“A protruding EVF is very practical as you can look straight into it w/o having to press your nose or cheek to the camera body”
^That’s why you put the EVF in the top left corner. No need to protrude then….at least not for those of us that are right eye dominant.

I agree, that really bothered me on my G1. The EVF was always getting snagged around something in my backpack. Hopefully someday we’ll have a m4/3′s camera with a flush EVF a’la the NEX-7, but that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.

It looks better I think. Looks quite comfortable to use. Very modern and unique to be sure, but not bad. The textured rubber grip on the front should make it feel better. After all, my biggest gripe with G3 is not the way it looked, or any technical flaw, it is the way it feels. [...]

With the high ISO abilities the OM-D has shown I’m no longer too concerned with fast zooms. I’m more interested in useful range. With 4/3′s size sensors t get decent DOF control you really need f/2 or faster anyway, and as we know f/2 zooms are huge even with a limited range like the Olympus [...]

I’d like to see Olympus add weather seals to the 12mm f/2 and the upcoming 75mm. Also, I’d love the following:
8mm f/2.8 metal weather sealed
18mm f/2 weather sealed pancake
45mm f/1.2 metal weather sealed prime
12-40mm constant f/2.8 weather sealed zoom -

I don’t need an ultrawide zoom, a prime is just fine. I’d be happy with either a 7mm, 8mm, or 9mm.

Odd, I didn’t get the impression at all from that ephotozine review that the 12-50mm was just mediocre. It looks decently sharp wide open across the zoom range, has internal focus, good build quality, weather seals, a really good macro mode, and is obviously 24mm equivilent on the wide end (far better than the typical [...]

Really? From a photographers persepctive (I’m not concerned with video), I’ve seen all I need to see from the E-M5 to know it can handle anything I can throw at it. I’m very very happy I pre-ordered 5 mins after the announcement. These shots by Robin as well as some others I’ve seen are all [...]

Eric commented on the blog post Silver or Black. Which E-M5 did you preorder? 2 months, 3 weeks ago · View
I actually ordered the black one due to the fact that it had that special carbon fiber-like texture. Thought it made it look a bit more modern, yet still plenty classic enough. I figure if I get tired of it there’s always cameraleather-dot-com.

Eric commented on the blog post Panasonic: “very high-end model” mirrorless camera coming this year! (…GH3) 3 months, 1 week ago · View
Phase is clearly faster for continues AF, but for single shot CDAF is already just as fast, and we’ll soon see if Olympus’ claims are true about it being even faster than PDAF. CDAF is also known to be more accurate…at least in good light. My thoughts on it these days are either system is [...]

Eric commented on the blog post Panasonic GX1 fully tested at Dpreview (Silver Award) 3 months, 1 week ago · View
I’ve not yet used the E-M5 (obviously), but according to some things I’ve read the field sequential EVF from Panasonic produces far more color tearing when panning compared to the Olympus EVF. I know the EVF in my G1 was very prone to color shifts. I was actually surprised when I looked through the EVF [...]

It doesn’t matter if it’s fake ISO100 or native ISO100, but we need ISO100 for creative reasons.

I agree. What a load of crap. If they want to make ISO200 the base that’s fine, but they at least need to give us an ISO100 boost like Nikon does. ISO100 is far more useful for creative reasons than any art filter is. Heck, I’d even love to have an ISO50 mode for long [...]

On the unit share by area slide is that the US way down at the bottom? The colors they chose for the US and HK are so close I can’t tell which is which. If so that is shocking. They’re even selling better in Canada than here despite they fact have 9x as many people [...]

I’m also bummed that Olympus chooses a lower magnification for their EVF’s. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but I’m none too happy about it. Since I still regularly a Pentax LX (which has the best OVF I’ve ever seen) anytime I see a view finder smaller than Panny’s 1.4x I feel like I’m [...]

Meaningful improvements? Sorry, but I fail to see any meaningful improvements in the D800 over the D700 aside from the new sensor…and for some users the new sensor may even beep a downgrade depending on how it performs in low light. I don’t know what more you can ask out of Olympus on the OM-D [...]

@James Have you touched the G3? I thought the G3 looked like a great deal on paper also until I tested one out in person. After only 5 mins of using it I lost all interest. That is one of the cheapest feeling cameras this side of the original Canon Rebel. If you don’t mind [...]

The Voigt 1.1, Leica Nocti, and SLR Magic 50mm are all nice lenses for sure, but they are also all designed to cover full frame, which makes each and every one of them needlessly large for m4/3′s cameras. While I have fun adapting my old Pentax lenses, and even some cheaper rangefinder glass, I personally [...]

While I’m excited about the 17mm, I agree, a 45mm or 50mm superfast portrait lens would be really nice to have for bokeh junkies (as there are tons of them). A 45mm f/0.95 would also come close to creating the look we used to get from classic 85mm f/1.4 full frame portrait primes. Sadly, the [...]
