I was told that Loreo will soon have their Loreo 3D lens available for MicroFourThirds cameras!
UPDATE: The 3D Lens for FourThirds mount is already available since months.

Text from their website: “The new subframe 3D Lens in a Cap 9005 (patent pending), in development since 2007, is a sports and portrait 3D lens. The lens has a focal length of 40mm and a stereo base of (interocular distance) of 90mm.” … “On Olympus and Panasonic Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds digital SLR cameras, the 2:1 FOV crop factor brings the effective focal length to 80mm on the vertical side of the image frame, making it a telephoto 3D lens. With a pair of 1.45x converters, the effective focal length on 4:3 format units becomes 116mm. The wide image pitch (90mm) allows excellent 3D photographs to be taken from 5 meters or more away.

The 3D effect: “The 3D effect is achieved by transposing two images through a matched pair of focusing lenses and a reflector housing with four mirrors. Beam splitters designed in the 1960s for SLR cameras have a pronounced keystone effect. The new 3D Lens in a Cap 9005 eliminates the keystone effect. It is a self-contained, integrated mirror assembly and lens system that mounts directly onto the camera body and does not need any supporting lens. This means that it does not work with SLRs which do not have interchangeable lenses, such as the Olympus E10, E20 series of digital cameras.

The 3D Lens in a Cap 9005 takes full advantage of the accurate viewing, exposure control and wide range of shutter speeds that SLRs possess. Excellent print and digital 3D images can be produced with this lightweight 3D Lens. Processed 3D prints are ready for viewing with Loreo Deluxe or Lite 3D Viewers. They can also be viewed on computer screens with a Loreo Pixi 3D Viewer.

      The owner of the website contacted me and said that they just launched the new lens for MicroFourThirds. the FourThirds 3D lens is already available since a lot of time. So the news is that the now have also the new MFT 3D lens 🙂
      P.S.: We are not covering m43 only but to be honest…there is no rumor and news in this weeks 🙁

    The “Cap 9005”, which now has a micro 4/3rds mount, is interesting because it has a Parallax Compensation.

    Parallax Compensation.
    “The 3D Lens in a Cap 9005 has a focus coupled Parallax Compensation system. When the lens is focused on a subject at a given distance, the image pitch is automatically adjusted within the unit itself to suit the object distance. This works from 1.5m to infinity. The adjustment of the relative positions of the image pair can be viewed in the viewfinder, or with Live View in modern digital SLR cameras. Once a user learns how to use the lens, focusing can actually be done by parallax compensation alone. When the subject appears in the same relative position in both the left and right image in the viewfinder, it will automatically be in focus. “

    Viewing with out viewer
    I have always loved toying with 3D ever since I used to look at aerial surveillance photographs back in the early 70’s. After a little practice it was possible to look at the photographs without a viewer. Most people would find it possible, with a little time staring “far off” into space, to resolve the dual image prints on 5×7 prints fairly easily with no viewer, and 8×10 prints with a little more effort, although I would guess that 25% of the people trying to resolve a double 8×10 print will never be able to see these larger pictures in 3d with out a viewer. Dual printed images at 8×10 inch have matched focus points that is just a little bit wider than many peoples “inter ocular distance”.
    If you scroll down the web page ( http://www.loreo.com/pages/products/loreo_3dlenscap9005.html ), there are some pictures of some attractive girls, which on my monitor is close to an 8×10 print. Some of you may be able to stare “straight ahead” long enough and eventually the two images will begin to merge into one, with two “side” pictures. When merger happens, the girls will be seen in 3D. Fun.

    If you are having a hard time getting the near 8×10 image resolved, try copying the image and post in into a “Word” document text box. Once posted in a text box you can scale down the image and the smaller size will be much easier to resolve.
    If you leave some 5×7 prints out for public viewing, the double image prints always attract attention.

    Some people can use the “Cross eyed technique”, which allows one to look at larger prints. This technique gives me a headache and I have a hard time “looking around” the photograph.

    I just don’t understand why would anyone use this contraption on digital cameras, especially those with 4:3 aspect ratio. This is a beam-splitter which splits the image into two almost similar halves. Imagine how narrow this will be when captured on the 4:3 sensors. Viewing the captured images on LCDs and TVs will not produce 3D effect. You need to have a viewer which allows each eye to view one half of the image. Why not just shoot slide film for stereo viewing? Nothing beats viewing slides on a binocular-like viewer. I am just flabbergasted with the fetish with everything digital. Sod it!

