olympus just launched a firmware update for some of its professional lenses which promises a much better performance with E-5.”
That’s good news!

What can a firmware update improve other than things related to autofocus?!

No new 43 lenses while EVERY OTHER format continues to make progress. To me that equals a dead or dying format.
Dummy00001
2 years ago |Most other systems still struggle to deliver decent affordable optics. I wouldn’t call a progress.
E.g. Canon produces load of their L lenses which pretty much nobody can afford. Affordable lenses are all Sigmas/Tamrons/etc and picking something decent is a problem. I have two all-around lenses – 12-60 and 70-300 – which cover pretty much everything I want. My Canon friends envy both of them: there is no direct analog to quality of the 12-60 and analogues to 70-300 weigh/cost twice more (== unpractical for amateurs).
Yes, 43 might be dying. But it is stupid not to enjoy the benefits while we can

Though I wonder what IQ they would manage to get out of the Feveon sensor.
And the price: X3 remains rather expensive.
Though I’m glad to see the signs that Sigma continues development of Feveon. But as everybody said, it is not an easy task for a small company like Sigma (or Feveon before) to develop sensor on its own. They are in a way competing with Canon, Panasonic and Sony.

2 years ago |im really impressed by the ISO6400 shot with the bicycle. sure it’s grainy but the image is USABLE! and since the noise is more of grain than chroma noise or banding, that would be easier to clean with a good NR software
i love it that the high ISOs are not just spec gimmicks but really usable options
Danillo
2 years ago |I’m pretty impressed as well. It’s not so much the amount of noise (though that seems improved) as it is the quality of noise. If I was shooting a concert, especially if I wanted to output in B&W, I think based on those samples that I’d be comfortable using iso 6400, and having the grain sort of fit in with what I was doing. It’s not revolutionary performance compared to top larger-sensor cameras, but it’s certainly an advance.
On e the flip side, I see that at iso 100 it’s still is appearing to blow out highlights. I was hoping that would be improved. It’s not the end of the world or anything, but especially when I’m shooting waterfalls I’d prefer to have an iso 100 setting that can keep details in highlights. I can work around that, but I was hoping for an improvement.
Archer
2 years ago |I suspect that ISO 100 is a scaled version of the base ISO of 200. Since the pixels are going to get any smaller by changing the ISO, you’ll just have to settle for using neutral density filter if you want slightly longer exposures, or wider apertures during full daylight.

here is a small suggestion from someone with no authority other than being a consumer:
release a price drop, to reflect the fact that (1) the market (ok, speaking for myself) will not support such an astronomical price, (2) the e-5 is NOT technology that is new; it does NOT compete on specs with cameras that have been released for photokina (maybe competes with some cameras of the past year).
e-5 would be my last choice if I were buying today, how is that competitive? my last choice from almost all cameras including old models given the price. these cute little announcements aren’t doing them any favors. bye!

Bottom line: Olympus isn’t currently developing any FourThirds lenses but reserves the right to do so in the future.
Who wants to place bets on whether we will ever see a new FourThirds lens? And, for the record, I am currently not developing a handheld cold fusion reactor, but I reserve the right to do so in the future.

2 years ago |Surprisingly, I wan’t very impressed with the Dpreview samples, although, I’m sure they’ll post more soon. I’m glad FT will continue producing lens and what not, but the price of the E-5 is way to high. I like more current E-620 setup, although having a better processor, video, better screen and SD card access would be nice, without paying $1,700… I’ve been very supportive of Oly and FT development, but now I’m starting to wish the new D7000 had a FT mount. But even then, it probably wouldn’t autofocus. I’m very close to jumping over to the new Panasonic GH2, the only thing holding me back is the lack of image stability.
I’m going to go try my Zuiko 50 mm macro lens on the GH1 or G2 and if I can take handheld macro shots decently, then I’m officially done supporting Olympus. It’ s like they don’t have any clue about what customers want. Yes, the E-5 is nice, but the price is ridiculous, especially considering everything added is basically evolutionary. These days consumers expect more, why? Because other brands are giving them more…..
GC
2 years ago |Spoiler alert*
You will be able to take decent macros with a GH1 or a G2 am a 50mm macro. If you turn IS off on your E620 you will get an excellent preview of what is capable on the G2 of GH1.

