New G5 tests (and release delayed at BHphoto).
BHphoto just postponed the G5 release to August 20th (before it was August 10th).
While we have to wait one month to see the new GH3 let’s see what the GH2.5 (so named by a Panasonic manager) can do
Trustedreviews posted the full G5 review: “Build quality is very good, the touch screen functionality makes it a fun and intuitive camera to use and overall image quality also impresses. Add to this the camera’s fast AF performance, flexible vari-angle screen and useful 6fps burst speed and the G5 adds up to a tempting package.”
Focus Numerique (Translation here) posted the full ISO test. The camera easily beats the Olympus E-P3 although it can’t catch up with the Sony NEX-5n.
Meantime the GH2 got the lowest price ever on Amazon (Click here) and at the moment of posting this the 12-35mm X lens is also back in Stock (Click here).

10 months ago |It is a fun idea that you could place an order for something without ever reading a single review or even knowing what changed since the last model. I have a friend who does this with Apple products, and it seems to work.

10 months ago |We know even w/o reviews that the G5 is certainly better than the G3 in almost every aspects. The question is how big these differences are.

10 months ago |I couldn’t find any details on whether the G5 has full manual control in video mode. Does anyone know?

10 months ago |Here is the definitive answer on whether the G5 does manual movie control.
It does not do manual movie control. PERIOD.
The part where the manual says the G5 records “Normal motion picture” for the PASM modes means that it reverts to Full Auto mode with Auto or Intelligent ISO during movies.
This is found on page 54 of the 8.2 megabyte manual. Enter DMCG5 and then search on the link below.

10 months ago |I don’t understand why Panasonic insists on crippling these cameras by simply disabling manual controls in video mode. Direct competitors have offered those controls for some time now and even compacts these days can do what this camera can’t, just because of a disabled feature in the firmware. They sure updated the video capabilities, but who can really take advantage of them when you have virtually no control?
This whole situation between Olympus and Panasonic is really weird anyway. The other company has an edge in video quality, but has no IBIS nor manual controls. Olympus on the other hand has an edge in still quality, but offers IBIS and manual controls for video.

10 months ago |I wish the GH2 had this feature that the G5 has.
Detects orientation of camera (Direction Detection Function)

10 months ago |This is tempting, but after owning a G2 and GH2 I think I’ll wait for the GH3 and see what sort of magic Panasonic is able to deliver in that body.

10 months ago |Does anybody know whether or not they’ve saddled this camera with the 29 minute video recording limit?
If so, then this is a serious step in the wrong direction for Panasonic, as older cameras (at least those outside of EU) weren’t crippled in this manner.
I was seriously considering getting one of these, but if it has the recording limit (coupled with no control in video mode), I will pass…
