Olympus 45mm f/1.8 shipping and first AF test.
And finally also US citizen are receiving their pre ordered Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lenses. About time! The lens has been announced exactly three months ago! The video on top is made by Mike Kobal which shows a short AF test. And Adam compared that lens with the Canon 50mm 1.8 FD and Minolta 50mm 1.7 MD on a video you can see on youtube (Click here). 2 years ago |Just got mine today. It’s very sharp and the build quality is decent.. but the autofocus hunts a bit on my E-p2 in darker places….

2 years ago |I think maybe you are compairing the sharpest Oly lens ever made with old glass… so I should expect it to be sharper… (possibly the 4/3 50mm F2 is the sharpest lens made ever???)
But your totaly right all the best of my old respected glass is blown away by the kit 14-42 oly from my EP1!

I already love the lens tack sharp and a super dof. Though the wire focus is a bit jumpy with filming. But hey who buys a rolling shutter cam for filming…..

2 years ago |frank, I have also collected some old FD lenses and I espacially enjoy my 1.4/50mm, 1.8/85mm and 2.8/200mm. Of course, they might not be so brilliant as native m4/3 lenses would be, but anyway, I really enjoy using it to use them. It makes fun!

that’s the same experience i have currently when i compare the olympus 4/3 zuiko 50mm f2 to a legacy nikon 50mm f1.4.
the 1.4 is nice for extreme low light situations, but it’s not nearly as sharp as the olympus lens, at any aperture. nor does the nikon have the contrast that the zuiko has.

2 years ago |The FD lenses (I have the 50mm 1.4) allow low light photography on m4/3 for cheap.
I can shoot inside my house at night for $50.
The kit lens is essentially worthless for shooting people in low light.

2 years ago |I have some FD lenses and my experience is that the useability and the image quality of those legacy lenses is greatly exaggerated. Yes, a nice image is possible from about f5.6 on, but nowhere near as good as native m43 lenses wide open. So yes, I will buy a native m43 portrait lens over a legacy lens.
I am just wating for a pancake portrait lens from panasonic, like the 20/1.7, I hope…

2 years ago |When the M16 rifle was introduced in the 60′s a lot of old soldiers din’t approve because it was mostly plastic. By the time they’d had to march 30 miles with one, they’d all changed their minds. Some of those weapons are still being used today, except for the ones in which the metal bits wore out.

2 years ago |The Amazon ‘first user review’ is pretty useless. He spends most of his time kvetching about the fact that the lens has some plastic barrel components, about the number of diaphragm blades, and about that it costs more than a Canon 50/1.8. There’s nothing wrong with plastic if it’s used properly, the number of diaphragm blades isn’t all that important, and I can read the price tags for myself, thank you very much…
