Sony has been showing huge and increasing losses in recent years and real questions about their ability to innovate and to adopt a coherent, forward-looking strategy. I wonder if they would be interested in the Olympus camera business at all or would only be looking to pluck money from the medical business.

Many of the articles on their continued losses have said it was due to the camera division and continued writeoffs, but the more detailed analyses show that most of the lastest losses were from the writeoffs. I have not seen any detailed breakdowns of where losses in the camera division are occurring. Mirrorless cameras are [...]

I thought that Olympus had to wait for the April stockholders’ meeting to name the new board, chairman, and president? Are these announcements just the proposed lineups or are they official. I know there has been a lot of public comment from the non-Japanese investors in Olympus that the Japanese stockholders and creditors are stacking [...]

Re Sigma lenses, yes they have had a large number of 4/3 lenses, but a fair number of them have already been discontinued in the 4/3 mount, including the reasonably well-regarded 105mm and 150mm macro lenses.

  • As I recall, Olympus has been talking about a truly modular camera for some time, where you select what you want, optical or evf, lenses, body style, etc. I’ll have to look around through my old saved files and links to see if I can find the previous articles.

  • The PDF file that is linked above is a 30 page summary in English rather than the full 178 page report. It is useful that this is available in English now (rather than having to depend on problematic online translators ). It would be more useful if the full 178 page report is made available [...]

Sometimes the poor translation we often blame for bad manuals (etc) is not at fault. A number of years ago a colleague bought a new calculator/clock/alarm… to replace one he had given to Chinese host on a trip. The new one was one of the latest then available in Tokyo. Somehow we got the hourly [...]

  • Michael Hobart commented on the blog post (FT5) Olympus confirms: The VF-3 is coming! (with built-in flash!)   10 months, 1 week ago · View

The English language version of the manual does NOT have any reference to the VF-3 and the illustration on p120 (the system chart) only shows the existing VF-1 and VF-2 viewfinders. Personally I don’t see that there is space in the right-hand picture (the VF-3) to include a flash unit. The AF assist on the [...]
