Not again :( Panasonic shows X lenses mockups at CP+ (and Olympus too)
Not again! Panaosnic is showing the mockups of the new X lenses…again and over again! DC.watch (Click here) visited the Panasonic booth which doesn’t unveil any new info about the upcoming X lenses.
And also Olympus seem to “learn” from Panasonic and is showing their new lens mockups without o unveil the exact release date and price (via Dc.watch):

Don’t know you guys, but I don’t like that kind of marketing.

4 months ago |well… at least Olympus has an aperture set in place + engineering, panasonic just seems to be mock-up only- empty cylinders with no glass in them.
DonTom
4 months ago |The problem is, Olly has just shifted the bar with a weatherproof camera and lens. In all fairness, Panny has to start again with the GH3. We would all laugh them off the page if their next top body isn’t weatherproof. And it will have to be “more weatherproof” to remain the top m43 cam.
So the engineers need to get busy, the GH3 needs to be quite special, and the fast zooms need to match it. For once, Panasonic has to play catch-up!
Raines
4 months ago |I’m actually *really* excited to see what Panasonic’s follow up will be! The GH3 I think will be a great specialty camera that’s the only one on the market that caters to it. If they would just take those hacks and implement them.
DonTom
4 months ago |@Raines: Me too. I know eventually I’ll be getting a Panny m43 for video, for my son as he gets more serious. I’m fairly sure they’ll stay ahead of the curve for video. I guess they are scrambling to manage 4K on the GH3? I’m sure it will be a significant step up from the GH2.
But the E-M5 will be for me, and the kit lens until the fast Panny zoom comes out. I’ll probably get the 12-35, as long as it’s weatherproof. I’d likely get the Olly 60/2.8 Macro instead of the Panny 35-100. Hoping for a fast telephoto prime, 250-300/2.8 would do me fine. I already have a legacy 200/F3, so I know a similar modern lens in plastics wouldn’t be ridiculously huge.

4 months ago |As big as it is, the 12-60 is the ultimate lens (in my book). I’ve just about given up on Pany releasing the 12-35 or anything similar. I just hope the OM-D can focus faster with 43 lenses. I don’t know why the m43 body’s can’t? If the OM-D can make all that good 43 glass viable again, it would be a great new market for them.
occam
4 months ago |“I just hope the OM-D can focus faster with 43 lenses.”
100% same camp here. The 12-50mm is just another soft lens. The 12-60mm is a keeper.
FYI, the issue is that FT lenses use a different (mirror based) focusing system, PDAF. The MFT bodies support CDAFocusing. So the FT lenses need some TLC (Tender Loving Care) from Olympus to get their focus performance back to normal with MFT bodies. Fingers crossed for the E-M5.

4 months ago |@occam–Thanks for the explanation!
Nico Foto
4 months ago |“I don’t know why the m43 body’s can’t?”
Simple. Those lenses where designed for phase detection AF, and m43 uses contrast detection AF, which requires different kind of motors for the lens to focus fast.

4 months ago |Now that we know the Oly 60mm has no new, crazy features, it looks impressively large (though not in a favorable way). If the glass is superb, no problem. But the macro 60mm really looks like a 60mm lens with a built-in extension tube (i.e., uber-long).
It seems weird that the 43 50mm + adapter would be smaller. And the 43 50mm was a signature sharp lens, so why mess with success only to make the lens larger? Weird.
If it’s a great lens, I’m happy, but I will still be confused as to how a 50/60mm macro lens got so large in translation to MFT.
Oswald
4 months ago |The FT 2/50 is up to 1:2, the new mFT 2,8/60 will be up to 1:1 ratio. And for this you need a much longer tubus, if you don’t use focusing by shortening the focal length.
occam
4 months ago |Ahh, good point. So: 2x extension tube built-in for 1-stop “price.” Sounds like a worthwhile deal, but still huge.
I am glad there’s some meaningful advantage though. I hope the 60mm will be as sharp as the 50mm (hard to be sharper!-).
Thank you for your clear explanation. I seriously look forward to this lens (effectively 2x on MFT
).
xmort
4 months ago |If I understand it correctly the advantage in size of m4/3 lenses versus the regular 4/3 lenses progressively diminishes with the lens focal length. Thus it might be expected that at 60 mm there wont be much of a difference between m4/3 and 4/3 lens of the same specs. And as mentioned previously the 50 mm is only 1:2 macro. Besides you cant really judge the size of the 60 mm unless you see it side by side with the 50 mm.
Fan
4 months ago |It has internal focusing, which is always great for a macro. Much easier for lighting and framing.
occam
4 months ago |Ahh, internal focusing also sounds nice. Advantage: Olympus MFT.
PS
4 months ago |Also you can select different magnification ratios on the lens, this was not possible with 43 50mm
Fan
4 months ago |I think it’s just a scale and the result of focusing. Of course if you focus manually, you can thus “select” the ratio and move closer to the object to get your ratio.
PS
4 months ago |From what I can make out there is a selector marker – a red dash, which is running in a selector window selecting the various magnifications
1:1
1:2
1:4
There is also a switch partially visible on the bottom which may be used for this selection?

