It's not as bad or as complicated as you think. Basically, it's talking about a way to prevent the body from over-reacting in response to food poisoning, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, etc. It's kinda like when you have allergies. Your own body is making you miserable because it's over-reacting to otherwise harmless stuff like pollen, dust, etc. By using medications like cholinergic agonists or by stimulating the vagus nerve (one of the main nerves in your body), they found that they can reduce the body's over-reacting to various situations, and reduce the amount of suffering for those conditions. Of course, this is an over-simplification of what is really happening, but you get the picture…
