Olympus E-M5 a hotseller ? (+ updated preorder list for US/Europe/Japan).

I don’t know how reliable those rankings are but at Amazon (Click here) the Olympus E-M5 is the most sold mirrorless camera of the moment. It even beats the X PRO 1. But we have to check back in a few days to see if that momentum will be kept or not.

Robin Wong (Click here) wrote his first impression about the E-M5.
Olympus presentation picture by Pixinfo (Click here). Amazing detail, the press release took place inside a Truck!!!
Presentation pictures from Japan (Dc.watch).
PenAndTell (Click here) impressions in german. The administrator is a known figure close to Olympus Europe. Interesting, he writes: “whats new? […]the sensor: compared to the E-P3 there is aprox. 1,5EV less noise and 0,3 more dynamic range. and NO, it isn’t another “spiced up” Panasonic sensor!

    want . to . preorder . in . europe

    • Amazon rankings probably semi reliable of people’s intentions, that’s about it, we’ll have to see how it translates into hard sales (which I’m hoping/expecting to be good).

      • MichaelKJ

True, it is easy to pre-order knowing that you have 6 weeks or more to cancel.

Amazon US has stopped taking pre-orders for the D800 and I wouldn’t be surprised if it does the same soon for the E-M5.

I’m also hoping that the E-M5 is a big success.

    Thats great news admin

Admin you had my heart beat racing…you wrote

    I think you mean E- M5

  • EASY

    Yeah, with availability in April…

  • It will sell like hot cakes. Except to the nerds with magnifying glasses who have nothing better to do than complain.

    • bananacam

why would anyone buy this instead of gh2 or g3??

      • Vlad

        Huh?

      • The Other Chris

        Weathersealing.

  • PS

In the Amazon rating 4 of the top 5 are E-M5s and the one that isnt is not even a mirrorless!

  • Jason

If it does not use a Panasonic sensor, then Fuji or Sony I guess….

  • hellbike

When x-pro1 was out it was #4 on all digital cameras, while olympus is #14 in all digital cameras, so it’s rather nothing special.

    • PS

I think it is SPECIAL to be No. 1

    • Anonymous

E-M5 has 6 combination to pre order and it occupy 4 out of the top 5 of mirrorless while I can only count 1 type of xp-1..

    • z

Oly has 6 combination that ocupy 4 places on the top 5 while fuji only has 1.. Shocking?

  • So it’s not a Panasonic sensor but the numbers put it about gx1 sensor performance compared to the pens… Hmmm okay. The difference at this point is irrelevant and academic, as to who makes it then.

    • OR maybe he meant to say “no it’s not another ‘spiced up’ Panasonic sensor… It is identical to a Panasonic sensor.” 😉

  • MichaelKJ

It is also the 14th best selling digital camera on Amazon US (and 5th among all ILCs).

  • I really want a silver body with silver 12-50mm…
Bummer that the lens seems to be ALWAYS black if you buy a kit. 🙁

    • Fan

Maybe this will change after some time.

  • The hell… #2 on Amazon’s list is the GE Power Pro X500-BK…..

  • JF

0.3 EV more dynamic range compared to EP3 is less dynamic range than G3/GX1 sensor (dxo)…hum…

    • Camaman

      LOL!
Those stats must be rigged, that proves it!

  • Fan

I will buy it too, but not pre-order it.

  • drj

Everything but surprising: just have a look at a well-established french periodical called “Chasseur d’Image” and notorious (or supposedly so) for its 43 bashing. To say the least, they praised the E-M5. Its price being further very well-positioned, you got a winner…

  • was this already posted here?
2 full size samples from the olympus site:

    • Vivek

Oh, they are just horrible! What kind of a camera spits out skies with so many bubbles and floating pieces of ice?!!!!

      • I think we have to wait before we can say something definitiv about the image quality. Robin Wong wrote, that he has to wait about 4 weeks before he will get a cam for testing, because of this: “I myself cannot wait to see how well the camera fares, but that will have to wait. Even Olympus Malaysia will have to wait for Olympus Japan to release their latest firmware update on the E-M5 before it can be used for any official review or testing.” 🙁

    • TB

Nice find… I’m really liking the output on the EM-5.

    • Tom

Too early to tell, but I’m really liking what I see from these two images. Nice DR in the snow image (look at shadows under the rocks), they must have used a polarizer to get that sky and cut reflections off the snow, so makes the shadow detail even more impressive. In the watch photo, at 100%, you can see individual scratches on the mechanism and hairs on the brown material – NR would have scrubbed that.

I’m sure Oly did some tricks to get these two images, looking forward to some independent tests, but looking good!

Can be preordered from Cyberphoto.se and Netonnet.se here in Sweden for 11990 SEK including the 12-50.

    • The Real Stig

      That’s €1,357.63 in real money. 😉

      • TB

If we’re being technical, real money is gold, silver, oil and land. Euros and Dollars constitute governments’ mechanism to steal from society’s savers through inflation and perpetuate the welfare-warfare state. Yes, I did vote for Ron Paul.

      • pingflood

“Real money” as you define it sure has gotten cheaper for us Swedes lately. 😉

  • The E-D5 is much more mainstream than the Fuji X-Pro1, so it would be a failure if it didn’t sell more.

    • Camaman

Is the EU price officially set?
Is it really going to be 1099€ body and 1299€kit?

That is like 45% more for EM5 body than for EP3 14-42 kit !!!
In USA the difference between the two is 11% … That is shameful.

Is it something Olympus did in the past? Will the EU get price drops earlier? 🙁

      • flash

Don’t EU get the extra grip and battery pac?

        • Camaman

          Not for free they don’t…

  • See “What would you like to ask to Olympus”
