Japan and interchangeable system cameras: mirrorless market share now at almost 40%!

The release of the Sony NEX cameras boosted the mirrorless market share up to 40% (in Japan). Interesting to see that MicroFourThirds didn’t gain any market share but they also didn’t lose anything because of the NEX cameras. Does it mean there is still room for growth? It would be nice to know the market share in Europe and US (My guess is that it is 15-20%).
Let’s see if Photokina will boost the mirrorless success story…

3 years ago |This data seems a little strange. The fluctuations towards the end of 2009 suggest that this is not a cumulative graph, but rather sales per month.
The real questions are:
1, What is the overall camera market doing and what is the long term trend?
2, What is the overall share of mirrorless ILC and how does that compare to conventional SLRs and P&S?
Plus, 34% is “almost 40%” in the way that GM cars are “almost as good as Toyota”.

2. It’s tough to get globally accurate sales numbers. It is clear that mirrorless is doing very well in Japan, though overall camera sales in Japan are declining as a percentage of global sales (used to be 20% or so, now running more like 15% or less). But the best estimate we have so far is that globally MILC came close to 10% of interchangeable camera sales internationally. Some markets report slightly more, some less.
What’s been clear to me in looking at all the numbers is that INITIAL retail sales of any mirrorless camera are typically good, but most models don’t hold serve for long, even with discounting. Compare this to something like the D90, which continues to be one of the top selling cameras two years after introduction.

3 years ago |It’s hard for me to believe that the mirrorless market is 15-20% in the USA when I’ve never seen one in the wild. The only mirrorless cam I’ve seen is the one I bought on ebay to play with. But I’ve seen a lot of Canon/Nikon DSLRs out there.

3 years ago |@Joel Well a few quarters of having 15-20% of the market share isn’t going to make much of a difference in terms of visibility in the field. Most of the photographers out there already have Canon/Nikon cameras.

3 years ago |I’ve seen a few GF1s an EPs in the wild, primarily among enthusiast types. I did meet a part time pro videographer using a GH1 and he loves it.
I’m in Hawaii and we do have a strong Asian presence & influence which might account for the greater presence.
Of course most of what I see are the Cannikon DSLRs, and once in a great while an Oly.
