The Russian website Onfoto (Click here) published a new interview with Toshiyuki Terada (Product Planning, Olympus Imaging Corporation, Japan). Some interesting bits:
1.) A built-in viewfinder is not exclusive for the OM-D line. Future PEN camera can have built-in viewfinder maintaining the current form factor. Personal note: I guess this means that PEN can have a sort of rangefinder styled viewfinder like the Sony NEX-7 or even better, like the Fuji X PRO 1.
2.) The E-M5 cannot be considered like a professional camera because “Reliability for E-5 is much higher than the OM-D.” and “I can not tell you how many shots will slide OM-D, whereas for the E-5, we guarantee that at least 150,000.
3.) When asked if the sensor is from Panasonic he answered: “We do not disclose any information about the sensor manufacturer. Maybe so, and otherwise. We do not say yes or no.
4.) The E-M5 LCD rotates in only one axis to keep a compact size.
5.) About the Four Thirds adapter: “this is one of the essential areas that we explore and study“.
6.) About future Four Thirds products: “We already have started studying a successor of  Olympus E-5.”
7.) Olympus sees no difference between using 12bit or 14bit RAW files.

Summary: PEN with built viewifnder is posisble, E-7 will arrive sooner or later, and a professioanl OM-D is also veyr likely to be developed. That’s a great plan or not? Question:

What camera would you want from Olympus?

Something else: Tsutomu Omori, managing director of Olympus India has been found death (suicide). My condolences to the family and to Olympus. More info at Indiatimes.

They must release new PEN models as soon as possible while the “new” sensor is still hot.

Do I have to choose the Pro option to get four thirds lens support? In reality I would choose a PEN with built in view finder and Four Thirds lens support using a PDAF enabled sensor!

Olympus seems more confident than ever. M4/3 is quickly becoming a full system with lots of possibilities as to body style and functionality.
“(4/3 lens compatibility) is one of the essential areas that we explore and study“. What I read is: “we already have a working solution”.
“We already have started studying a successor of Olympus E-5”. What I read is: “a high end m4/3 with PDAF support is due before long”.

Very good news! A confident and active Olympus is fantastic!

Yeah, a pen with a built in EVF, specifically, the EPL-3 (with the news sensor, of course)with a built in EVF! :)

Good news , all highend new rangefinder will have build in viewfinder , that is what I really expect from m4/3 . And I don’t believe Panasonic will behind Olympus when come to innovation technologies . Since OMD cannot be classified as a Pro camera by Oly means there will be a Pro M4/3 camera on it’s way . This is what I’m waiting for , hopefully it can be delivered within 2012 .
By the way , where is news for the 2 highend X lenses ? Postpone ?

So now they have to say that a better OM-D is on the horizon?

They have to say it at this point when:
    1) OM-D E-M5 is not even out yet.
    2) I’m almost pre-ordering.

And so…. now do I wait or not? Why do they have to make such announcements which I (personally) find detrimental to the current offerings?

Sorry, I’m very new to cameras. Just a newbie’s 2 cents.

all seems very logical and promising to me………

Oh yes…. I am quite happy with these news.

    But:

New Pens with viewfinder – what is the real difference between the E-M5 and an E-P3 with built in Viewfinder? The price? There wouldn’t be many buyers if they will cut most of the new features from a new pen I think.

Professional E-M Camera – nice, but what price can we expect for this, > 2000$ body only? Ok, for those who earns money with this, but I am quite sure they will wait for a E-7.

The 5-axis IS is amazing! This will bring video-shooting without steadycam to a new level > lighter gear! I’d like to see the IS performing in low-light situation for available light photography.

I’m kinda fed up with this sensor-discussion! It really doesn’t matter who the manufacturer is! What counts is the camera as a whole (handling, AF, IS, lens variety and quality, built quality etc.)IMO those who still whine about sensor-manufacturer, -size and pixel-counts forgot what this whole thing is all about!

  • Avatar Image anonymous said 3 months ago:

    1) New Pen with EVF is coming
    2) New e-7 DSLR is coming
    3) No new OM-D is coming soon.

    How true.

  • Avatar Image anonymous said 3 months ago:

difference between E-M5 and next Pen with built in viewfinder will probably be weathersealing and overall visual design

  • Avatar Image anonymous said 3 months ago:

E-7, please. The m4/3 cameras are too small for 4/3 lenses.
