marsupial2go commented on the blog post Panasonic 12-35mm preorder now at Amazon! Priced $1,299.99! 1 day, 10 hours ago · View
That’s not a bad price for a 24-70/2.8 equivalent, considering that everybody else’s 24-70 is that rate or more. However, the price won’t entice anybody to switch to M43. If it were $699 and people flocked to M43, then Panasonic could disrupt the industry. But Pan isn’t noted for being a risk taker. I have [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post (UPDATED) Panasonic announces new AVC-Ultra (no new m43 camcorder yet) 1 month, 1 week ago · View
I don’t know if there’s a market for M43 P2. A big gripe of the AF100 is the codec does not meet broadcast requirements. Thus, serious shooters have to add an external recorder. However, if the form factor remains small, M43 P2 might be welcomed. It doesn’t have to be 4k…that seems ambitious. P2 has [...]

@Sid… Yup, I’d like to see an M43 camcorder as described in your 3rd paragraph. Ironically, I’ve gotten accustomed to the DSLR-in-cage shooting and can run-n-gun with it and all the attachments. The real camcorder shooters I often share space with when shooting ENG are more mobile because of ergonomics, but by assessing their gear [...]

Professionals must have excellent eyesight and/or use giant field monitors. I question the accuracy of the EVF, especially using a non-Lumix lens with adapter. Both the EVF and LCD are fairly small (on the GH2) to be precise, and they are both electronic representations of what’s being focused on. This is where the Canon 5DMII/III [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post Panasonic says new 12-35mm f/2.8 coming end of June, priced £1,000. 1 month, 2 weeks ago · View
I couldn’t wait for the 12-35/2.8 so I bought a used Olympus 14-54/2.8-3.5 with M43 adapter. I wasn’t initially impressed with the Oly but I often find myself shooting at the long end for portraits. Also, the AF and speed are pretty good. Not much difference between f/2.8 and f/3.5, and the Oly could be [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post (FT4) A second Panasonic product announcement next week? 1 month, 2 weeks ago · View
Thoughtful post, but I don’t really concur. I just spent a month shooting with a GH2 and a cage, with Senn boom and lavs, mixer, etc. Of course the video is stellar, as the GH2 is, and the audio is good because of the attachments. However, as with most HDSLRs, the run-n-gun aspects are simply [...]

I’m interested in the camcorder. It should compete in specs and price with the Sony VG20, be a consumer model, and not be in the pro league with AF100, C300, etc. In fact, it should be better than the VG20 which probably isn’t selling too well, thanks, in part, to its predecessor, the horrible VG10.

marsupial2go commented on the blog post (FT4) Panasonic X lenses will not arrive any time before summer
2 months, 1 week ago · ViewBecause there’s hardly anything else available, I bought the Olympus 14-54ii with Panasonic adapter. Initially I disliked the lens because it’s noisy for video, but if signal-to-noise ratio is high enough, preferably with an external mic, the noise is suppressed. AF, sharpness, zoom range, and wide aperture is good. I found a used one, but [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post For all film users. No more Kodak slide film in future. 2 months, 2 weeks ago · View
In my area, film has been relegated as nostalgic or artistic. There are even periodic Holga competitions. As nostalgia goes, sometimes old things get a reawakening. With the price of film cams, including medium format and pristine vintage Nikons, being so low these days, perhaps the reawakening is on the horizon. We’ll all have to [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post After the GF2 also the GF3 could be hacked soon… 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
According to nofilmschool.com, the new Canon 5D Mark 3 has “ALL-I = ~100mb/12MB” and “IPB = ~33.6mb/4.2MB.” I don’t know if mb is the same as Mbps, but if they are, then Vitaliy’s 32Mbps and 46Mbps on the GF2 is respectable on a $300 body (versus 5DM3 $3400). Nevertheless, Panasonic are the only DSLRs I [...]

marsupial2go commented on the blog post After the GF2 also the GF3 could be hacked soon… 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
The GF2 hack is stellar! There’s probably not enough Vitaliys to do all the requested hacks, but his existence proves that corporations are limiting their own products. Kinda strange to self-limit potential. Business and psychology journalists should do an expose on why companies limit themselves. ‘Seems like a stupid business trend that needs to stop.

marsupial2go commented on the blog post Panasonic 20mm disappears from USA stores because of supply issues (+US deals) 3 months ago · View
Maybe this lens will be one of few products in the Panasonic line that has longevity, e.g., be current and in production for more than two years. Nevertheless, companies don’t like consumers to remain content because they won’t spend. Make it smaller, faster AF, wider f/stop?

marsupial2go commented on the blog post Panasonic: “very high-end model” mirrorless camera coming this year! (…GH3) 3 months, 1 week ago · View
I like reading about new gear, especially these days when there’s so much competition that each company and its divisions need to respond with more products. My world is GH2-based, although a D800 realm seems nice. I accrue revenue (or try to) by doing sound. So shooting video is a secondary gig for people who [...]

Wow, the 14-42 x lens is finally in stock! Now I’ve lost interest. ‘Should have been available when I wanted it. 42mm at f/5.6 is painstakingly slow. I’m investigating other options.

marsupial2go commented on the blog post Is the Canon G1 X the real surprise of the CES show? 3 months, 3 weeks ago · View
Canon would be wise to make this EOS-compatible via adapter, e.g., AF, aperture, etc., thus appealing to the 7D, 5DM2, CS300, etc., crowd to integrate a small body DSLR into their kit.

marsupial2go commented on the blog post (FT3) New Panasonic GF camera coming soon? 3 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I bought the GF2 even when the GF3 was available. I wanted a hotshoe which provides more options. I’m not a big fan of everything-in-one-is-all-you-need. I’m happy with the GF2. I won’t keep it forever, but if Vitaly comes up with that hack maybe it’ll stay part of my kit longer.
