(FT5) Panasonic LX5 + more compact cameras + surprise camera by end of July.
We are getting closer to the final Panasonic announcement. According to our sources there will be a multiple camera announcement by end of July (not all the cameras will be presented on the same day!).
Expect the new Panasonic LX5 (with the same sensor size as the

P.S.: The surprise is not a MicroFourThirds camera…they will be announced in September!

2 years ago |If you mean big sensor compact, it’s not a surprise anymore.
If it’s a 4/3 DSLR, then I’m surprised.

2 years ago |i hope the lx5 does have a 4/3 sensor… otherwise whatever new compact they drop that does have it should have all the features of the lx5 and some new ones. i wouldnt mind spending a few extra bones on something like that…

2 years ago |So this one….”(FT3) HOT! Panasonic to announce a completely new type of camera (early July)” has now been pushed back…….Boo! I don’ know why they can’t announce this “surprise” camera at the same time as the LX5….especially since there is such confusion and excitement.

2 years ago |Why should the LX5 have a m4/3 sensor? I don’t get it. It’s like expecting the same for the TZ or FZ series. They have their own market target. And that’s fine because it would be really boring if all the cameras were the same.
Like I said when the rumor about the new fixed-lens m4/3 camera started, I’m expecting something in the line of the old LC1 (yes, I know about that post talking about the L1 instead, but I still think it will look more like the LC1, after all if has a 3x fixed lens and a EVF). Too bad they won’t announce it this month because the first time I’m excited about a new camera in a long time… Well, Photokina is not that far either.

2 years ago |So whats the new tech weapon of LX5?
I imagine that if they keep the same sensor size it must be some new technology used, like backside-illumination or gapless engineering. It must be something that improves image quality.
For god’s sake it has been two years!!! Improving the zoom (up to 3x) and adding AVCHD light just isnt enough for the wait,
Personally, although I need a good compact now I m’gonna wait until after photokina. Maybe Canon will answer with an updated S90+ model.

nooooooo
2 years ago |so what happened to “(FT5) Panasonic compact camera with FourThirds sensor to come by late July” ??
Thats too bad. You should keep FT5 designation until you have absolute 100% prooof it will happen. Like a photo of something like that.

2 years ago |” The surprise is not a MicroFourThirds camera…they will be announced in September!”
From that statement, I assume the new rumored fixed zoom lens m4/3 compact will not be anounced until Sept., but what then it the “surprise” camera….or are these conflicting statements.

2 years ago |I’m not sure that the rumours actually said that the fixed lens compact with a large sensor was actually a MicroFourThirds camera – just that it had a large sensor. Perhaps the “surprise” is a full frame fixed lens ‘compact’. This would just about avoid conflicting with the latest info. & would definitely be a surprise. I’m not sure how compact it would be though. I used to own a Canon Z70W which was a 35mm wide angle compact that just about fitted in a pocket but the lens wasn’t that fast….

2 years ago |All right, all right, the confusion is over, and I gather that the LX3 successor with a small sensor and a kind of surprise (like a touch screen, need one?) now (end of the month), and the m4/3 with a permanently attached zoom lens in the September.
End of the story.

2 years ago |By definition, “Micro Four Thirds” means “interchangeable lens.”
So “no m43 until September” is a reference to GH2/GF2 etc. or whatever the camera(s) will be called.
It has nothing to do with a fixed-lens camera with Four Thirds sensor, which is presumably the “surprise”.

2 years ago |sorry, I really don’t understand why you post articels in this forum
wether the LX5 nor any other compact P&S has anything to do with 4/3…
Nathan
2 years ago |I think Panasonic and Olympus will BOTH introduce something NEW as an extension to 4/3 and micro 4/3 this September, involving 4/3 size or APS-C size sensors which take photos that look like full frame when using a new class of lenses that connect to a 2:1 or 0.5x inverse teleconverter. It would appear that both companies have related patents, and while Panasonic’s teleconverter adds AF by using phase detect, Olympus’s patents add SWD autofocus via movable teleconverter elements. It would appear that both aproaches could be a new standard for both companies to build cameras and lenses for.
So, I conclude they’re both going for more competitive offerings by extending the 4/3 set and not by abandoning the system.
This means lenses with larger image circles, and probably modular mounts.
That’s what I conclude. Now, this surprise camera could be something absolutely retarded, if it’s not some revolutionary thing….

2 years ago |@Godot “By definition, “Micro Four Thirds” means “interchangeable lens.””- Not true at all. Micro Four Thirds, and Four Thirds for that matter, refers to the size of the sensor. It has nothing to do with interchangeable lenses.
So to sum this all up, the “FT5″ rumor announced earlier was just hooey? I thought “FT5″ meant sure thing, 100%?
What a load of crap.

I don’t know where you get your “information” from, but posting as if your information was authoritative while actually being 100 percent wrong keeps you from getting the credibility you seek.
Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds are both lens mount AND sensor standards. To call a camera Four Thirds it must have been built to the Four Thirds specifications for lens mounting and image circle. That specification can change, so long as backwards compatibility is maintained.
One thing that CANNOT be Four Thirds or Micro Four Thirds is a fixed-lens camera. FT and uFT are both standards- not open standards, but standards. They have nothing whatsoever to do with the sensor, although there is a requirement that 4:3 be one of the aspect ratios. Panasonic has already built cameras with sensors that are not 4:3 but are micro four thirds- however, 4:3 is the default aspect ratio. The sensor is not 4:3 because it is designed to fill the majority of the image circle with each of several aspect ratios.

2 years ago |@Nathan- Hold your breath and watch, numbnuts. You just may be proven wrong. Of course there is a standard for the Four Thirds lens mount, but that does not mean that there can’t be a fixed lens. And the sensor sizes does have to meet certain specs to be a Four Thirds sensor.
Enough.

2 years ago |Frank, you are flat out, completely, 100% WRONG.
Micro Four Thirds is interchangeable by definition.