So that and the slightly longer focal length of the 60 may explain the size.

4 months ago |This is just an annoying tease now… These Panasonic lenses would go awesome on a GH2/3 or EM5/EM5+grip.
Maybe Panasonic is unsure if there is interest… can you start a poll for who will buy the f2.8s at $1,000 each?
marcram
4 months ago |Please start a poll for who will buy them at different price points. This may help them determine price strategies. I really want that lens, but don’t think I’d pay $1000 for it. m43 is beginning to get expensive. In the end, I’m all for high quality at whatever price is necessary.
Reza
4 months ago |That’s an interesting point you brought up. No manufacturer (be it cars, watches, computers or cameras) *wants* to be the cheaper alternative. Being cheaper in the market is a losing proposition in the long run. Olympus and Panasonic are no different. They had no other option but to start the m43 on a value proposition basis, to get market acceptance and market share. But now that they have enough momentum they simply have to change their model to “products at a premium” that users want to buy because of their own merits, not because they are cheaper than larger cameras.
A healthy business strategy for m43 dictates that they sell their products to you based on their strengths: Small size, durable, weather proof, high quality optics (the recent lenses from Olympus and upcoming Olympus and Panasonic lenses), best video recording implementation, superior focusing precision than DSLRs through fast CDAF and good enough to handle professional jobs.
They cannot afford to keep being the value proposition manufacturers in the long run. In fact if the Olympus gambit on E-M5 pays off, I can see another m43 camera from Olympus in two years at a price point closer to $2k. As for Panasonic, they are already there with their AF-100 and to some lesser extent GH2. People interested in video *want* to buy those cameras not because they are cheaper, but because they are superior in video than anything else in the market.
Nico Foto
4 months ago |I don’t think m43 at any point was a cheap proposition. Small, yes, but not cheap. Remember when the GF1 and EP-1 when first launched? They were certainly not cheaper than entry level DSLRs with much better specs…
Its true that m43 gear depreciates far quickly than other cameras. For instance you can now get an E-P1 for what…30% of what it originally costed? After how many years? 3? Crazy.
Esa Tuunanen
4 months ago |> superior focusing precision than DSLRs through fast CDAF
Plain contrast AF won’t cut it for fast moving targets because of its trial and error nature.
Some sort of hybrid AF would be needed.
Nikon might be just tweaking that hybrid AF better for releasing fully featured APS-C mirrorless.
Nico Foto
4 months ago |It would be nice, but i don’t really expect nikon taking such a bold decision. They have been developing the Nikon 1 for 4 years now, they need to recover the money they spent in R&D…So i don’t expect them releasing a new mirrorless system very soon.

4 months ago |The size and price of the lens should be roughly equivalent to the f4 version in FF (since the sensor and glass would be about half the size). So you need to look at Canon/Nikon 24-70f4 and 70-200f4 for comparison.
I’m guessing $1,300 max for these lenses.
Chez Wimpy
4 months ago |>(since the sensor and glass would be about half the size)
1/4 the size actually. The equivalent would be a FF constant 24-70/70-200 f5.6 lens… of course, we all know they won’t be priced to match.

