(UDPATED: 2 GH3 in Stock.) New GX1 deal at Samys.

While I got reliable info about the release of the new GF and G successors in Spring I still have no reliable info about the next generation GX camera. Wondering what Panasonic has in his mind. That said the current GX1 model is now available with the X pancake zoom for $649 at Samys (Click here) or via Samys at Amazon (Click here). There are also a few acutions one eBay where you can get the Silver kit for $599 (Click here).
UPDATE: Two Gh3 in Stock for the regular price at 39mm (Click here).

With G5 that serie became as big as GH2. I think they should go with G3 styling…

4 months ago |I think is hard now for Pana to come out something to impress us . As aware , the fullframe NEX & Fuji Super X Pro likely to make it’s appearance in 2013 , Pana really need something very very special to win back it’s fans . Within mFT , we got OMD pro to come too .
The GX series regarded as Pana , another highend rangefinder series face a tough time .
I prefer Pana to hold the GX2 if they really can’t impress with it .

4 months ago |Yun, your comments are consistently funny. Panasonic is doing fine, the first batch of gh3 sold out in pre order (a success for any launch) and they go out of stock minutes after being placed in stock. No nex has ever been so requested that its out of stock. The nex full frame? It’s already been proven that the e mount would vignette like crazy, and they can’t even make lenses for the sensor size they currently have are you gonna wait 4 mote years for them to make lenses?. The super Fuji? The raw files look like paintings even on the capture one update. I can’t even get 700$ for a slightly used x pro. M4/3s has nothing to be nervous about.

4 months ago |So you want everything the gh3 has, with a better view finder, a new prime, and for a lower price?
I want a 10,000$ ferrarri

4 months ago |No man, we are not talking quality stuff here, we are talking low end stuff. Gross usability mistakes and a puny sensor to save money don’t put these cameras in the top end shelf. Those prices are outrageous.

4 months ago |How will it have “everything the GH3 has”? Mostly just the sensor and shutter upgrades so people spending their next $1000 in 2013/14 with Panasonic aren’t stuck with 2009/10 level tech. The GX1 body can stay mostly the same.
Better viewfinder is arguable. Some might say the GH3 OLED VF is better. I prefer the EPSON LCD VFs. It might even be cheaper to source than the OLEDs.
Lower price because it’s a different market and lower set of features. GF1 was priced lower than GH1/2. Differences between a possible GX2 compared to GH3 : no weathersealing, fixed screen, less controls, no high end video options, no magnesium alloy body, no internal heatsinking, smaller less capacity battery etc. Yeah, we’re really after a Ferrari.
You are just way too defensive of Panasonic. There are other people here who buy Panasonic and want the system to do better too. Not everyone wants or needs a GH3. GF, GX and G users shouldn’t be funding the GH R&D and its users with constant purchases of recycled parts, especially sensors from 2009/10. There’s many people still using a GF1 who are looking for a proper upgrade that’s not going to drop to $400 value in 6 months because of uncompetitive features.

4 months ago |No completely “new prime” is needed either. Panasonic just has to remanufacture the lens to bring its AF on par with the P14 and PL25. No other features are needed IMO. It needs to remain a simple, high quality, affordable pancake lens. Several other brands update their lenses with improved features while still keeping the older lens on the market for a lower cost. Panasonic would actually make more money if they did this.

4 months ago |GF1 with either a 20 f/1.7 or 14-45 f/3.5-5.6 had an RRP of $899 when it was announced in September 2009. Surely, four years on, we can get something similar, and with today’s tech? Competition and economies of scale drives down the cost of products to the consumer. Or maybe you always want to pay inflated prices? My $999 RRP for a possible GX2 is a reasonable and conservative guess. I don’t see how you think the price is low.
Let’s guess that that a GX2 with EVF body cost is $750-800. The 20 f/1.7 retails for $350. A Mk II with improved AF should cost the same. (Just like Olympus updating its kit zooms to MSC and II R for improved AF when E-P2/3 was launched, replacing the older zooms bundled with E-P1/2 and E-PL1.) So GX2 with EVF body + 20 f/1.7 Mk II = $1100-1150. Minus the manufacturer subsidising a discount when purchased as a retail kit. -$200 sounds reasonable. So $900-950 RRP.
This would be a great counter to the Sony NEX-6 with its 16-50 PZ for $999. Given the choice, I would get the GX2 I have described over the NEX-6 with PZ or even with their 35 f/1.8 anyday. But it can only compete against APS-C with the new sensor tech. Olympus has already realised this. That’s why even their lowest rank current model E-PM2 has their best sensor available. It’s a good strategic move for m4/3.
