I agree DxOMark isn’t exactly the same as quality but if you know a better objective measure, say what it is.Either way, 2 stops improvement on something not very good to start with is hardly “unbelieveable”. And I certainly found the DxOMark scores reflected my own experience of “quality”, I took my GH2 back for [...]

I’m rather bemused that 2 stops improvement on the EP3 is seen as remarkable because it isn’t as if the EP3 has a great sensor in the first place. According to DxOMark the GH1 has a 13 point advantage over the EP3, and 15 DxOMark points equal one stop. So the now rather dated GH1 [...]

“If there was a way to improve DR to match film, provide clean high ISO and low ISO and keep a small sensor, wouldnt it have already been done?” There is a way to do it. Throw the current technology into a 12MP sensor! Bu the marketroids obviously think it wouldn’t sell, even though it [...]

I’m not hte least bit surprised the low ISO jpg performance is worse than from the G1 / G2. I posted back in December that I had compared GH1 with GH2 and found the same – the newer camera performed better at higher ISO but worse at base ISO, and I take most of my [...]

> So, quality is poorer at the base ISO, but you shot at the base ISO because that’s what gives the best quality? I think we’ve found your problem. I guess English isn’t your first language. If you read my post agin you will see that what I said was that the GH2 is poorer [...]

Sorry, I shoujld have been clearer. I took it back after 1 week use. Of course you don’t have to shoot at base ISO but you get the best quality if you do. With the G1 the quality starts higher than the GH2 at base ISO – I’m just acknowledging that it deteriorates faster on [...]

I ordered a GH2 as soon as I could. I collected it the day it arrived in the shop, one of the first shipment into the UK. I took it back for a full refund. Yes, a great camera in many ways but a full stop less dynamic range than the GH1! Come on Panasonic, [...]

Let’s hope the G3 doesn’t have far too many pixels on the sensor, as the GH2 has. Fingers crossed they have reduced the number back to about 12Mp and gone for dynamic range rather than pointless pixels.

I’ve posted some test shots which directly compare the 45-200 and the 100-300 on my Flickr stream, start here http://www.flickr.com/photos/rupert_brun/5209361623/in/set-72157622611420002/ There are two sets. The first shows a tree at 100, 200 & 300mm on the 100-300 and 45, 100 & 200 on the 45-200. Focus was on the group of leaves on the right [...]
