Funny: You can already get that Olympus OM shirt for the CP+ show!

Our reader KTF just sent us that CP+ invitation image he recived via email (Click here to see the full invitation). It says that a new Olympus OM t-short will be distributed at the event. What is really interesting is that “PEN OM IZM XA TRIP” you read on the T-shirt. These are all indications of former Olympus-camera’s.
Olympus PEN -> you all know what they mean with it ![]()
Olympus OM -> That the new system based on OM film cameras.
Olympus IZM -> ‘AZ SuperZoom’ also known as IZM meaning ‘Infinityzoom’ (Click here to see them on eBay)
Olympus XA -> Also 35mm film cameras (Click here to see them on eBay)
Olympus TRIP -> Also filmcameras (Click here to see them on eBay)
Olympus µ -> The compact cameras.
Olympus Camedia -> More compact cameras. (Click here to see them on eBay)
Olympus E-system -> The Four Thirds line.
Thanks Winfried

5 months ago |It mean an IZM will be the next retro style that Olympus will make. Some were ugly some were not. Most had an attached super zoom lens.
So the Olympus strategy is to sell to aging middle age photographers cameras that remind them of their youth. Maybe it is a good strategy as they have a lot of disposable income and will pay more for the privilege of owning a camera that reminds them when they were young. So that is why they are releasing cameras based on 40 year old designs. When the IZM become 40 they will release a retro design.
P
5 months ago |The Leica design is more than 60 years old and still people of every age group want to own one. It’s not about the design, it’s about the Legacy.

5 months ago |Now the S2 that is a camera, more impressed every time I use it. It is not for me though. Maybe its because I did not use Exakta SLRs when I was a youth, stuck using the little rangefinders, as I was the smallest.:)

5 months ago |Retro-cams aren’t just for those in the throes of a mid-life crisis. Here in New York, over the past few months, I’ve noticed more and more hipsters carrying 1970s and 80s vintage SLRs. I wonder if anyone told them they need to buy film for them?
flash
5 months ago |If that is the case I hope at least it is one where you can cock the shutter without film in the camera.
I still walk around with old cameras, just feel good; maybe that is why retro digital cameras do not appeal to me totally.
Mr. Reeee
5 months ago |Heh. Sometimes I’m tempted to pull out one of my 35mm cameras.
Then I think about film processing.
Then I pick up my GH2.
Bob B.
5 months ago |yeah..and you have Duggal right down the street …. Fuji chromes in 2hrs. !!!!!
The question is…can the hipsters put down their phone long enough to be in the moment…and take a picture?????
(bet they listen to vinyl, too).

5 months ago |I have a feeling that the retro-cam fad is really just an answer to and push-back against modern cameras with less physical controls and more touch-screen input.
We’re only human – There’s no denying the beauty of a well-placed lever, button or switch.
I guess another thing that people often forget is that photography has been around since the late 1800′s and the modern layout for what one might call a “classic” rangefinder has been around since, what, 1925 (I’m thinking of Leica).
If design is evolutionary, then it might stand to reason that we we’ve ended up with is an optimial configuration for rangefinders and SLRs.
Of course, yes, I will concede that digital photography changes the rules a little bit (no need to store film, no *need* for optical viewfinder), but the physics are still the same. In fact, for now, the physics actually work against us with digital photography with the need for telecentricity (is that even a word?) to get light onto digital sensors as horizontally incident as possible.
Anyway, I just think retro is about more than being “old”, in this case. It’s about tangibility, instant feedback, and this feeling that everything is where it belongs.

The pixelation and lack of dynamic range on that camera logo is terrible. It must be taken with the new sensor. Canikon would have a far better logo.
Happy to oblige.

5 months ago |I think Olympus is f**king with your mind. These are all 35mm film camera prefixes (and I don’t know if you mean “the” PEN (the 35mm film one) in your post). So, no, your “XZ” (which is XA on the Shirt) is not the XZ-1, but the quite famous XA series.
They just want to blow some smoke and tell us: It could be any one of these (well, not the PEN. They did a digital PEN already).

do you know the name of the missing abandon camera system?

5 months ago |I don’t know but I’ll make some guesses:
Olympus Standard?
Olympus Flex?
Olympus ACE?
Olympus FTL?
achiinto
5 months ago |I thought most of them are not system cameras. System cameras has lens and a lot of accessories to go with. I thought Olympus only has 4 systems so far.
Olympus Pen-F
Olympus OM
Olympus 43
Olympus m43
…Maybe the Autofocus OM is considered something else. And maybe Olympus FTL is another.
flash
5 months ago |You got it
FTL is the system they abandon, but was it really made by Olympus. I have read that the optics were incredible. It was a 42 thread type of SLR camera.
The Olympus Ace was domestic name of a camera it made for Sears in the 50s, had 3 lens, with later lens that was an improvements. I think it was sold with all 3 lens, when it was sold as an Olympus (at least in my camera catalog) so I was not sure, if that was a system.
The “Olympus” Standard was only a prototype. made by the original company. Less the 12 were made. Did not go into production due to the war and an Army directive.
The Olympus Flex were fixed twin lens reflex.
You did not mention the Olympus Chrome it is a really interesting medium format camera.
Of coarse, I am still mad they abandon the OM.

Olympus also made 6×6 cameras.
Would love to see a oversized sensor that covers 3,5×3,5 and 4×3

5 months ago |I wonder if the 7 points in the advertisment clipping isn’t 7 crosshair focus points.
The new OM-D sounds very very promising. If the image quality is ok and it has a variangel viewfinder and it’s weather protected like the E5 it might just be my next camera.
I have used Oly cams for many years but havn’t really found worthy replacements for my old 5060 and 8080 digicams.
I have started to save my money for this one….

5 months ago |With regard to Olympus’s previous history of uber hype about decidedly average products including gems like , fastest AF { they have used that one a few times} as long as you only use one specific lens in one specific condition { and it sure isn’t low light } , or even better is the claim that they had a “new” sensor in a number of cameras using the old 12mp { E-30, E-620,E-5 , plus a boatload of Pen cameras products . I do not think I would be getting too excited but luckily Olympus fanboys are a pretty credulous bunch and will swallow most things hook line and sinker. What you are getting is their take on a GH2 with better build quality, built in same old EVF, and the G3 sensor and no doubt one or two idiotic “special features” such as art filters.