2 years ago |You are right, I cannot believe I hadn’t tried it with the IS off. The E-620 works with the 50mm macro, even without IS. It actually seems to fire the flash and shutter even quicker without IS, WOW!!!!

If anyone is interested please let me know, if not, it will be going up on eBay once I decide which Panasonic to get: GH1, GH2 or even GF1….
Of course, I just bought a Panasonic LX5 for $500, oh well I do love that and it is more portable than any of the MFT, so I’ll keep that….

BS Artiste
2 years ago |PS – I make no claim to be a good photographer. However, taking close up college football pictures from the stands in a stadium almost requires long telephoto zoom lenses that are at a max about the size of the Sigma 50-500 plus a teleconverter.
dCap
2 years ago |while these lenses ‘were’ available in a 43 mount, this is just Sigma paying lip service to a.n.other mount. I really struggle with the idea of adding a ‘full-frame’ lens to my ‘half-frame’ camera.
Sigma, for very little effort can pop a 43 mount onto a few of their lenses, and add a few sales. respect for that, nice to have the option … but really for me, Sigma is not an option.
That said I would love to add the 50/1.4 but I have two concerns:
- its designed for a FX chip, will it deliver the goods on our little chip?
- I have concerns about adding any new glass to my system since the Olympus statement on not developing new glass!

I agree. No professional photographers take pictures from the stands. Professionals have sideline press access and expensive long telephoto zoom lenses that are too big for use in the stands. With the 50-500 and the EC-20, I can take some decent pictures on a sunny afternoon from the stands. I definitely do plenty of drinking and yelling and some photography from the stands.

Then you going to shoot with MF, as AF become useless with such high f-number. I have Sigma 30mm/f1.4 and shooting with it at f/1.4 is PITA unless one controls conditions and subjects (e.g. in studio).
Buy an adapter and get the primes from any other system. You wont get the AF – only MF but apparently that you do not need anyway.
And hey people did all that already – for as long as the 43 was on the market.
N.B. LiveView helps with MF lenses greatly.

2 years ago |size too … a 50/1.8 or 50/1.4 is tiny compare to an f2 zoom
Okay, I’m happy to pay 50/1.4 price even though a 50/1.8 in FX is a steal, but to compete with the FX/DX system Oly gotta offer more.
Pan did this with the superb asph 20/1.7, price is 50/1.4+ but it delivers.
super uncomfortable with the Pan/Leica 25/1.4 price. Perhaps I should consider my E-30 body spec + 14-54/2.8-3.5 + 50-200/3.5 price saving over the Canikon systems and take the hit on the Pan/Leica 25/1.4 as a penalty for having this super system.

2 years ago |I cannot understand why so much people demand smaller than 2 apertures. How would a Zuiko look like if i is faster than 2? Tons of glas in order to optimize it? The advantage of Olympus lenses is the wide-open performance that cannot be acheived on fast lenses without excessive corrections.
If someone really needs fast lenses: Sigma 50 1.4 is still there, so is the 30mm 1.4 and Panaleica 25mm 1.4. And please don’t argue with “not designed for”, just put it onto a camera and test it.

2 years ago |I would love to see Oly make a committment to support autofocus as fast as PDAF for all 4/3 lenses on any future u4/3 bodies. Without that, I can’t see buying new 4/3 lenses that might have no better compatibility than manual focus on a pro u4/3 body in the future.
I would do just about as well to buy lenses for another type of mount and use them as manual focus lenses on any u4/3 cameras with an adapter. I purchased a used 4/3 mount 50-500 for my E-30, but that 50-500 only works as a manual focus lens on all u4/3 mount cameras currently available. I could just as well buy a 50-500 with a mount for another vendor and use it as manual focus lens on a u4/3 camera. Then at least the 50-500 would have more value and flexibility going forward to work as an AF 50-500 on another vendor’s mount. For long telephoto zoom lenses, there are no choices in the currently-produced 4/3 lens line-up, and it also looks like there will be no planned lenses of that type for 4/3 for the long-term.
On another note, I have been looking at other products such as the 5D and D700. Based on descriptions of those products, I would lose pop-up flash, articulating LCD, and in-body image stabilization on those platforms. If camera size is not an issue, what other drawbacks are there to switching to those platforms from an E-30? In a system I normally would get 5 or 6 zoom lenses to cover a wide range of photo opportunities.

