Olympus 45mm f/1.8 review (and in Stock at BHphoto).
The Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens is now in Stock for the first time at BHphoto (Click here). The lens is alreayd in Stock in Europe and Asia at Amazon Germany, France, UK and Japan.
And there is a new lens review at ePhotozine (Click here): “The low price may be a little misleading at first glance, as this lens is a very capable optic. Those looking for a fast aperture prime lens for portraits, photography in low light, or for greater control over depth of field will not be disappointed“.

8 months ago |My huge problem: this one (45/1.4) or the Pana 45–200?
As I already have the vintage Auto Revuenon 55/1.4 (obviously among the Pana 14–42 kit), unfortunately the telezoom will be the winner – although I’m afraid that the incredible 257 EUR for the 45/1.8 won’t last too long on Amazon Deutschsland…

7 months ago |The 45-200 is not bad for portraits, but judging from reviews, the Oly is in a different class and has 2.5 stops advantage. I sold my 45-200 and bought the 100-300 for long tele (it is much better than 45-200 or 14-140). I am very tempted by the Oly to cover the other end of the range.

7 months ago |90 mm eqv. and F1.4 @ 250 EUR? Give me just one example, please.
Martin
7 months ago |If you talk in equivalence terms, than it behaves like a 90mm f/3.5 FF lens. But in terms of the price, it really should be compared to 45mm f/1.8 lenses and the like..
kesztió
7 months ago |In terms of DOF maybe, but this is a 4 times brighter lens, so it’s everything but equivalence.
Martin
7 months ago |No, it’s not ’4 times brighter’. Brighter is the lens that has a bigger entrance pupil, as it simply lets in more light (in absolute terms). And guess what, a 45mm f/1.8 and a 90mm f/3.5 lenses have the same entrance pupil size…

7 months ago |Surely the FF equivalent should be cheaper as it does not have to be made to such fine tolerances and compact dimensions. The quality of the glass also has to be higher too. The Oly is a good value lens no doubt.

That’s partially true. On the other hand a FF lens must cover a (much) larger image circle, so the optical design becomes more complicated to achieve good results.
>The Oly is a good value lens no doubt.
I agree.

8 months ago |I know it’s not metal. But can someone who has seen it in person comment on whether it looks like gray plastic or metal in person. The photos really make it look shiny and metallic. The appearance shouldn’t matter. But for me, it does. Thanks for any opinions!
Mar
8 months ago |It looks metalic and it’s very well built despite being plastic – quite hard and tight.
Bokeh is wonderful and it’s really sharp even at f1.8
few photos to see how the bokeh looks like

)
It’s pretty mettalic looking… as evidenced in the digital rev video where Kai actually says it is metal. Anyone looking closely can see it’s plastic, but if just hooked up to your camera, I doubt anyone will know different.
I was really happy with the results of this lens… but only had a day or two to play with it before I returned my camera for replacement.
Gotta say though, E-PM1 with 14, 20 and 45 primes makes a great little travel kit

mooboy
7 months ago |It had a bright blue pixel on the sensor, that is, every photo I took had a bright blue spot in exact same spot. But I just got the call yesterday that my replacement is in. I also managed to swap from black to white (all my other cameras are black) so maybe it’s a good thing.

8 months ago |It looks and feels plastic with a metalic finish. In comparison to the 2.0/12mm, it is a little more “greyish” and shines a little less. The deko ring is prone to scratches. The lens hood mount is better than on the 2.0/12mm, because it is of bajonet type (vs. screw). The 2.0/12mm is significantly heavier.
The AF of the 1.8/45mm makes a little noise, which you only hear, if your environment is silent. So in very(!) silent situations it may affect video.
Other than that, the 1.8/45mm is a super performer, very good IQ and fast AF. The facts in the first to paragraphs are absolutely no reasons, not to buy this lens.

I also got tired of waiting for this lens to arrive at local retailers so bought from HK. Ordered Friday afternoon, arrived Monday morning, I was stoked!
