Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post (FT5) Unbelievable: New Olympus OM video quality is better than on the GH2! 3 months, 4 weeks ago · View
It may be easy to suggest a better video camera by paper specifications but it will be hard to top the video quality of the GH2 in real life, especially when even a “mild” hack is applied. The same for the sensor. In early rumors the E-P3 was also said to have a new sensor, [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post First product announcement of the year: Slrmagic 50mm f/0.95 M-mount (tested on GH2). 4 months, 3 weeks ago · View
After the positive experience with the HyperPrime 12/1.6 I am curious about the quality of the 50/0.95. It seems to have it’s own “characteristics” like (but different to) the old Leica Noctilux 50/1.0 (non-ASPH). The circles of confusion and the bokeh do not look as neutral as from the famous Noctilux 50/0.95. I compared the [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post My little SLR magic Hyperprime 12mm f/1.6 field test. 5 months, 3 weeks ago · View
As I had the chance to review already the production version, I think the flare issue was reduced but it is still there. In most cases, it is sufficient now to stop down to F2. The main advantage is that you have an option for an extra portion of light and shallower DOF at F1.6 [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post New SLR magic 12mm f/1.6 reviewed at Photozone 6 months, 1 week ago · View
@Bob: One third the size? How do you compare…? What means AF with a 12mm lens: – If you do not have time for focussing, you will have a good chance to have sharpness from about 3m to infinite even at open aperture (with a circle of confusion of 0.015mm) – If you shoot close [...]

The article shows quite good the potential of that exceptional lens. I would like to add, that it was not possible for me to reproduce the “strange effect” with the blurry center at F8.0 that Photozone mentions in their article. @Miroslav: As shown in my review, Flares at open aperture may still be an issue with [...]

You are right. “unreachable” was ment towards the UWW Zooms.

These are quite different application areas. The 7-14 and 9-18 are more flexible but nearly unusable for moving objects at (low) available light and can produce nearly no DOF effects. The 12/1.6 is more specialized but opens application areas that were unreachable for m4/3 so far.

Due to the long focus throw you can focus VERY accurately in combination with a 10x magnification in the EVF.

The HyperPrime has a distortion of only about 1%, so it does not need electronic correction. A close focus of 15 cm compared to 20 cm is a large difference if you plan to use it for close ups and allows you to play even more with DOF. Another point is that the “manual” focus [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post New Olympus 45mm f/1.8 review at Optyczne. A must have lens! 8 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Aspherical surfaces do not automatically mean that out of focus areas are not smooth. As you can see with current Leica M ASPH as well as with the new DG Summilux, ASPH lenses help to combine perfect sharpness with a neutral out-of-focus rendering.

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post The giant M43 lens battle: Nokton 25mm versus Leica 25mm! 8 months, 2 weeks ago · View
The samples in that article are quite useless in order to compare them. Neither sharpness (center/border) nor bokeh can be judged as expected. The Leica looks less sharp but the focus point does not seem to be the same in the f1.4 example. In fact the Leica has a better resolution. I had both and [...]

If I were Panasonic, I would ask the site to remove these samples. They might be nice snaphots as personal remembrance for that event but they are way too unprofessional to show the potential of these lenses.

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post (FT2) Hot (false?) rumor: Panasonic to buy Olympus imaging division??? 8 months, 4 weeks ago · View
So far I thought positive about having two players in one system. But due to the sensor restrictions of Olympus, it was not really competition. It gave us some redundant lenses with still quite high prices. In order to survive in the upcoming competition with Sony and may be Canon & Nikon (when they start [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post Leica 25mm now shipping to Europe (+Stock on eBay + new review) 9 months, 1 week ago · View
It was not done incorrectly but the spool of thread that stick out of the focus layer was irritating. Meanwhile the images were replaced in the article by a more meaningful setup and a more accurate procedure with many samples that were compared afterwards. The conclusion is still the same: Whereas the Leica DG Summilux [...]

Helge Hackbarth commented on the blog post (FT4) GH3 with AVCHD 2.0! 9 months, 3 weeks ago · View
1080p60 would be fine but I have some doubts if 28 Mbps will be sufficient to cover that clearly. And I am quite sure that already the GH2 hardware has that potential – so it will be propably just a matter of time until we see that on the GH2 as well. THe GH3 will [...]
