4 months ago |Wish that instead of building lenses with similar focal lengths, someone would make a fun super-wide prime e.g. a 10mm.

4 months ago |There is already a fun (and really good) fish-eye lens available: http://www.photozone.de/olympus–four-thirds-lens-tests/714-samyang7535

4 months ago |I wouldn’t worry about manual focus on this Samyang, you can just set it to infinity all the time.
And if you have Lightroom 4, you can just use Nikkor 10mm profile to de-fish.

4 months ago |I’m tempted by the lens, but don’t have the software to de-fisheye :/ Actually I’d like to shoot video with a lens that wide…
MarcoSartoriPhoto
4 months ago |Can you kindly put a link of some de-fished pictures please? That sounds interesting to me.

4 months ago |I mostly agree with Farrukh’s first statement. But i wish a serious (not fun) super-wide prime, and i don’t want to de-fish everytime. I can’t compose and i don’t want to compose if i see it “fished” on the camera display and have to rethink it “de-fished”, probably losing details around the edges.
No, a serious super wide angle prime would be it. I’d say 8 or 9 mm (16 or 18 mm equiv).
But i like the use of “fish” in this context.

4 months ago |I wonder if sigma had previously given these lenses out to different bloggers so that reviews could be released near the time of the announcement. Hopefully the comparisons aren’t too far away, I cancelled my two-lens mkI order just incase these mkII lenses give better image quality.

4 months ago |Doubtful about better IQ. The new lenses seem to be identical, except the new ones look better and have “A” engraved.
You are not paying extra for image quality – these are most likely the same thing optically.

4 months ago |I can’t comment on the sigma lenses on mFT so far I only have Panasonic or Olympus lenses. Though I recently bought the new 35mm f1.4 lens and its performance is excellent to the extent I sold my Nikon 35mm saving a good few pounds in the deal . If these lenses are labeled in the new ART series by sigma I would expect good things

4 months ago |Specs for these lenses look identical to old ones, a telephone call to Sigma earlier today informed me that they are identical internally as the previous model, only the body has been changed, which I believe is now metal, not plastic.

4 months ago |that was cool that someone told you such info over the phone or you could just be a lying BS merchant mmmm wonder which is right lol

4 months ago |I can only relate what I was told by Sigma staff. I made the call as I am interested in these lenses. So there are a couple of possibilities; one, Sigma want to sell off all old stock quickly, so they inform a caller that ‘there is no difference’; or two, he was telling the truth. From past experience of dealing with Sigma I tend to accept the second option. So untill I see an official statement or press release I am happy with what I was told.

4 months ago |I do hope they took care of the slower startup issue. When the Sigma 19 and 30 mm are attached, the camera apparently takes longer until it’s ready.
Are firmware updates for lenses other than the Panasonic/Olympus ones possible?
Matt
4 months ago |Well, at least from someone on DPreview m4/3 forums, apparently Sigma Sweden (I think it was Sweden, one of the Nordic countries IIRC) had a firmware update that DID fix the slow startup on the Sigma 30mm. The owner managed to score the firmware from Sigma and loaded it up (Panasonic camera) and it worked. I think the original startup time was something like 2.5s or something and it reduced it to something like 1.2s. He said it seemed a little slower than other lenses for startup, but nothing like it had been.
So if that is the case, I’d be a little suprised if Sigma hasn’t taken care of the slow startup times with the new lenses. I hope so. I had owned the 30mm for awhile and liked it, but decided I need the PL25 more (between speed, slightly better quality and better FL for me). I am really interested in the 60/2.8 if the price and quality are right…but I know the slow start up times are going to bug me if they are still present.

4 months ago |Unless you are in the habit of switching camera off after every shot, surely the start up thing is not realy an issue. As for myself, I switch the camera on as soon as I’m out on a shoot, so that does not become an issue, same if I change lenses while on a shoot.
tim
4 months ago |the startup-delay is also an issue when the camera goes to sleep (not just when you switch it off)
You get the same delay when you wake the camera from sleep. (which is not great at all)

4 months ago |19mm from Sigma was all the time the average kid – I wonder if that changed.
30mm was stellar performer even before (named best NEX lens) so looking at new redesign (asph elements and such) I guess SONY NEX system got their probably best ’50mm equivalent’ lens which is super compact.
The only thing missing is the OIS on it – but hey it’s cca 45mm you don’t need it so much – and if it’ll be the same price around £150+/- NEX now has compact/stellar lens and unbeatable price (body+lens) compared to m43.
MFT is just a byproduct for Sigma – none of these focal lengths are interesting, 19 would be but hey – it never was good. And F2.8 on APSC is okeyish, on MFT it sucks (both in DOF and ISO noise).
I might probably grab 60mm for (hall) concert recording on my OM-D as it looks super-compact and I shoot my videos at F2.8 anyway (Oly is soft as baby’s ass wide open), I have been let down by Oly 45mm many times (the bastard won’t focus I don’t know why, might return it).
peevee
4 months ago |What are you talking about, Oly 60 mm is very sharp wide open (let alone for 2 mpix video), weather sealed and useful for macro, and has convenient manual focus scale (useful for video).
veteran of light
4 months ago |Compact/secret Oly 45mm softies at F1.8-2.0 (2.2 stars gasping and 100% better at F2.8).
I don’t have 60mm as it is too big (you get thrown out with such a lens in a hall concert where recording is strictly prohibited). I do agree 60mm Oly is stellar.

4 months ago |Compared to what do you consider the 60mm large it comfortably fits in a trouser pocket
MarcoSartoriPhoto
4 months ago |I tried Zuiko 60mm for an afternoon. It’s a good lens, definetly worth its price. For portrait I prefer 75mm, I find it’s “clearer”. As if glass was more transparent, I don’t know if I sound an idiot or someone understands what I mean.
Anyway, I would buy it if I’d be more into macro photography (not now), but since I already have stellar 75mm I use this last in theaters. Consider that Zuiko 60mm is slightly smaller than the OMD Em5 kit lens, and it’s incredibly light. I was really surprised how light it is. And it’s black, quite useful if shooting were it’s not allowed..

4 months ago |Regarding 19 vs 30 – on m43, with APS-C corners cut off, 19 is a little better than 30, in both sharpness and CA. If 30 was named the best lens for NEX, it only says abobut the sorry state of NEX system.
peevee
4 months ago |I think some rogue product manager is at work at Sigma, trying to prove you cannot make money with lenses for m43. It should work great for him if they continue to make lenses nobody needs.

4 months ago |I just bought the 199 two/fer package and I like the lenses as they are. In my opinion they look better than the new ones and for sure are cheaper. I put them on a pair of black EP-2 bodies and they look cool with real workable, for me, focal lengths. Just want to say I am happy with the purchase and thanks for the heads up as to the deal.

4 months ago |You seem unaware of how this thing with dof, aperture and angle of view works, since you seem unaware that those f2.8 lenses from the 50s that you are talking about were being used on 135 format cameras and give about the same dof as an f1.4 lens that gives the same angle of viewon a 4/3″ format. Hence, if that 2.8 was fine and didn’t give too shallow dof, then neither will an f1.4 lens on mft.
Oh, and I have various f1.4 and even 1.2 lenses from the 50s and 60s. Looks like thefe was some need for it afterall.
