New Panasonic GH2 hack updated!

Vitaly Kiselev just updated the Ptool to version 3.62d. You can read more about that version at Personal-view (Click here). It pushed the GH2 bitrates to >100Mbps!
Those are the chnages from the previous version (written by Vitaly):
“- Improved bitrate patches
– Improved GOP patches.
– Improved MJPEG size patches.
– Added quantizer patches.
– Added few other encoder related patches.
– Few fixes, including 24L behaviour.”
US deal Reminder: There is a $55 price drop on the GH2 with 14-42mm kit lens on Amazon (Click here). Other price and kits check at Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.

Not even Vitaly, nor the GH2 can patch up that Tea Party…

10 months ago |Well done! Let’s see how hacked GH2 completes with Sony NEX-7/A77 in terms of video quality!

10 months ago |It is important to recognize that the GH2 has b-frames for 1080p and 1080i video and can have b-frames for 720p video with the hack. That means that extremely high bit rates and very low GOPs are no longer necessary.
100 mb/sec on a GH2 is wasting bandwidth. There will be no difference between 100+ mb/sec and approximately 50 mb/sec.
With the latest patch you can achieve unmatched results at the default settings of 42 mb/sec for 1080p and 720p.
It is also important to realize that the newest patch adds quantizer settings that will increase the minimum bit rate for less detailed scenes. This is critical because scenes without much movement and with lower ISOs rarely get above 10-12 mb/sec with the original firmware. Now all scenes record at the same bit rate regardless of whether the camera thinks it is necessary or not.
Here is an example of videos that were shot with the older hack but they still never went above 12 mb/sec. Imagine what the new hack could do?

I’ve been shooting some video tests using the latest hack for the GH2 to determine if gradient banding artifacts are reduced compared to the original firmware. As you know, the GH1 & GH2 tend to record banding in areas of smooth color, such as blue sky, blank light-colored walls, sometimes on skin, etc.
I haven’t finished my tests yet, but I’m wondering if you’ve seen any improvement in this regard, and if so, what combination of hack software settings did you use?
(I’m curious if the new quantizer settings might prove helpful in reducing banding in gradients?)
Thanks in advance.

9 months ago |Did you ever get a clear answer about the gradient artifacting? I had that problem before the hack, I’m about to test the 42mbps hack today. Hopefully getting rid of all that banding.

10 months ago |Is it blocky because of YT or was it originally blocky?
Is that the benefit?
mpgxsvcd
10 months ago |If you are playing it at 1080p then it should not be blocky. The original definitely was not blocky.

10 months ago |OFC it’s blocky. Better to post vimeo link where the original can be downloaded. Quite odd to discuss compression on youtube compressed video. lolz.
Nice clouds btw:)
I’d like to see comparison of 2 frames with heavy motion like trees in wind with panning or waterfall with splashing water using fast shutter speed. Thats what’s motion heavy.

What settings would you recommend (bitrate, quantizer, group of pictures, etc) for version 3.62d for the best quality/bitrate ratio?
mpgxsvcd
10 months ago |Currently I am using 42 mb/sec for both 1080p and 720p. I use quant = 2 for 720p and quant = 3 for 1080p. No other changes except for maybe GOP = 12 for 720p if I really feel lucky.

10 months ago |Thanks. 42000000 for high and low for both 1080p and 720p or does the low need to be 70-75% of the high 42000000 value?
mpgxsvcd
10 months ago |Low should be between 26 mb/sec and 35 mb/sec depending on what you want “Low” to do. For me I need “Low” to be 100% reliable with my very slow but very useful Eye-Fi wireless Class 6 SD card.

10 months ago |The 20mm f1.7 is optically better than 14-42mm kit zoom. If you don’t need zoom and you like that angle of view, definitely go for this great pancake.

@fm
Don’t mess around, just buy Class 10 SD Cards. Prices have dropped quite a bit.
Adorama has a deal on 2 SanDisk 32GB SDHC Extreme (30MB/sec) for $120!
