New Panasonic GH2 reviews and DPreview studio shots (+Amazon says in Stock on March 8)
Reviews
DPreview added the studio comparison samples which usually means that they will soon publish the final GH2 review. Have fun by comparing the GH2 results with other cameras. Dpreview also added GF1 downloadeable raw files for all ISOs, for comparison against the GF2.
Digitalcamerareview tested the Panasonic GH2: “The Panasonic GH2 surpasses the quality and performance of a point-and-shoot and just about every entry-level DSLR on the market. A high quality – though not perfect – kit lens, and an excellent 16 megapixel sensor and processing engine help the GH2 succeed. There’s a touchscreen for those who want it and a familiar array of controls for those who don’t. Right now, it’s safe to say that there’s nothing else like it.” The final rating is 4.5/5 points.
A short GH2 test at Outbackphoto.
Black GH2 finally in US
The GH2 is still out of Stock in all US online stores. In those months we only saw a few Silver GH2 in Stock here and there. Now Amazon updated the availability status for the Black GH2+14-140mm kit (Click here). They say it will be in Stock on March 8, 2011.
Click those direct links to check price and availability: Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.

2 years ago |Let’s hope that they get some 14-42s as well. They have upgraded me to next day air so I would finally have mine on the 9th after a 5 month wait.

2 years ago |FIVE MONTHS!! Who did you order from, HMR?
I was counting on 5 weeks, but will post what happens.
Look forward to the final DPreview. Surprised Imaging-Resource has not done something more detailed than the preliminary review from last September.

Anyway flawed or not, I find the results even in Raw pretty good for a mFT sensor. The new sensor does actually improve the effective resolution in terms of details. Maybe, there is no benefit at low ISO but when you climb up… the per pixel noise hasn’t changed much, but overall, I believe there’s a better amount of details.

2 years ago |When I see the results of the GH2 at ISO 6400, I hardly understand why Olympus didn’t incorporate this sensor in the E-5 Body…
If you compare E-PL2 and GF-2 even Raw noise level, clearly Olympus has the edge in term of noise management. Be it an under the hood noise reduction or any other kind of tweaks. But I see these tests, the GH-2, with good glass in front, potentially has (In terms of NR at least) the edge on the E-5…
I just don’t get it… I know it has been discussed a 1000 times and Oly is just not committed to the FT anymore… (at least I think) But still.
Just beyond my understanding…

2 years ago |Olympus didn’t incorporate that sensor in the E-5 because PANASONIC WOULDN’T LET THEM. It stuns me how often people overlook this issue and criticize Olympus for it.

2 years ago |Do you have a link to the official source for this information? I’ve heard it said around various fora, but I’ve never found the place where someone from Olympus or Panasonic outright said “Olympus asked for the GH2 sensor and Panasonic refused”.

2 years ago |I think a part of why the EPL-2 has a edge over the GF2 is the fact that the ISO’s don’t line up. For example at ISO 1600 the GF2 is at 1/1000th of a sec and the EPL2 is at 1/640th in DPReview sample studio photos. Looks like GF2 is over ratting, EPL2 is Underrating and GH2 is rating just about perfect. http://front1.dxomark.com/index.php/Camera-Sensor/Compare/Compare-sensors/(appareil1)/687|0/(appareil2)/677|0/(appareil3)/684|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Olympus/(brand2)/Panasonic/(brand3)/Panasonic

2 years ago |Unless I have missed something all the mFT product before the GH2 used the same sensor, and this is also what the E-5 would use. There is a difference in the exit angle of the light from the lens. The focus registration distance on the E-5 is 38.7mm vs 20mm for mFT – therefore the light is hitting te sensor more directly on a Four Thirds camera than on a mFT camera, and this may reduce noise at high ISO, so processing differences
may not be the only reason for apparently higher IQ from the E-5.

2 years ago |Firstly I think anyone can grasp that Panasonic has every right to use technology that they develop in anyway they choose. And if they choose to use it to differentiate themselves from Olympus it is their choice.
Secondly the GH1/2 sensor is physcally bigger than the 12mgp sensor. It could also be that to use that sensor in a mirrored camera they might have had to redesign their IBIS to accomodate the larger size but Olympus isn’t saying.
I get tired too of this criticism of Panasonic from Oly users.

2 years ago |Elf, I agree with you, and I was not necessarily criticizing Panny for that decision. I get tired of all the Oly users whining about the 4-year-old sensors and “Why didn’t they use the GH1/GH2 sensor in the new model?” It is pretty common knowledge that there was an exclusivity agreement in place (which may or may not still be the case) and Oly was limited to Panasonic sensors. And no, I can’t point to positive proof that Panny refused the Olympus request, but does anyone think that either company would publicly admit to it? It would make them both look bad, for different reasons.
