Could they make the flash uglier? Because I think there’s potential for outright hideousness. Aside from that, looks ok. Regarding the color schemes, I like the white body, but the mole-skin color patch (beige) is not so good. A grey patch would have been good.
But at least they’re trying to do something new (or retro, rather).
Well, the white sure is “hip” looking. White is “in”, see Leica. I think it looks really good, but I don’t want it.
The silver and black doesn’t look nearly as good?… I’m just not feeling it. that grip looks like a big lump. design wise it just doesn’t work. bad, bad design.
A while back somebody mentioned hoping that somebody would make an after market leather, or other material grip that completes the wrap-around retro grip look most of us really want. it could have an adhesive on one side and I could apply it myself. If this existed, I might consider buying one. 17mm for $100 I like that a lot… how much for the viewfinder? $150? ha ha ha
At least there is a control dial back right. Still begs a question of how it’s going to work if you want to manually focus and, say, use aperture priority.
Slight concern that this is too big for the point and shoot crowd and not controllable enough for the more advanced used….
I disagree on the bad design remark. I’m tired of the general SLR/p&s designs that make every single camera look like each other. I still shoot with my Pen FT all the time and you should see people’s eyes when i take the lens off and replace it with another. This is a sharp looking camera that will sure bring back some of the “good old days” of Olympus, as long as the photo quality compares to the other in this class it will be a big seller. I will pre-order the silver/black one the day it becomes available, just need a FT adapter now.
I hope they do a version with a red patch, like Apple has their “edition red” iPods. The 1960s were not beige! Beige is more of a 1970s color. If I’m going to go retro — and I probably will! — I want it to be a fun color, not beige!
The beige/tan patch clearly is to color-coordinate with the natural-leather color of the inner surface of the white leather neckstrap and case. (Talk about attention to styling details…)
why the f*** are you so f***ing interested in how it looks?
it is a box!
what is important is the size and image quality!
to be able to produce better pictures you’re not supposed to use a “stylish” camera but an unobtrusive one.
what I hope to see is a no-shutter camera, totally silent, with at least 3fps raw and 9 frames burst, usable picture at 1600ASA, waterproof/dustproof, etc.
that is what Pen owners were searching and that is what is needed in the market.
if you need to be stylish, take it to jeweler to gold plate it!
misu calm down, all specifications are listed, we care about them of course, but in this case we see visual threat in stagnant interchangeable lens camera market. So this cannot be overlooked like it is not essential. Numbers, always are just numbers – accept them or not to. But apart numbers, you need to touch camera, feel it, that is important too, you will travel with it and look at it every day, not someone else. At least i can not disregard this factor.
You can do customized “skins” that stick onto the camera. I hope this is one of their camera options. We should tell them that this will be a big seller for the E-P1. They have some point and shoot Olympus cameras on there that can be customized by “skinning” them.
Thanks for posting the nice new photos of the camera. I’m very excited about the E-P1 as a take everywhere camera with RAW, image stabilization and excellent legacy lens support. Finally, the Panasonic sensors are pleasing to me (the G1 works well for me, and the GH1 sensor seems even nicer).
PS to each their own on looks… I find it uniquely lovely and more importantly the specs + form factor + features appear well thought out.
FT= FourThirds
FT1=probably fake rumor
FT2=rumor from unkown sources
FT3=50% chance it is correct
FT4=rumor from known sources
FT5=almost certainly correct!

White and tan is so hip that it’s featured in today’s post by Paris fashionista Garance Doré: http://www.garancedore.fr/2009/06/15/happiness-is-a-little-white-dress/