2 years ago |BS ART I have shot with everything in DSLRs execpt the new ones yet to hit the market, where you will find downfalls are IMO the fallowing; lens quality in build, not nearly as sharp wide open even with the 10K Can/Nik’s pro lenses, lens quality in all visual performance, cost of mid & pro series lenses in direct as possible compairisons, IMO the ease of the back panel to switch almost any setting in 2 seconds, & untill you get into the Dx or 1D series the build of the body.
Now than being said with most of the semipro or pro seris you will gain better HI iso, all execpt the 5DII a better AF system, obviously a much better video mode, more support from seconday manufatures, more lenses, easier to find repacements or renting.
What would help allot of us out is if Olypus would not make vauge or slightly less vauge statments. If the came out and showed a mock-up of a mount that could take both 4/3 or m4/3 lenses & mock ups of new SWD at least MG lenses. It should be very easy to implement; they have the diffrent IS algorithems for the two mounts so it could either be obtained from the mount moving 20mm (both really simple from edgineering standpoint) with a “universal” mount 20mm or a faster 4/3-m43 adapter, or some other fourm of intergration the 2 standards more seamlessly.
For now OVF will reign in performance for several reasons. That time though is getting VERY VERY short, EVF is already tied in FPS performance, the new mounts from OLY & others will exceed the focus capabilities, so IMO every one will go through changes in the top line over then next 5-10 years. If 4/3 can merdge their two fairly well they could be ahead of the game for once.

I agree. I really love my E-30, but this uncertainty of future support of full functionality from 4/3 lenses on newer Oly cameras has me concerned. I wanted to get some HG and SHG 4/3 lenses such as the 8mm, 7-14mm, 12-60mm, and 50-200mm. However, I am not confident in the future functionality support, and that is a problem with spending major amounts on expanding my 4/3 system that might be limited in the future.
I am by no means tied to a mirror box. However, having dipped my feet into higher grade D-SLR cameras from Oly prosumer models 2 years ago, I do not want to go backwards in features. I knew when I chose the 4/3 system that any camera system has tradeoffs such as lesser performance for astrophotography and other low light operation with 4/3. However, I do not like now feeling cornered into a system with little future development and that seems to be surrendering sports and nature photography, which was one of the capabilities that was a deciding factor in buying the E-30.
I don’t mind spending money on equipmemnt, but I can’t do that and have a system essentially end-of-lifed or discontinued 2 years after I started spending thousands of dollars on equipment.
I really need someone to convince me of a confident future for my equipment and system for the types of photography that I like to practice. Right now that is travel landscapes and action sports, although video, astrophotography, and taking pictures while coastal sailing are additional photography applications that I would like to explore.

2 years ago |mmmmmm … are Oly back-tracking with this statement, or were they really taken out of context?
I really love my line-up:
E-P1 + 20/1.7
E-30 + 14-54/2.8-3.5 II + 50-200/2.8-3.5 SWD
they work today as well as they did yesterday and last week … but I want to be part of a system that has lenses I want to lust after (okay: f2 zooms, 150/2, 300/2.8). But I want to realistically lust after the kit, I want to have some f1.4 at the right price (not the Leica 25/1.4 in panasonic dressing)
Oly have rightly jumped in with a new statement since this ‘no more new glass’ thing. I hear no new glass I want out. I’ll sell and go to another system. I want to know that that system I’m in has a future, and a future means some new glass some time.
The range, as stated in a post yesterday: bundle of f2 zooms, some f2.8-3.5 glass, and some consumer stuff. Its really well balanced. The cameras are great: e-620, e-30, e-5 … but it needs a little more. While Oly can enjoy the PEN success why not build on this and give big43 a boost. See how apple does it: iPhone, then iPad, increases their laptop sales from previous Pc users. Great – oly need to see that the PEN has the potential to draw in new big43 users.
If they are back-tracking on this no new glass statement its time to reveal the name and f stop of a few future lenses to keep people dreaming. Our camera kit is a tool but its also a thing of passion …

2 years ago |The GH2 is why… M4/3… is why… tired of waiting YEARS for an update to my E-3 only to be given a piece of shit..is why…I’m jumping ship for a company that continues to grow…and now that the FujiFilm X100 is gonna go for about $1000, it’ll compliment whatever DSLR I end up purchasing…but either way… you’re a “sinker” Dana! Actually hoping you WILL stay with 4/3 (and people like you) so that the price of what I really want doesn’t go up due to the competition…(^.^)

