New Panasonic 14-42mm X lens in Stock in Europe and Asia.

In my modest opinion this is a tiny little jewel of a lens. And as you know I am not often prising Panasonic products (See the not so exciting GX1 camera). The real advantage of the m43 system over other systems is the quality-size aspect. And that zoom (yes zoom!) lens actually rises the bar on a level neither Sony nor Nikon couldn’t reach yet. And in these days the lens is getting in Stock in most European and Japanese stores. it’s worth a news here on 43rumors. The stores having it in Stock are Amazon DE, Amazon UK, Amazon FR, Amazon JP and eBay
(Click on the shop names). Anyway, no matter where you buy it, the important thing is that Panasonic learns that these are the kind of products we want to see coming from them!

7 months ago |Are there any news on the oof problem towards the 42mm which might be caused by the ois ?

7 months ago |The X 45-175mm seems to have the same problem. A few weeks ago Panasonic Netherlands told me to regularly check the page with firmware updates; no firmware updates are available as yet, neither for the X 14-42mm nor the X 45-175mm.

7 months ago |I hope someone can help me with this question: Does this lens work with the GH2 just like the old kit (non-X) lens?
Anonymous
7 months ago |Yes, it works. I believe there was a firmware upgrade for adding some improved controls of the lens.

7 months ago |On DPreview forums, it has been widely reported that the X lenses are OOF at shutter speed of around 1/160 – 1/200 due to the shutter vibration interfering with the OIS (speculation of root cause). Panasonic UK has already said that it can recreate the issue and is looking into it.

7 months ago |Well I hope it’s just an early production issue, although even that is awfully embarrassing on launch for Panny’s premium line. But we have to wait and see – except it might be better not to get the X lens kit GX1 yet, hmph.

7 months ago |I think there is a general issue with shutter vibration and long lenses on Panny mft cameras. I notice it on the 100-300. Shutter vibration becomes a big factor with lighter lens/bodies and smaller grips. Firmware may help but the best solution will be electronic shutters which have the added benefit of silent operation.

All the reports Ive read say its very soft at the long end.
So £350 for a lens thats softer than a £75 kit lens????
Thats no jewel to me….

7 months ago |Please Panasonic: lay off the red paint! There’s just too much of it on this lens. If you see this lens on the GX1, it totally disturbs the design.
The red X is still OK (maybe you can integrate it in the LumiX brand name?), but all the other print: Power OIS, HD. And while you’re at it: go easy on the print in general: ‘Nano Surface Coating’ does not need to be printed on the lens. Just put all that stuff on the box, because that’s what people see when they’re interested to get it.
Oh, and to finish my rant: the zoom rocker’s mount looks like a giant wart on the lens barrel. There must be a more elegant solution than this…
Other than that, I’m quite impressed with the lens in terms of functionality. I think that ultimately, this will be the standard kit lens for any Lumix MFT camera (at the normal kit zoom premium). That will be a very unique feature of the Lumix line and help them sell many more cameras.

7 months ago |Looks like a nice lens. After getting rid of my 30D and lenses, the lensi miss the most is my Tokina Professional 12-24 f/4, and not a fisheye. I wish there was a 7mm non fisheye that doesn’t cost as much as that 900 dollar one.

7 months ago |Am I the only one who hates this “electronic” zooming via buttons? For me this lens is a total no go. With my compact LX3, I hardly zoom because it just doesn’t feel natural and is imprecise to handle. Why no zoom ring as we can see on the Fuji X10?

I i just bought the olympus 14-35 f2 (still on the box),
I hesitate to sell it for the combo, if they are 2,8 and Auto focus well on GH2 video…