4 months ago |I don’t like this kind of marketing either, but at least it’s one step more tangible than listing a bunch of fantasy lenses on a piece of paper and calling it a “roadmap.”
Sure, we all would prefer that they say, “We will release lens A on April 25 at price X… followed by lens B on October 4 at price Y… and then lens C in January 2013 at price Z.”
But in all honesty, they probably don’t know. I suspect the optical and mechanical designs still aren’t finalized, and after that they have to plan when they will fit production into their overall schedule, and then they have to organize field testing and dealer information and distribution and promotion campaigns… not to mention choreographing carefully-planned “leaks” (-:
In the meantime they have to show SOMETHING to keep a place in the consumer’s mind — otherwise silly forum-driven photographers will be tempted to jump ship to the equally-nonexistent vaporware of whichever manufacturer is willing to make up the most appealing fantasies about its future possible products!
Vivek
4 months ago |“..but at least it’s one step more tangible than listing a bunch of fantasy lenses on a piece of paper and calling it a “roadmap.””

Way better this way than the “road map” of Sony. They produce more camera bodies than prime lenses. And every one out three they make is a DOG.

4 months ago |I need a macro and a longer tele/zoom – it seems I have to wait as long if I stay in m43 as if I switch to Fuji Pro.
According to Ken Rockwell the Fuji X100 always nails exposure and color balance and has plenty detail in both highlight and shadow areas. Images I’ve seen from the Pro indicates that camera shares those strengths. And very impressive performance in low light-high ISO.
EM5 is a significant step for Olympus, but IQ same level as G3/GX1 – no halleluja from here…
PS
4 months ago |You will have to weigh the lens line up too…Cant see Fuji getting a range anywhere close to m43.
Also you have to weigh the size of the lenses specially when you will come to zooms. You will reach the same size as the Sony’s and also poor performance on the edges.
frosti7
4 months ago |I don’t care how long it would take for Panasonic to actually release the x lens, as long as it would be f2 or faster as f2.8 does not make any sense on 2x crop
JF
4 months ago |And a huge heavy lens doesn’t make sense either on m43…I prefer a reasonably sized constant 2.8 or maybe 2.5 for the 12-35
Z
4 months ago |No way. The olympus 12-35 is 2 pounds, the 35-100mm is 3.6 pounds.
m4/3 is a light weight system, those lenses would not make sense.
Just go full frame if you want that DOF, with the weight of the lenses the camera body weight will not have that big an impact.
I think f2.8 is a sweet spot for m4/3 zooms.
PS
4 months ago |I have my doubts that 2.8 constant will be possible on these lenses keeping the size in mind. The fastest constant f lens in m43 is a f4
If it is, I will be pleasantly, very pleasantly surprised

4 months ago |That is correct, m43 isn’t the low light king and it will never be.
But my D700 body alone weighs in more than my GH2 will weigh with this lens attached. That’s the point of m43: small size and little weight.
FX and m43 have different strengths and weaknesses, so they compliment each other very well. I wouldn’t want to shoot indoor sports with a m43 camera, but I wouldn’t want to carry my Nikon equipment with me when travelling either.
Anyway, these new fast Panasonic zooms will lift the m43 system to a new level of performance. I hope they will be on sale soon

I agree, it is not a FF system, and shouldnt replace your D700,

An f2.8 wont give you much, really wont.

4 months ago |Patience, people.
These lenses will come. There are limits to manufacturing capacity and the lines are tooled up one product at a time, to say nothing of the value of doing several prototyping cycles. The X 14-42 is now out there in quantity to help move along camera sales, and the X 45-175 is also available. We waited close to 2 years for the 100-300 to actually appear. Faster than f2.8? Makes for heavier more costly lenses and this reduces the market scope, so it is a trade-off. Cosina may be a “boutique” manufacturer, but Panasonic is definitely not. If you need speed in longer focal lengths, pick up good legacy glass in the $300 to $600 range, an adapter for $20, and go get your images.

Panasonic, given their usual delays in production, will basically have shown the 12-35mm 1.5-2 years before it is commonly available. That’s pretty silly given that it is such an important lens.
Of course, Sony did the same thing with the 500mm f/4, but that is a different beast altogether, and not something I think many photographers are clamoring for.

Maybe they should go back to doing it the old way like Pany did with the GF2…. Just roll something out that no one wants or is a big step backwards.
Excellent sites like this one have a responsibility to help encourage manufacturers to ask us first and listen to us when we respond, not take childish shots at them for doing the right thing. You’ll know it’s not a market test when there is a target release date, that’s always worked for me.

That’s not just marketing, that’s also very useful for the end user. Those who plan in advance can now be certain they’ll get the lens they need by the end of the year.