2 years ago |BS ART I understand all points of view in this “decision time”/ argument for other formats. I like other formats for diffrent reasons & equipment & though I LOVE Oly glass I am not tied to it idefinatly either. Hi ISO on other formats is OMG soo temping, then with the glass sharpness open isn’t comparable. Usually from my exp it takes 2 stops to get about even or more on SHG, L, Nik pro, so allot of the high ISO advantage disappears. Though IMO not all of it (I know it is subjective) the Panny blue & banding stinks so far in hi iso & DR, not to mention even still don’t know if the E5 has 14bit let alone 16bit (I wish, it is awsome from my exp with MF digital). To replace my 7-14, 12-60, 50-200, 35-100 with as close as comparable glass would be reticulesly expensive, let alone nikon Pentax or Leaf for me sounds like a better personal addition for certain apps. Though the lack of 1080i or p dose put a bit of a crimp on it’s own, being able to sell HD clips would defiantly help my pocketbook in current ecconimey. I would have bought the E5 for $3400 if it had Panny G2 specs on launch day!

I agree. I would have paid major dollars for an E-5 with high end video, even though I am not a pro, and just enjoy taking photos as a hobby. An E-5 with high end video would have met my additional needs for video and for a camera that works for coastal saltwater sailing. I also was hoping for Oly to produce a long telephoto zoom to replace the Sigma 50-500 and 135-400 for sports and nature.
I never expected Oly to be competitive in the astrophotography market, and I am fine with buying a specialized telescope imager instead of a general purpose camera for astrophotography. Still if I have to reopen my camera system decision, I will consider astrophotography as one of the applications.

Give professional 4/3 and micro4/3 users
- a Top Pro Zuiko/m.zuiko Macro 100mm Prime f/2.5 SWD,
CD- and PD-autofocus-compatible
- a Top Pro Zuiko/m.zuiko 200mm-600mm Supertele f/3.5-5,0 SWD,
CD- and PD-autofocus-compatible
each with eleven contacts for future video functions and two lens-adapters in the lens-pack{!] (one for 4/3 mount, one for m4/3 mount).
Sell flexible lenses instead of cameras with adapters.

2 years ago |I just don’t believe Olympus can bend the laws of physics, consider the size of the sensor is the same for 43 and m43, if they are going to make a SHG 14-35 SWD F/2.0 for m43, the lens itself will still need a diameter similar to the current design, which is around 10cm. With the continous miniature of mirrorless bodies, such design will be against the market trend.
So IMO Olympus will not design lenses as F/2.0 fixed aperture SHG zoom lenses for m43, at most they will make HG lenses. That’s why there are rumors saying Olympus will make a modular body which can use all. In the future you will see E-xx and E-xxx in while only keep their top grade SHG lenses in FourThirds design and E-x body in modular config.

2 years ago |Dear Joseph,
I fully agree with you!
That’s why I mentioned only two special lenses with a very limited professional target group.
The Macro 100 mm is long awaited from professional 4/3-users.
An extreme Supertelezoom” (200-600mm) is still missing in the Olympus range of articles for the sport- travel and wildlife-Pros.
Apart from that the choice of Olympus Top Pro lenses is perfect and completed.
Dear Joseoh, thank you for your very sophisticated feedback and advice!

2 years ago |Top Pro would imply a fixed aperture, so a 200-400 f/4 would be a possible solution. 600mm on FT also implies lots of glas. The market for such a lens would be very small. The 90-250 f/2.8 is already there and performs very well even with ec20, so where is the reall need for such a lens? It won’t be any cheaper than 90-250 + ec20 (=> 180-500 at f/5.6).
A pro spec 200-400 f/4.0-5.6 would be a useful and affordable addition to product lineup anyway. I’d buy it

2 years ago |Persuaded!
But for “discovery channel production” (animal planet) a common Top Pro or Pro extreme Supertele Zoom (200-600 mm, motor zoom) plus high quality converter (400 -1200mm) of Olympus and Panasonic (eventually Sigma, Cosina?)remains an option.
Olympus, Panasonic (think on the AG-AF101 too), Cosina and Sigma will gain a considerable world market share with their new systems. They will make way for common specialized products even if there is a very limited target group!
They simply should work together and bring to their consumers the best possible products to the best prices by licensing the most innovative technologies to each other (body image stabilization, AVCHD-Knowhow, Wireless Flash, multi-scale sensor, back light technology, dust cleaning system, weather sealed body …) and cut development and production cost.
Competition will be rough!
Sony, Samsung, Nikon and Canon will be big challenge.

