New GX1 tests roundup.
Cameralabs (Click here) posted a set of new GX1 image and video samples.
The GX1 is now shipping in Asia and more reviews and tests are coming in:
Focus Numerique (Click here) posted a GX1 ISO test. In short, the GX1 is better than the E-P3 but not as good as the NEX-5n. Compared to the G3, it seems that the GX1 noise is more smooth at high sensitivities.
First GX1 unboxing pictures at Mobile01 (Click here and than on the green links!).
A hungarian GX1 review at Prohardver (Click here).
Preorders search links: Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.

6 months ago |Man i hate how good that small Nikon 1 sensor performs. And i hate how bad the E-P3 is for such a great camera. GX1′s noise reduction is the most horrible i’ve ever seen, but RAW may fix that. Still not one camera for me that has it all. Tho fuji could possibly change that soon.

6 months ago |What I find strange with the Nikon 1 sensor is that the image quality degrades so slowly as the ISO increases. Because at low ISO its performance is honestly very poor (compare noise and resolution at ISO 200 against the E-P3). But then as the ISO speed goes up, the image quality remains very stable, which I find quite strange.
Still, I’m not sure that trading high ISO performance for low ISO is such a good deal, so as bad as the E-P3 sensor might be at high ISO, I’d still buy it instead of the Nikon 1.

6 months ago |G3 still looks like the best m43 overall, and APS-C is at least a stop better. I really wish Olympus would improve their sensor to at least G3 levels.

Why the heck is some internet-compressed video an example of camera output? This happens all the time, and it’s nothing more than filler, IMO. Great. You got a latte. Congrats, but it tells me nothing about the camera, or even the lens for that matter.

Good point. But at least the original file is available if you want it….and are a registered member of Vimeo, whatever that entails!

6 months ago |I like Gordon Laing’s site, but I would like to make 2 comments on his review here.
(1) He states when comparing the GX1 to the E-P3 that the E-P3 is superior to the GX1 using un-stabilised lenses because it has IBIS. “This may not be a big deal for stills, but for video it can be a issue.” Wrong on both sides of that sentence. It is a big deal for stills, because your lens is stabilised on the E-P3, not on the GX1. And it makes no difference for video, because the IBIS is for stills only! I’m sure a few hundred people will correct me if I’m wrong….
(2) I’m unable to register for his forums because I use gmail! C’mon Gordon, get with the times! I am NOT going to get myself another e-mail address simply to join your forum. Gmail is not a minor player!
Cheers, Tom

6 months ago |Why post a statement that IBIS is not an issue for video when you state several hundred will correct you if you are wrong? If you have ever tried to video tape without IS then you will realize just how wrong you are. Otherwise you are assuming that the EP3 buyer must be purchasing Pany OIS lenses if intending to do any video or shooting only from a tripod?
As for stills the 20mm/1.7 and 14/2.8 Pany lenses are already fast enough in case of former and wa in case of latter that IS is not required. Fewer people are willing to shoot with legacy lenses given lack of AF etc. At any rate the GX1 or G3 for that matter is at least 1 stop better high ISO performance than the EP3 so one can set a higher shutter speed in the first place.

6 months ago |I own an E-PL1, and have used it for hand held video many times, both with IS on and off. I’ve also used a G2 for a short time, with the OIS kit lens. The difference is night and day. I am no videographer, but preferred the footage on the PEN without IBIS, and WAY preferred the G2 footage, using OIS. The IBIS footage tended to make viewers seasick!
Here’s a link explaining what is going on with the PENs:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympusepm1/page10.asp
The reason I put a disclaimer in my statement above was because I hadn’t researched the issue to any great extent: only enough to satisfy myself, and I couldn’t be bothered referencing my statement. Happier now?
So, you are correct, the IBIS does do something for video. IMO it makes it worse, but YMMV. If I was serious about video and wanted to use my PEN, I would use either a tripod or an optically stabilised lens from Panasonic.
And the IBIS makes a significant difference for un-stabilised lenses. Do you need that referenced too? Have you tried a 200mm legacy lens on a PEN, handheld, with and without IBIS? The link I gave above claims a 3 stop improvement. All I can say is that it does make a significant difference in my experience, once I remembered to set the right focal length. Whoops!.

6 months ago |DonTom is referring to the fact that Oly IBIS doesn’t work for video. So his point is valid.

6 months ago |Oly IBIS doesn’t work during video shooting. I think that’s what DonTom is trying to say??? So, IBIS in an Oly is irrelevant, because it can’t help video. Oly does do software stabilization during video, but that can lead to some freaky output (google the EMP1 IS video issues).
So, IBIS is useful for stills, but not video. Oly does give SW stabilization during video, but it crops the frame and creates odd effects.

6 months ago |@WT21, yes that was what I was trying to say. Hopefully got it covered now. My turn to feel cranky, but have vented now. And usually I agree with everything Safaridon has to say!
I love that with a PEN, you can have OIS or IBIS, if you can be bothered buying a stabilised Panasonic lens. Choice is good.

6 months ago |That’s what I love about IBIS too… choice. If the presence of IBIS made it impossible to use OIS, then there would be a very difficult choice to be made. But Oly’s solution allows you to use OIS in every situation that Panny can, and IBIS in any situation that they can’t. Seems simple enough to understand – and yes, I use it and appreciate it with my 50mm 1.8 and Panny 20mm 1.7 as well.
That said, I am really liking the looks of the GX1. I haven’t seen on in the flesh but it does appear to be very well built. The news that it has better “quality” pictures than the E-P3 has got my interest up as well. It sounds like they haven’t actually compared the two cameras head to head yet, but if the GX1 has better contrast and dynamic range – it is a definite win for Panasonic. Good news for us all.

I bet it will also make those great outdoors huge MB/min 1080p files with murky nature details and terrible compression artifacts to.
Hell, but all is forgiven if tit will have 60p, right? Right…