    You do have a point that the image quality of the print as a whole is somewhat less, however offsetting this loss is the fact that twice as much information is being stored on the print of the same object. Print quality goes down, information density goes up.

    You now have information of what the “left” and “right” sides of the object looks like, as well as a doubling up of common visual information.

    It is just fun looking at things in 3 D.

    Did you try and make a 5×7 sized copies of the images made available from the website and see if you could resolve the 3 D image without a viewer? Not everyone has the patience or skill to do this, but most can. The viewer does make it much easier to resolve the 3D image.

    This thing is kind of interesting. In digital, people go to great lengths buying two cameras and a double mount bracket and sicronizing them. This is a lot of work, this lens, all be it very limited to one focal length, lets some know if they are even interested in this style of photography.

    How much does it cost?

    The cross eyed technique is very easy, the trick is to focus through you monitor. Imagine the image to be 6 inches behind your screen or print and try to focus your eye there. Then move you focal point forward and back (with eyes or just bob your head) the image will come in. The images on the website are ok, but not as sharp as others with $1000 setups.

    Parallel vs Cross-eyed

    There are two ways to see in 3D with out a viewer with dual image photographs. This web page gives a good illustration of the two methods.

    Notice that in the cross eyed technique the right eye is looking at the image on the left side of the picture and the right eye is looking at the image on the left side of the picture, where as in parallel viewing the left image is for the left eye and the right image is for the right.

    The advantage of the cross eyed technique is that it allows the viewing of larger images in 3 D, the disadvantage is that the learning curve to be able to “look around” this kind of image is long, and gives me headaches. For example if you want to look up at the left side of the photograph your right and left eyes would have to maintain the proper angle of crossing while preserving the proper focous, a not so easy task.

    The split image technique works with video.

    No viewer is required but the Image size on the monitor and viewing distance is important for successful viewing.

    Most people can resolve a 4×6 split image print viewed at arms length with no problem using the parallel technique, so lets start with that image size. Since 4×6 is English unites, we will use American Units of measure, inches and feet.

    At a viewing distance of 2 feet, we can easily resolve a 6 inch wide split image, If we double the viewing distance, the same picture can now be 12 inches wide. Everything is proportional.

    Mathematically this looks like this.

    Viewing distance in Feet = Width of TV in inches / 3.

    I have a 40 inch tv that is about 35 inches wide so a split screen stereo video could be viewed at about 12 feet.

    The picture I would be seeing in 3D would only be halve as wide, or about 17 inches with a “40” inch diagonal measure TV.

    One advantage of longer viewing distances is that the angle of the eyes and the focusing effort of the lens of the eye (accommodation) both impart information to the brain as to spatial information about an objects distance. This information begins to more closely match “reality” with longer viewing distances.

    If I am further away, it is easier to see 3D effect while if I am closer, the 3D effect is intensified, not only because I am closer but the sense of depth increases.

    Caution, prolonged viewing tends to cause a headache, at least for me. Two minutes of viewing seem fine for most and I am sure one could get used to it over time.

    The room should be dark just to avoid altering the viewing focus to “reality” which requires the eyes to change their angle of view.

    I just think 3D is fun.

    This is a new lens in manufacture at Loreo. I have been told by a manufactures rep that it will be available “Soon”.

    (Remember this is a “Rumor Site” so we are dealing with issues that are sometimes not certain. Heck, if things were certain, were why would we need this site?. The future is always uncertain, but it is nice to know what is coming in advance of everyone else.)

    The price of all the lenses at Loreo are inexpensive, less than $200 U.S. I would expect to see the lens similarly priced. (This information was also “leaked” to me by a manufactures rep).

    i’ve had this lens, bought directly from loreo in hong kong, since 16 April. You can see some of the results from my GF1 on my flickr site. The pictures aren’t the greatest, but as i improve with it, i’ll be updating it constantly.

    So this is a proprietary format and can only be viewed with their software or hardware? No thanks. I would like to just be able to put on a memory stick or view to the tv without any conversion.