@other guy with 5-6lens -why do you use so many lenses?

2 years ago |Wow # of down coments for not reading the whole txt. No new 4/3 lens development was something reported here but came from an Olympus spokes person. If you look at the “old” lens designs compared o the SWD, it is very diffrent! Not just the motors (which are completly diffrent & cause the lens bodies to have to be redesigned), but also in each the internal lenses & capabilities changed. While the oustide still was similar inside they are VERY diffrent from an engineering standpoint. O how I wish I could buy a 35-100 or 90-250SWD, but it really is not a simple refresh to build them. By the time the new optics, body, & motors were designed & ready to build you would have easily at least 4,000 man hours from optics desgin, engineering, the back & fourth to finish the design in the right size/weight/cost, motors, testing for reliability, optic tests on a camera to make sure it delivered proper performance, tooling, production set up & training, AF algorithms, any retooling, let alone training the glass pollishers to get each of the 11+ lenses curved right, & let us face it not easy to do ESP on big glass. For pro glass that has to be dang near perffect for years it is a he’ll of an investment before a finnished product rolls out so if they are moving to the m4/3 mount & have a modular system or a new adapter it would make much more sense to build them with the faster interface of m4/3.

2 years ago |Olympus has really blown a big opportunity. I really love my E410 and I’ve shot many weddings with it, but the E5 just isn’t worth the upgrade. I switched to Olympus several years ago because Pentax was lagging way behind in the digital market (before the switch I shot with Pentax exclusively) but now that Olympus is lagging and Pentax has made the big leap, I guess I’ll drag my 50mm f:1.1.2 lens out of the closet. I realize I’m in the minority, but I could care less about HD movie features. I would much rather have a bona-fide pro setup that only does stills. When I’m shooting a wedding, the last thing I care about is toggling to video mode. Hopefully Olympus will get back on track soon.

2 years ago |It is an interesting conundrum and understandable many Oly users are confused about the future of the 43’s Standard that excited us when it was first released and has many who have since become loyal Olympus users.
I am a pro shooter who has progressed from the E10, the award winning E20 and onto the 4/3’s of E1 and E3 with a selection of lenses. I have always loved the build, weather-proofing and image quality of all of them and have patiently watched the developments of the Olympus cameras (often with some exasperation with what is released and how it released. Especially when the late arrival of the E3 and now the E5 and all that surrounds it.
I work with several other shooters (Nikon and Canon) and they always comment on the rendering qualities of the Olympus cameras when they compare them to their respective pro cameras and I am always proud to say the I am Olympus.. even with their bemused looks of disbelieving envy. They are outstanding cameras but the company seems to have a history of innovating but not being able to maintain that (i.e. OM lenses which many still stack praise on for their quality optics. The Zuiko’s are the same… and maybe the E5 can give them their full potential. But is it too late. I hope not.
So I am in the dilemma as I was going to purchase the E5 and add the 14-35mm SHG lens to my kit. By all accounts it is meant to be a standout lens.
I am pretty sure I will go with the E5, but not to sure about investing AU$2,000 for a great piece of glass that might only get a couple of years use.
For me, I would like to see/know:
1)What the next stage holds in regard to the next development by Olympus and will my 4/3 lens investment be compatible with the much touted ‘modular’ camera..
2) If the m4/3 range is extended and there is a pro m4/3 camera in the pipeline will it be able to take 4/3’s as well.
These two two things will have a HUGE bearing on my future plans for camera and equipment; as mentioned, will probably get the E5 but hold of on the new SHG lens as to buy whole new kit is too much but I can wear the AU$2,000 for the E5 and then switch in a year or two if the whole 4/3 Olympus thing goes pear-shaped.

2 years ago |Are the 4/3 lenses like the Olympus 14-35 f2.0 fully usable -through the adapter- with the GH1-GH2 in video mode ?
Silent autofocus and so on OK, like with the 14-140 ?
