Mike commented on the blog post E-M5 with upcoming 75mm f/1.8 sexiness! 1 month, 1 week ago · View
The only gripe I have with the 45mm’s silver finish is that it comes off. My 12mm of course, looks brand new, even though it’s been banging around in my bag with the 45mm. Actually, I’m going to blame the 12mm for rubbing the finish off the 45mm.
That said, the black finish on [...] -
Mike commented on the blog post New E-M5 asian sound noise test and NEX-7 and GX1 comparison. 1 month, 2 weeks ago · View
I’m assuming that, to make the comparison squares the same size, cropping occurred, and that there’s far fewer pixels to crop out of a µ4/3 shot with a smaller sensor. The NEX would have to win, just on the fact that Sony doesn’t make crap sensors, and that there’s so much more room to crop [...]

Mike commented on the blog post Canon explains why Four Thirds is better than APS-C
2 months, 2 weeks ago · ViewHey I definitely wouldn’t mind, especially if Canon would make a electronically driven EOS to micro 4/3 adapter. Of course, this is all wishful thinking.

Doesn’t in-body IS make for jello? Wouldn’t 5-axis IS produce 5-axis jello?

I sometimes wonder if Olympus isn’t just thinking differently — stills first and foremost. I’m disappointed with the video on my Olympus cameras. But if I shot that much video, I might as well get a Panny. For the longest while, Nikon’s HDSLR stuff lagged behind Canon’s. One can still argue that Nikon has have [...]

Mike commented on the blog post Panasonic 20mm disappears from USA stores because of supply issues (+US deals) 3 months ago · View
I’m not sure what’s up with the US and Panasonic, either. Having spoken to independent camera shops, they say that their Panasonic reps are hinting at some sort of a corporate problem or reorg that’s not helping with the supply. That said, there’s a reasonable supply of 7-14mm lenses right now.
Every last one [...] -

The 20 f/1.7 is a superb pancake. You won’t be disappointed. I have it and the Oly 45 f/1.8, and I find the 20 far more useful — it’s not a telephoto.
I also find it more useful than the 25mm f/1.4 if only for the fact that I can accidentally shove the 20mm [...] -

Although, the 4/3 lenses by and large weren’t QUITE as silly in their focal length ranges. The telephoto ones just went way too far.

I’m so OM-D ready (screw the PEN!).
Grip, flash, bracket, E-M5 body… I’m looking forward to this! I can use my E-P3 as a backup body.

Yeah, I wasn’t bashing the 5D2. I just rarely print beyond A3 and so the point of diminishing returns for me is a little sooner than those that do, at least as far as the 5D goes. I am also one of the few that find the 5D2′s tonal curves somewhat less contrasty than the [...]

Hm, I suppose I’ll concede that. Olympus was still decades late to AF, and didn’t do it till they went digital.

Sigh.
You know, with Olympus, looking over their history, it’s been revolution-evolution-evolution-etc like over a decade or two each time. It’s that Japanese kaizen thing. Often they were even late to market, like the OM-1 and the E-1. It’s admirable that Olympus is trying to make it so there’s a µ4/3 camera for anyone, [...] -
Mike commented on the blog post (FT5) The new camera name is “Olympus OM-D” 4 months, 1 week ago · View
I actually don’t want a FF camera, for what its worth. What made OM lenses small and compact was that they weren’t autofocus. With all the motors, and that large of an image circle, a FF OM-D would be yet another DSLR. Maitani himself said once that a camera maker that simply copies others’ idea [...]

I have an OM-1, OM-10 and an OM-40, all with winders. All are wonderful cameras, with small prime lenses and some pretty nice zooms. But, I don’t use any of them on a regular basis now — gotten lazy with autofocus.
